Industry requires new advanced tools and methodologies for the design of complex system-on-chip platforms. In stmicroelectronics we developed an innovative retargetable technology for the analysis and optimization of embedded software. In this paper we provide an overview of our retargetable tool chain which consists of: a specification reader a disassembler a code analyzer and a functional simulator. Their capabilities, specific features and limitations are described in detail.

ICTH is based upon a low-rate convolutional code, with optimized distance properties, combined with multilevel pulse-position modulation (PPM). In this context, bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is used to decorrelate the bit errors and, more importantly, to obtain a flat spectrum. This paper describes a design space exploration experiment for a real application from the embedded networking domain - the physical layer of a wireless protocol. The application models both control oriented as well as data processing functions, and hence requires composing tasks from different models of computation. We show how the cost and performance of communication and computation can be quickly evaluated, with a reasonable modeling cost. While the example uses a specific tool, the methodology and results can be used in a more general context.

Passive Optical Network (PON)-based Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) are promising solutions that can break through the economic barrier of traditional point-to-point solutions. Once fibers are deployed with PON-based FTTH solutions, it becomes critical how to migrate to Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-PON because Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) used in current PON solutions cannot exploit the huge bandwidth of the optical fibers and therefore will not be able to meet ever-increasing demands for higher bandwidth by future network applications. In this paper we review and compare the current PON-based FTTH solutions, ATM-PON (APON) and Ethernet PON (EPON), and provide a possible evolution scenario to future WDM-PON.

The objective of this research is to develop tools and methods for system-level optimization of embedded software that is executed on system-on-chip platforms. In particular, this paper proposes a new instruction-set simulator's tool flow which has been extended with some retargetability features and multiple program representations. We propose an innovative way to improve the simulation speed, that is a key factor for embedded software optimization, by using a synthesis approach. In depth description is reported of the source-level optimization of the simulation library which is an important part of such new mechanism. Experimental results show a speedup of about 24 for the throughput of the simulation library, reaching the valuable performance of 50 Mops.
