A heuristic rule-based approach was proposed in a recent paper for the detection of the urban road environment-type (RET), such as downtown, residential area, and business/industrial area, that characterizes the road environment around an ego-car. The RET detection approach takes into account the relevant traffic signs (TSs) that are visible from the ego-car. It is assumed that the TS data, namely the type and the location of each detected TS along the route, is made available for the purpose by an on-board TS recognition system. The continually updated TS data is aggregated and evaluated in a multi-scale manner by the RET detection system. In the present paper, the heuristic rules - employed within the mentioned system - that handle the competition situations arising between the RET-candidates selected for and representing the various distance-scales are visualized in a vividly descriptive manner. The visualization of the rules makes the decision process easier to understand, furthermore, it facilitates the re-use, the adaptation and the extension of the rule-set for other road-related applications that rely on TS and possibly on other road-related data. A summary of the RET detection results from the mentioned paper is included herein to make the paper self-contained.

Given the escalating environmental challenges, it is clear that the approach to the usage of public transport (PT) must be reconsidered. Loyal PT users help attract other travelers through positive recommendations, this drives interest in exploring the relationships between service quality, satisfaction, and loyalty. Although these relationships in the PT context have been studied, there have been limited efforts to explore the variability of their effects. Therefore, this research explores how service quality, satisfaction, involvement, and prior knowledge influence the behavioral intentions to use PT across various traveler groups. The hypotheses are tested by using multi-group analysis in the structural equation modeling framework, and three user profiles are revealed by applying the latent class cluster analysis. The results indicate that involvement strongly influences the behavioral intentions, while satisfaction impacts the intentions solely when involvement acts as a moderator. Class-specific results indicate that younger females living outside the city center put greater emphasis on service quality improvements for their satisfaction and involvement in PT services compared to males and older individuals residing in the city center. Low-income students living in the city center are more likely to use PT if they feel confident how to use the service. The results are relevant for PT operators and related stakeholders in maintaining travelers’ loyalty.

Kinetic realization of delayed polynomial dynamical models

In this paper, we study the kinetic realization problem of nonnegative delayed polynomial systems. Given a set of delayed polynomial differential equations, the task is to assign a chemical reaction network structure that realizes its dynamics. We show that similarly to the non-delayed case, this problem is generally non-uniquely solvable. We extend existing results for the realization of non-delayed models by proposing an algorithm to build delayed realizations and proving that the so-called dense realization defines a superstructure in the delayed case, too. The notions and results are shown on a simple illustrative example.

The paper presents modeling, control and analysis of an urban public transport network. First, a centralized system description is given, built up from the dynamics of individual buses and bus stops. Aiming to minimize three conflicting goals (equidistant headways, timetable adherence, and minimizing passenger waiting times), a reference tracking model predictive controller is formulated based on the piecewise-affine system model. The closed-loop system is analyzed with three methods. Numerical simulations on a simple experimental network showed that the temporal evolution of headways and passenger numbers could maintain their periodicity with the help of velocity control. With the help of randomized simulation scenarios, sensitivity of the system is analyzed. Finally, infeasible regions for the bus network control was sought using by formulating an explicit model predictive controller.

The main focus of the research presented in this paper is to propose new methods for filtering and cleaning large-scale production log data by applying statistical learning models. Successful application of the methods in consideration of a production optimization and a simulation-based prediction framework for decision support is presented through an industrial case study. Key parameters analysed in the computational experiments are fluctuating reject rates that make capacity estimations on a shift basis difficult to cope with. The most relevant features of simulation-based workload estimation are extracted from the products' final test log, which process has the greatest impact on the variance of workload parameters. © 2018 IEEE

The objective of the paper is to revisit a key mathematical technology within the theory of stochastic approximation in a Markovian framework, elaborated in detail in Benveniste et al. (1990): the existence, uniqueness and Lipschitz-continuity of the solutions of a parameter-dependent Poisson equation. The starting point of our investigation is a relatively new, elegant stability theory for Markov processes developed by Hairer and Mattingly (2011). The paper provides a transparent analysis of parameter-dependent Poisson equations with convenient conditions. The application of our results for the ODE analysis of stochastic approximation in a Markovian framework is the subject of a forthcoming paper.

In the era of the industrial digitalization, the availability of shop-floor data is not a question anymore, but rather the exploitation of the underlying information. With advanced sensor technologies, detailed data can be obtained about products, resources and processes in near real time, however, still there are gaps between the collection of the data, and the utilization of it. The greatest current challenge is the use of available data in decisionmaking processes that brings the real business value for companies, to keep their competitiveness and internal efficiency. In the paper, a reference model of an industrial data analytics platform is presented that supports the integration of various analytics solutions with enterprise level decision support tools, such as planning and scheduling systems. The reference model is composed of various layers, supporting the collection, storage and analysis of data coming from various sources. In addition to its business intelligence related dashboarding and visualization functions, it provides the opportunity of linking the analytics results with other software applications. In order to highlight the capabilities of the proposed model, possible application domains and use-cases are presented, reflecting real industrial needs.

Vibration based characterization of tool wearing in micro-milling of ceramics

The main aim of the paper is to monitor the micro-milling tool wearing process offline, by a microscopic tool measurement on one hand, and using high-frequency vibration measurement online, during the cutting process, on the other. Relations between the rake face wear stages and the measured online and offline parameters were determined applying an own-developed, artificial neural network based feature selection solution. As the main result, the experiment-based research appoints that measured vibration variable component(s) which characterizes the key, three tool wearing phases in the same way as the real rake face wearing stages occur.

There is growing number of research efforts in developing auto-scaling algorithms and tools for cloud resources. Traditional performance metrics such as CPU, memory and bandwidth usage for scaling up or down resources are not sufficient for all applications. For example, modeling and simulation experimentation is usually expected to yield results within a specific timeframe. In order to achieve this, often the quality of experiments is compromised either by restricting the parameter space to be explored or by limiting the number of replications required to give statistical confidence. In this paper, we present early stages of a deadline-based simulation experimentation framework using a micro-services auto-scaling approach. A case study of an agent-based simulation of a population physical activity behavior is used to demonstrate our framework.

Microsecond measurement resolution for process cycle diagnostics of micro-EDM milling

Ceramics are non-conductive materials, consequently, they cannot be machined directly by any electrical means. If these ceramics contain some small fractions of conductive components, e.g., as pollutant or as glue materials, they perform a certain, really low level, local and accidental flash of some conductivity. The reported research was performed on this border of science, with ceramics that are below the practical and also below the state-of-the-art conductivity level for electrical machining. Even so, micro-Electric Discharge Machining (micro-EDM) for cermaics was developed with varying and many times uncertain success. The paper describes the required, extended measuring system of a micro discharge milling machine equipped with a linear encoder, voltage, and current sensors. With the help of the installed measuring system, the ceramic discharge milling of the Al 2 O 3 –TiC mixture was tested, in particular, the process stability, the geometric transient zones and the edges of the machined grooves.
