Social media analysis has become a major instrument for data-driven tourism. It allows surveying visitor behavior on multiple scales. Considering the geographical characteristics of users' posts from social media platforms, we were able to address more specific questions related to the place type selection patterns of the visitors. In this paper, we present OPENLOSTCAT, our first-order-logic-based location categorizer applicable for modeling location types depending on Open-StreetMap data. We report our findings revealed by this tool on more than one year's collection of global-scale geotagged Twitter data, focused on potential trail-related hiking and trekking activities. We categorized visited locations in our experiments based on place accessibility-transport and trail infrastructure-, and analyzed these categories according to the travel distance taken by visitors in general to reach these areas. Our comparisons reveal seasonal characteristics, continental differences (between Europe and North America), as well as specifics related to selected recreational areas. Besides these preliminary findings available for further verification, we show both the perspectives and limitations of our approach for future improvements and experiments. © 2023 The authors and IOS Press.

Intelligent and autonomous vehicle safety is a rapidly developing field. With the increasing number of electric vehicles as well as following consumer trends, cars are getting quieter and also heavier which may lead to severe traffic accidents. To help avoiding potential dangerous situations leading to accidents, this paper proposes a collision danger model for individual pedestrians that can aid vehicle safety features and help decision making, using only forward facing optical cameras. Multi pedestrian detection and tracking is performed with a fast joint model. Semantic segmentation and classification is used to refine pedestrian contours and find the 3D positions as well as to understand the location context of pedestrians in the environment. Pedestrian position is tracked and orientation is estimated using 2D bounding boxes. The proposed pedestrian danger model is the combination of the awareness estimated from orientation, passing distance estimated from trajectories and location context from the segmentation results. © 2022 IEEE.

Optical flow-based vertical angular rate fault detection on UAVs

This paper discusses optical flow-based vertical angular rate fault detection based-on real fight IMU data and camera image sequences. The fight test platform utilizes a gimbal stabilized downward looking camera that is why only the angular rate around the inertial vertical axis can be estimated. Improvements relative to the previous work of the authors are the application of forward-backward optical flow to filter outliers, the direct detection of angular rate faults without the need for Euler angles or GPS velocities and tuning and verification on real images and fight data. After presenting the optical flow equations and the method for image-based vertical angular rate estimation the fight test scenarios and video processing steps are introduced. Four different Artificial errors are added to the IMU measurements and the fault detection applies residual thresholding and up-down counters. Tuning is based on false alarm and missed detection rates and the application of receiver operating characteristics. Finally, the estimation results and possible further improvements are presented.

Modeling dynamic systems is an important part in analysing and control of various systems arising either in health sciences or in the engineering word. Recent approaches to learn models from data are the so-called kernel-based methods and SVMs. There are strong relations to the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), to principal component analysis and canonic correlation analysis known previously from statistics. In recent form their use was extended from statistics to obtain models for dynamic systems. First we summarise the basics for the reproducing kernel based Hilbert space (RKHS) and the support vector machine (SVM) approaches. Following this it will be shown how some frequently used nonlinear models can be obtained by using these concepts. In the last part we discuss the structure estimation problem, i.e. how to determine the (least) number of features (observables) to describe the nonlinear system with a sparse representation. © 2024 IEEE.

A wide class of nonlinear systems can be described by functional series representations like Volterra- and Fliess - series. It is a known result that Volterra – series approximators as finite dimensional models for nonlinear systems can be constructed as nonlinear moving average (NLMA) operators cascaded with static polynomial nonlinearities. This motivates the use of block – oriented modeling and control of certain nonlinear systems. This talk will discuss the modeling and identification issues of frequently used block oriented (Wiener – Hammerstein) and bilinear models and some related problem like dynamic inversion and unknown input estimation. Embedding nonlinear models into linear ones (immersion) will be considered, too. An application for obtaining yaw – dynamic models for self a driving car operating at various speeds will be shown for illustration.

The paper proposes a system representation formed by a minimal collection of sufficiently long restricted trajectories generated by an observable discrete time LTI system. Conditions are given under which such a collection is a system representation and also an exhaustive parametrization of these representations is provided. These can be also interpreted as a generalized persistency condition which complements the results encountered for the controllable case. In terms of the proposed representation some system properties are investigated and a controllable-autonomous decomposition is given. Finally it is shown how the representation associated to the inverse system, to the parallel and cascade connection, respectively, can be derived.

Mono camera-based GPS spoofing detection for aerial vehicles

This paper presents mono camera-based GPS spoofing detection for aerial vehicles utilizing only image information besides the initial orientation of the vehicle. Orientation information is propagated and motion direction is estimated solely from the mono camera images through the estimation of the essential matrix. Histograms of Oriented Displacements and their correlation are considered to detect spoofing considering GPS and image-based data. Straight and turning simulated fight trajectories of a fixed wing research drone with different turbulence levels are compared to evaluate the method. The results are promising with timely detection of every spoofing scenario and without false alarm. The exploration of real fight data is the topic of future development.

This paper focuses on the stability analysis and control design methods for systems which contain data-driven elements. The motivation of the work is to bridge the gap between the results of physical models and experiments that are found during vehicle tests. It is presented a data-aided model augmentation method, which improves the accuracy of the formulated system model. Due to the incorporation of data-driven state observer, the resulted augmented model is a set of discrete time linear systems in a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) structure. It is developed a control synthesis method for the formulated system, which results in a controller with two loops. It is also provided a stability analysis method for the closed-loop system based on the parameter-memorized approach. The developed method are applied to steering control design for automated vehicles, in which problem reinforcement learning is used for achieving the state observer. This paper presents the training of the observer, the augmentation of the physical model, the results of the control design and the stability analysis through a simulation example.
