This paper describes a new control strategy for an aircraft electrical systems evaluation platform. The 100 kVA, experimental facility includes multiple generators and power electronic loads interconnected by a high-voltage dc bus, centrally controlled by a real-time computer and data logging system. The Facility is to allow electrical power management techniques to be developed for future autonomous aircraft. The control of the facility presents important challenges as it has to be flexible, facilitating future expansion, robust, safe, and yet allow the development of advanced control strategies.

The focus in this paper is directed toward to the investigation into carbon-based nanoparticle/fiber/tube-reinforced composite materials and their advanced computational dynamic/damping characterization. Structural micro to nanomechanical approach has been outlined to predict damping behavior of the CNT-reinforced polymer matrix material. The model is based on interface motion to address the damping characteristics of CNT-reinforced composite material. It is worth noting that CNT dynamic motion is complex phenomenon while it can be described in case of single particle - matrix, further modeling may require more practical approaches so as to enable validation and using of the computational workbench tools.

With the emergence of grid computing and service-oriented architectures, computing is becoming increasingly less confined to traditional computing platforms. Grid computing promises the accessibility of vast computing and data resources across geographically dispersed areas. This capability is significantly enhanced by establishing support for mobile wireless devices to deliver access to high-performance computing under demanding circumstances. Access to the grid from mobile devices can be very effective in business environments where users can access the vast computing power and data repositories on the grid while working out on the field. This also enables and encourages collaborative working environments. A grid demonstrator system for distributed aircraft health monitoring already developed and implemented in the UK E-Science Grid project, DAME, is introduced. In this demonstrator, CBR technology for decision support is implemented in a practical framework that enables Grid-based, proactive mobile computing.

We provide an overview of the DAME project, and a discussion of the progress made to date on the development of a distributed aeroengine diagnosis environment as a proof of concept demonstration for grid computing. We discuss the development of a demonstration diagnosis workbench system for this complex, data intensive, diagnosis application that must be operated as a distributed 'virtual organisation'. We describe the core diagnosis applications that have been implemented as grid services, and explain how these services are being deployed within the overall diagnosis process

Aero engines are extremely reliable machines and operational failures are rare. However, currently great effort is being put into reducing the number of in-flight engine shutdowns, aborted take-offs and flight delays through the use of advanced engine health monitoring technology. This represents a benefit to society through reduced delays, reduced anxiety and reduced cost of ownership of aircraft. This is reflected in a change of emphasis within companies such as rolls-royce Plc where instead of selling engines to customers there is a fundamental shift to adoption of power-by-the-hour contracts. In these airlines make fixed regular payments based on the hours flown and the engine manufacturer retains responsibility for maintaining the engine. To support this new approach, improvements in in-flight monitoring of engines are being introduced with the collection of much more detailed data on the operation of the engine. At the same time advances have been made in Internet technologies providing a worldwide network of computers that can be used to access and process that data. The explosion of available knowledge within those large datasets also presents its own problems and here it is necessary to work on advanced decision support systems to identify the useful information in the data and provide knowledge-based advice between individual aircraft, airline repair and overhaul bases, world-wide data warehouses and the engine manufacturer. This paper presents a practical framework in which to build such a system that is inherent in the emerging Grid computing paradigm that provides the necessary computing resources. A demonstrator system already developed and implemented within the UK e-Science Grid project DAME is also introduced. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Over the past 10 years there have been rapid advances in wireless and internet technologies. In the case of Fieldbuses many years of standardisation effort have failed to produce a single standard. However, the availability of cheap Ethernet-based networking hardware and PC technology driven by the huge office IT market coupled with the explosion of Internet has made Ethernet an attractive proposition for control and monitoring systems. This has led to parallel developments in Industrial Ethernet and standards specific to the aviation industry. Additionally, the advent of low cost mobile telephone technology and wireless interconnect for PC and electrical goods is driving interest in the adoption of this technology in other areas. Already products are appearing on the market which exploit this technology and many applications exist. This overview presents an introduction and overview of the current state of the technology as a result of studies performed by the author for rolls-royce into potential exploitation of these technologies in rolls-royce aircraft, marine and industrial systems. In particular, the application of Ethernet and wireless technologies for on-board systems, remote operational monitoring, testing and control will be considered.

This paper focuses on multi-objective optimisation of staged combustion control for aviation gas turbine engines. Pareto optimisation based multi-objective genetic algorithms are used to design the fuel distribution control laws of a staged combustor. The results of control system parameter optimisation over International Civil Aviation Organisation Landing and Take-off cycle and the typical engine operation condition are presented. An analysis of the control-related issues for optimal fuel distribution is presented. Copyright © 2002 IFAC.
