Frequency Assignment is an important approach to mitigate multi-cell interference in cellular systems. In this paper, we consider frequency hopping as one possible frequency assignment approach. In particular we focus our attention on cognitive radio cellular systems as one of the very promising future access technologies, taking IEEE 802.22 as an example. While the optimal frequency assignment for such a system is conceptually straightforward as well as computationally complex, we demonstrate that usage of distributed methods leads to a significant loss of assignment efficiency. In addition, we suggest means of mitigating this adverse effect. ©2010 IEEE.

Since the large diffusion of digital camera and mobile devices with embedded camera and flashgun, the red-eyes artifacts have de-facto become a critical problem. The technique herein described makes use of three main steps to identify and remove red-eyes. First, red eyes candidates are extracted from the input image by using an image filtering pipeline. A set of classifiers is then learned on gray code features extracted in the clustered patches space, and hence employed to distinguish between eyes and non-eyes patches. Once red-eyes are detected, artifacts are removed through desaturation and brightness reduction. The proposed method has been tested on large dataset of images achieving effective results in terms of hit rates maximization, false positives reduction and quality measure.

Since the first publication of a successful practical two-fault attack on protected CRT-RSA surprisingly little attention was given by the research community to an ensuing new challenge. The reason for it seems to be two-fold. One is that generic higher order fault attacks are very difficult to model and thus finding robust countermeasures is also difficult. Another reason may be that the published experiment was carried out on an outdated 8 bit microcontroller and thus was not perceived as a serious threat to create a sense of urgency in addressing this new menace. In this paper we describe two-fault attacks on protected CRT-RSA implementations running on an advanced 32 bit ARM Cortex M3 core. To our knowledge, this is the first practical result of two fault laser attacks on a protected cryptographic application. Considering that laser attacks are much more accurate in targeting a particular variable, the significance of our result cannot be overlooked.

Power and resource management are key goals for the success of modern battery-supplied multimedia devices, which are complex systems with multiple functionalities all embedded in a small set of components. This kind of devices are usually based on SoCs with a wide range of subsystems, that compete in the usage of shared resources and offer several power saving capabilities, but need an adequate software support to exploit such capabilities. Therefore, offering the best QoS level and user experience, while saving as much power as possible to improve mobility becomes a challenging goal that involves all the layers of a system, from the application level to the device driver's level. Moreover, reduced time to market in the development of new products require the definition of an agile methodology that permit portability of existing solutions and code across different devices and new products' versions. The goal of CPM is to permit coordination and communication between different entities of the system to grant the desired QoS using dynamic optimization policies with negligible impact on the system. We focus on a real use case which shows the benefits of CPM both on resources management and on the solution of a dependency issue on the clock frequency of hardware devices (CPU and DSPs) in a SoC.

In this paper we provide an overview of CPM, a cross-layer framework for Constrained Power Management, and we present its application on a real use case. This framework involves different layers of a typical embedded system, ranging from device drivers to applications. The main goals of CPM are (i) to aggregate applications' QoS requirements and (ii) to exploit them to support an efficient coordination between different drivers' local optimization policies. This role is supported by a system-wide and multi-objective optimization policy which could be also changed at run-time. In this paper we mostly focus on a real use case to show the very low overhead of CPM both on the management of QoS requirements and on the tracking of hardware crossdependencies, which cannot be directly considered by local optimization policies.

Red-eye artifact is a well-known problem in digital photography. Since the large diffusion of mobile devices with embedded camera and flashgun, automatic detection and correction of red-eyes have become an important task. In this paper we describe a technique that makes use of three steps to identify and correct red-eyes. First, red-eye candidates are extracted from the input image by using simple color segmentation coupled with geometrical constraints. A set of linear discriminant classifiers is then learned on the clustered patches space, and hence employed to distinguish between eyes and non-eyes patches. The proposed cluster-based Linear Discriminant Analysis is used to deal with the multi-modally nature of the input space. The third step of the pipeline is devoted to artifacts correction through de-saturation and brightness reduction. Experimental results on a large dataset of images demonstrate the effectiveness of the pro- posed pipeline that outperforms other existing solutions in terms of hit rates maximization, false positives reduction and ad-hoc quality measure.

This paper describes an innovative, pipelined, cache-based architecture for a motion estimation coprocessor based on a predictive/recursive algorithm whose computational complexity is low and independent from the search window. The algorithm and the associated architecture yields itself very well to low-power, low-cost video capture devices with low processing capabilities, such as mobile phones, PDAs, or handhelds. The synergy between architecture and algorithmic features allows a high quality output, low memory to cache bandwidth requirements, and a search window independent implementation for H.264/AVC real time video encoding of up to high definition video (HDTV).

The bus between the system on Chip (SoC) and the external memory is one of the weakest points of computer systems: an adversary can easily probe this bus in order to read private data (data confidentiality concern) or to inject data (data integrity concern). The conventional way to protect data against such attacks and to ensure data confidentiality and integrity is to implement two dedicated engines: one performing data encryption and another data authentication. This approach, while secure, prevents parallelizability of the underlying computations. In this paper, we introduce the concept of Block-Level Added Redundancy Explicit Authentication (BL-AREA) and we describe a Parallelized Encryption and Integrity Checking Engine (PE-ICE) based on this concept. BL-AREA and PE-ICE have been designed to provide an effective solution to ensure both security services while allowing for full parallelization on processor read and write operations and optimizing the hardware resources. Compared to standard encryption which ensures only confidentiality, we show that PE-ICE additionally guarantees code and data integrity for less than 4% of run-time performance overhead. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Despite the great advances that have been made in the field of digital photography and CMOS/CCD sensors, several sources of distortion continue to be responsible for image quality degradation. Among them, a great role is played by sensor noise and motion blur. Of course, longer exposure times usually lead to better image quality, but the change in the photocurrent over time, due to motion, can lead to motion blur effects. The proposed low-cost technique deals with the aforementioned problem using a multi-capture denoising algorithm, obtaining a good quality with sensible reduction of the motion blur effects. © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.
