Wireless networks are becoming increasingly popular in professional environments as well as in the home. The success of IEEE 802.11 has cut down equipment costs and people are now building their own residential wireless networks, connecting PCs, MP3 players, broadband gateways and Hi-Fi ***, such dramatic growth is creating problems in crowded areas, as the Wi-Fi bandwidth is limited and interference effects start to limit the technology *** paper describes a management system for handling the quality of the overall home wireless network, so that interference or bulk noise effects can be alleviated allowing users to enjoy digital content with the reliability they expect. By means of Universal Plug 'n Play, events that may deteriorate the quality of existing services can be propagated to all interested devices so that a smart allocation of network resources can be applied. A simple Admission Control scheme is also used to regulate the admission of real-time streams.

With reference to H.264/AVC standard the paper proposes a new control algorithm which dynamically configures the search parameters of the motion estimation (ME) task: used reference frames, valid block modes and search size. The aim is remarkably reducing the ME complexity with unaltered coding efficiency for a wide range of bit-rates from Klips to tens of Mbps and video formats (QCIF to CCIR). The technique has been successfully applied to Full Search (FS) and fast ME engines. ©2006 IEEE.

In this paper we evaluate the probability that a transient fault (TF), multiple or single, affecting a checker of a self-checking circuit, gives rise to an unnecessary error indication (no-harm alarm). A new property (no-harm alarm robustness) has been defined that, in case of a fault affecting a self-checking circuit (SCC), guarantees that we can determine whether the fault is affecting the functional block, or the checker itself, and whether such a fault is a transient or a permanent fault. Finally, we propose a possible solution implementing the defined property. Its behavior has been verified by means of HSpice simulations, and we evaluate its cost in terms of area overhead and introduced delay. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents the block processing engine (BPE), an application specific instruction-set processor (ASIP) explicitly designed for the implementation of multi-standard wireless terminals. Thanks to a high level of parallelism and a consistent use of pipeline, the BPE architecture fully satisfies stringent real-time constraints imposed by emerging technologies. Its efficiency has been proven through the implementation, the physical synthesis for the CMOS 90nm STM technology and the FPGA prototyping on the ARM Versatile platform of a dual-standard frequency domain equalizer (FDE) supporting the 3GPP HSDPA and the IEEE 802.11a standards

An efficient method is proposed to dynamically adapt the group of pictures (GOP) size in H.264/AVC encoding, by on-the-fly identification of scene changes in the input video signal. Intra coding picture decision is taken at the end of the pre-analysis phase of a fast motion estimation method based on spatial-temporal motion correlation. With negligible additional computation and memory requirements, the proposed method allows improving the compression of the whole coding process by up to 15%, without affecting the overall image quality

This paper summarizes the characteristics of distributed object models used in large-scale distributed software systems. We examine the common subset of requirements for distributed software systems and systems-on-a-chip (SoC), namely: openness, heterogeneity and multiple forms of transparency. We describe the application of these concepts to the emerging class of complex, parallel SoC's, including multiple heterogeneous embedded processors interacting with hardware co-processors and I/O devices. The HyperElliptic Curve Cryptosystem (HECC) was quite extensively studied during the recent years. In the open literature one can find results on how to improve the group operations of HECC as well as teh implementations for various types of processors. There have also been some efforts to implement HECC on hardware devices, like for instance FPGAs. Only one of these works, however, deals with the inversion-free formulae to compute the group operations of HECC. We present inversion-free group operations for the HEC y2 + xy = x5 + f1x + f0 and we target characteristic-two fields. The reascn is that of allowing a fair comparison with hardware architectures using the affine case presented in [BBWP04]. In the main part of the paper we use these results to investigate various hardware architectures for a HECC VLSI coprocessor. If area constraints are not considered, scalar multiplication can be performed in 19,769 clock cycles using three field multipliers (of type D = 32), one field adder and one field squarer, where D indicates the digit-size of the multiplier. However, the optimal solution in terms of latency and area uses two multipliers (of type D = 4), one addition and one squaring. The main finding of the present contribution is that coprocessors based on the inversion-free formulae should be preferred compared to those using group operations containing inversion. This holds despite the fact that one field inversion in the affine HECC group operation is traded by up to 24 field multiplications in the inversion-free case. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Digital images captured in dim light conditions can be very noisy: mixtures of different noise types may damage the image signal, e.g. impulsive and Gaussian noises. A spatio-temporal filter is proposed, which is capable to eliminate multiple adjacent defective pixels and reduce Gaussian noise in the raw data acquired by the image sensor. The proposed solution is adaptive in that it automatically adjusts its sensitivity, depending on the estimated noise.

Image denoising is one of the most recurrent problems to face in the design of image generation pipelines. This paper proposes a novel method for the estimation of the noise level in images contaminated by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The estimated noise level is updated on a frame basis allowing convergence to the optimal value. At the same time, dynamic adjustment to changing noise levels is permitted. The proposed technique has been successfully implemented in a real system, demonstrating the validity of the proposed solution.
