Self-organizing systems are characterized by an inherently local behavior, as their configuration is almost exclusively determined by the union of the states of each of the units composing the system. Moreover, all state changes are mutually independent and governed by the same laws. In this work we study the parallel implementation of a specific subset of this broader family, namely that of growing self-organizing networks, in relation to parallel computing hardware devices based on Graphic Processing Units (GPUs), which are increasingly gaining popularity due to their favourable cost/performance ratio. In order to do so, we first define a new version of the standard, sequential algorithm, where the intrinsic parallelism of the execution is made more explicit and then we perform comparative experiments with the standard algorithm, together with an optimized variant of the latter, where an hash index is used for speed. Our experiments demonstrates that the parallel version outperforms both variants of the sequential algorithm but also reveals a few interesting differences in the overall behavior of the system, that might be relevant for further investigations. The current trend in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is to use the Internet Protocol (IP) and open standards to achieve native connectivity between smart objects and the Internet, contributing to consolidate the Internet of Things (IoT). Emerging standards such as 6LoWPAN/IPv6 and CoRE/CoAP will play a very important role in a RESTful Web of Things, where each node has its own IPv6 address and is able to provide information and control about itself. Data exchanging in Machine To Machine (M2M) applications and communication with Web services require the use of structured data. XML is a possible solution, but its verbosity is not suitable for a WSN (e.g. based on IEEE 802.15.4) characterized by limited packet size. This paper investigates the benefits of Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) in a real scenario, considering sensor nodes running on the Contiki RTOS. For this purpose, the authors have implemented an extremely lightweight version of EXI for Contiki running on application boards with just 8 Kbyte RAM memory.

Medical assessment of bone health often uses quantitative computed tomography (QCT) scans and requires a reliable segmentation of bone geometry from surrounding tissue for a quick determination of bone mineral mass. Because of its shape and position in the body, the femur is one of the most challenging bones to investigate. In the current study we developed a new automated way to accurately evaluate both the shape and the mineral mass of cadaveric femora. The results were achieved through a series of steps including the segmentation of bone tissue from sets of QCT images, the estimation of the bone's outer surface, the calculation of the volume enclosed, and finally the evaluation of bone mineral mass in a user-defined region. We compared our algorithms results to results obtain by expert manual segmentation and results obtained using other published methods. This new method has the potential to be used in the clinic with patient QCT scans as a fast and reliable tool for diagnostics.

This paper investigates a given branch of the music information retrieval field, specifically that of audio thumbnail, through which a piece of music can be automatically summarized. We first provide a survey on the different techniques available today for the generation of music summaries, and then we propose a practical method that, based on best practices, is able to summarize songs with a great efficacy.

Visual search for mobile devices relies on transmitting wirelessly image descriptors to a remote server. Hence, descriptors needs to be compressed to reduce bandwidth occupancy and network latency. In this paper, we investigate on the compression ratio versus accuracy of two low complexity coding schemes, based on Arithmetic and Type coding, applied to SIFT local descriptors.

H.264 or AVC (advanced Video Coding) is a latest digital video codec standard which was developed as an answer to the growing demand for better compression in a wide range of applications and for improved network friendliness. H. 264 is able to deliver a compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards (e.g. MPEG2 or H. 263). The downside is that the H. 264 decoder complexity is nearly four times higher than the previous standards. Hence a powerful hardware platform is required to provide real-time performance of H. 264 in today's high-end applications like HDTV. We present an innovative Hardware architecture to perform real-time H. 264 CABAC decoding using Finite State Machines (FSMs) for decoding of syntax elements. This architecture delivers a throughput of 1 bin per cycle @ 180MHz as reported by Synopsys Design Compiler.

In this paper we present a preliminary study towards the design of a low cost colorimetric imaging device. We show that an effective color measurement is possible even using consumer camera sensors. We present here the colorimetric accuracy test results obtained with simulated data using the theoretical model of image formation and a camera simulation system. The final paper will also include the colorimetric accuracy test results obtained with real camera sensors. For all the experiments the multispectral response has been obtained by the overlap of colored filters on the existing color filter array pattern. Many consumer devices can benefit from the colorimetric accuracy of such a system, e.g. printers with automatic color management characterization or other consumer devices where an accurate color response is required. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we present a unique approach towards parallelizing the Software MPEG-2 Video Encoder. The approach involves the division of encoding process spatially, between four similar processors with distributed memory system, in such a way that each frame of the input video sequence is divided into four separate sections, each individually processed by a processor. The results thus produced were compared with those of the Sequential Encoder for a number of different input bitstreams and a speedup in the range of 3 to 3.5 with four processors was successfully obtained.

Low power wireless networks gain continuously broader interest for potential applications and advance of technology. However, making a network really low power is still an open issue. An efficient way to achieve this result is to make a transceiver work in Low Duty Cycle mode. Many proposals have been presented on this topic, but they are not always that efficient. This paper presents the Hierarchical Duty Cycle Management (HDCM) protocol, a novel solution in this area that actually provides low power consumption for both end devices and routers. The reported simulation results confirm the expected advantages, as well as the side effect of a delivery latency that grows with the network dimension and diameter. For this reason, HDCM fits well Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) target applications, because of their energy constraints and delay tolerance.
