This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Matchmaking and cooperation are interactions widely available within internet-based platforms. However, to start using such functionality, one must first become a member of the platform. In an effort to push matchmaking and cooperation into the protocol stack of the Web, we demonstrate how an existing taxi service is integrated with a decentralized Web based infrastructure, the Web of Needs (WoN), using a chatbot that can be programmed declaratively to enter into certain types of agreements with users. The bot mediates between an existing Web service and users of the RDF-based WoN network. © 2018 CEUR-WS. All Rights Reserved.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Using meta-heuristics and machine learning for software optimization of parallel computing systems: A systematic literature review

While modern parallel computing systems ofter high performance, utilizing these powerful computing resources to the highest possible extent demands advanced knowledge of various hardware architectures and parallel programming models, Furthermore, optimized software exe-cution on parallel computing systems demands consideration of many parameters at compile-time and run-time. I^termining the optimal set of parameters in a given execution context is a complex task, and therefore to addiess this issue researchers have proposed different approaches that use heuristic search or machine learning. In this paper, we undertake a systematic literature review to aggregate, analyze and classify the existing software optimization methods for parallel computing systems Me review approaches that use machine learning or meta-heuristics for software opti-mization at compile-time and run-time. Additionally, we discuss challenges and future research directions. The results of this study may help to better understand the state-of-the-art techniques that use machine learning and meta-heuristics to deal with the complexity of software optimiza-tion for parallel computing systems. Furthermore, it may aid in understanding the limitations of existing approaches and identification of areas for improvement. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

People frequently use internet-based messaging systems to coordinate. In order to achieve that, it is sufficient for them to exchange natural language messages. The message history they generate can be seen as a shared database that can be tapped into by personal assistive systems;moreover, messaging is increasingly used for human-computer communication. However, if natural language understanding is required for such systems to function properly, the cost of developing them is high and only few market players will be able to compete. If, on the other hand, it is possible to mix machine-interpretable data with natural language conversations, assistive or conversational programs may be developed more easily. As a first important challenge, we tackle the problem of negotiating agreements and unambiguously represent what has been agreed upon in a machine-readable form. In this paper, we propose an extension of the Web of Needs, a decentralized, Linked Data based matching and messaging system, to allow conversation partners to produce a mutually agreed-upon RDF dataset.

The Web of Needs (WoN) is an approach for expressing and publishing human needs on the Internet as linked data to allow automatic matching of the expressed needs and communication between users who expressed them. When linked data applications communicate, they commonly use messaging technologies in which the message exchange itself is not represented as linked data, since it takes place on a different architectural level. When a message cannot be verified and traced on the linked data level, trust in data is moved from message originators to service providers. However, there are use cases in which the actual message exchange and its verifiability are of importance. In such situations, the separation between application data and communication data is not desirable. To address this, we propose messaging based on linked data, where communicating entities and their messages are represented as interconnected Web resources, and we show how conversations can be made verifiable using digital signatures. © 2016 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Many platforms or marketplaces on the web offer services that describe supply in certain domains. Users have to search actively and often multiple times in different closed platforms to find what they want. This approach produces a lot of overhead for users which can only to some extend be reduced by recommendations and filtering for relevant information. The Web of Needs is an open infrastructure that aims to address this situation. Instead of users searching actively, they express and publish their needs (supply and demand) as linked data documents and get notified when suitable matches have been found. For this approach to work, need documents must be matched with each other by so-called matching services running in the background. The system allows multiple matching services to run in parallel that may be tuned for certain domains of needs. In this paper we describe a prototypical matching service architecture and explain how it can be extended to integrate custom matching algorithms into the Web of Needs. © 2016 Copyright held by the author/owner(s).s).

CAEX is one of the most promising standards when it comes to data exchange between engineering tools in the production system automation domain. This is also reflected by the current emergence of AutomationML, which uses CAEX as its core representation data format. Having such standards at hand, the question arises how to deal with the evolution of such standards as is currently happening with the transition from CAEX 2.15 to CAEX 3.0. In this paper, we take a language engineering point of view to the evolution of engineering data formats. In particular, we present how CAEX can be formulated in a model-based framework, which allows to reason about evolution of the data format as well as its impact on the data stored in such evolving formats. By this, not only the migration process of existing data to the new format version is possible, but also a more theoretical investigation on information preservation is possible. We demonstrate the approach by the concrete case of the upcoming CAEX evolution.

research databases are an important building block in eScience and computational science investigations. For enabling reproducible research, an approach is needed which supports the identification and citation of the exact data (sub)sets utilized in experiments. While this itself is a challenge, in many cases the data stored in databases is sensitive and needs to be protected. Due to the increasing complexity of eScience investigations, data is often integrated from different sources, potentially stemming from competing data owners. In order to achieve the research goals, the data needs to be combined and analysed as a whole. As data owners of such sources may have potential conflicts of interest in certain aspects, a mechanism is needed which prevents the retrieval and or recombination of privacy related data while still full access to own data must be granted at all times.
