In this paper we tackle the problem of correctly estimating the gradient of distorted images. The proper estimation of the gradient in the presence of distortion is of great interest due to the large number of applications relying on wide angle cameras (e.g., in surveillance, automotive, robotics). To this aim we propose the Generalized Sobel Filters (GSF), a family of adaptive Sobel filters able to correctly estimate the gradient of distorted images. To assess the performances of the proposed method, we acquired a benchmark dataset of high resolution images belonging to different categories which are relevant to application domains where the gradient estimation is usually employed. We build an objective evaluation pipeline and perform experiments which show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art.

In this work, we investigate the efficacy of Micro Electro-Mechanical system (MEMS) microphones, a newly developed technology of very compact sensors, for multichannel speech enhancement. Experiments are conducted on real speech data collected using a MEMS microphone array. First, the effectiveness of the array geometry for noise suppression is explored, using a new corpus containing speech recorded in diffuse and localized noise fields with a MEMS microphone array configured in linear and hexagonal array geometries. Our results indicate superior performance of the hexagonal geometry. Then, MEMS microphones are compared to Electret Condenser Microphones (ECMs), using the ATHENA database, which contains speech recorded in realistic smart home noise conditions with hexagonal-type arrays of both microphone types. MEMS microphones exhibit performance similar to ECMs. Good performance, versatility in placement, small size, and low cost, make MEMS microphones attractive for multichannel speech processing. © 2015 IEEE.

Wearable systems for remote monitoring of physiological parameter are ready to evolve towards wearable imaging systems. The Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) allows the non-invasive investigation of the internal body structure. The characteristics of this low-resolution and low-cost technique match perfectly with the concept of a wearable imaging device. On the other hand low power consumption, which is a mandatory requirement for wearable systems, is not usually discussed for standard EIT applications. In this work a previously developed low power architecture for a wearable bioimpedance sensor is applied to EIT acquisition and reconstruction, to evaluate the impact on the image of the limited signal to noise ratio (SNR), caused by low power design. Some anatomical models of the chest, with increasing geometric complexity, were developed, in order to evaluate and calibrate, through simulations, the parameters of the reconstruction algorithms provided by Electrical Impedance Diffuse Optical Reconstruction Software (EIDORS) project. The simulation results were compared with experimental measurements taken with our bioimpedance device on a phantom reproducing chest tissues properties. The comparison was both qualitative and quantitative through the application of suitable figures of merit;in this way the impact of the noise of the low power front-end on the image quality was assessed. The comparison between simulation and measurement results demonstrated that, despite the limited SNR, the device is accurate enough to be used for the development of an EIT based imaging wearable system.

In this work we investigated the suitability of Key Frame Extraction solutions in embedded architectures for mobile platforms. In particular, in our scenario the list of key frames is requested right after a shooting session ends. The most interesting outcome has been the evaluation of performances in User Generated Content scenarios through an extensive survey based on Opinion Scores, interviews and other minor metrics testing five different solutions. Results suggest that pursuing sophisticated algorithms doesn't necessarily enrich the end user experience. We hope that this work will contribute to stimulate the debate on the KFE also in realistic scenarios and to pay attention to the user feedbacks to drive the investigation. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Feature extractors play an important role in different Computer Vision application domains such as registration, recognition and visual search. Different detectors have been proposed and evaluated so far assuming images taken with classic cameras. However, many operating cameras (e.g., in surveillance and automotive) are built considering a fisheye model and a preprocessing step is performed to remove the distortion of the images before running a detector. The following question arises: are the current detectors suitable to work directly in the fisheye domain? To answer this question, in this paper a benchmark dataset and objective evaluation measures are considered to evaluate the performances of the state-of-the-art detectors in the fisheye domain. Test images are properly generated starting from benchmark rectilinear images and considering different fisheye focal lengths. The experiments evaluate the performances of the detectors against both increasing fisheye distortion and the combination of the fisheye distortion with photometric and geometric variability of the image content. The experiments demonstrate that affine covariant detectors can be employed directly in the fisheye domain. Furthermore, although the transformation between the rectilinear and the fisheye coordinates is not affine, we show that the mapping can be locally approximated by linear functions with a small error. © 2014 IEEE.

Security in true random number generation in cryptography is based on entropy per bit at the generator output. The entropy is evaluated using stochastic models. Several recent works propose stochastic models based on assumptions related to selected physical analog phenomena such as noise or jittery signal and on the knowledge of the principle of randomness extraction from the obtained analog signal. However, these assumptions simplify often considerably the underlying analog processes, which include several noise sources. In this paper, we present a new comprehensive multilevel approach, which enables to build the stochastic model based on detailed analysis of noise sources starting at transistor level and on conversion of the noise to the clock jitter exploited at the generator level. Using this approach, we can estimate proportion of the jitter coming only from the thermal noise, which is included in the total clock jitter.

Among the many possible approaches for the parallelization of self-organizing networks, and in particular of growing self-organizing networks, perhaps themost common one is producing an optimized, parallel implementation of the standard sequential algorithms reported in the literature. In this chapter we explore an alternative approach, based on a newalgorithm variant specifically designed to match the features of the large-scale, fine-grained parallelism of GPUs, in which multiple input signals are processed at once. Comparative tests have been performed, using both parallel and sequential implementations of the new algorithm variant, in particular for a growing self-organizing network that reconstructs surfaces from point clouds. The experimental results show that this approach allows harnessing in amore effective way the intrinsic parallelism that the self-organizing networks algorithms seem intuitively to suggest, obtaining better performances even with networks of smaller size. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

This paper focuses on the optimization process of the HEVC/H.265 video decoder on suitable architectures for mobile devices. The solutions developed to support the new HEVC/H.265 features are shown together with the achieved performance. The HEVC/H.265 decoder complexity has been evaluated and the most demanding modules have been optimized with Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions. Even though the here described approach has a general meaning, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions has been demonstrated on ARM architecture. In particular, we have selected the Cortex A9 processor with NEON SIMD extension. We will demonstrate that the resulting HEVC/H.265 application can decode in real-time 720p (1280×720) streams at 30 frames per second on a single core ARMv7 at 1.2 GHz.

In this paper an optimized implementation of the HEVC video decoder is shown. The solutions developed to support the new features of HEVC are shown together with the achieved performance. The HEVC decoder complexity has been evaluated and the most demanding modules have been optimized exploiting SIMD instructions. Even though the here described concepts have a general value, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions has been verified on the ARM architecture. The selected architecture is ARM Cortex A9 with NEON SIMD extension. We will demonstrate that the resulting real-time HEVC software decoder can decode 720p (1280x720) streams at 30 frames per second on a single core ARMv7 at 1.2 GHz.
