Actions are the primary way an entity interacts with other entities and acts on the external world. Action knowledge is of vital importance for behavior modeling, analysis and prediction in security informatics. In this paper, we present our approach to action knowledge extraction from Web textual data. Our approach is based on mutual bootstrapping with knowledge reasoning, which can acquire more action knowledge types and require less human participation compared with the related work. We evaluate the performance of our method and demonstrate its effectiveness through experiment. © 2012 IEEE.

The micro-blogs, as a new social media, possesses big differences with other social media on the aspect of information updating frequency, organization structure, user connection and etc, which have astonishing power of convergence and penetration. Based on this, it is proposed in this paper that Micro-Blog Public Opinion Index (MBPOI), which consists of five sub-indexes QI, II, RI, PI and CI (Quantity Index, Intensity Index, Relation Index, Polarity Index, Confidence Index) multi-dimensionally, is used to measure and evaluate the public topics and issues discussed in the micro-blogs. In the meanwhile, taking "ABB automatic world 2011" activity as example, the MBPOI prototype system is verified;it has been shown from the results that the MBPOI, which uses five sub-indexes method, owns much better effect by quantifying the topics/issues' influence in multi-dimensions and multi-levels, and provides effective micro-blogs analysis reports for monitoring and tracking the "ABB automatic world 2011" activity. © 2012 IEEE.

Background modeling from a stationary camera is a crucial component in video surveillance. Traditional methods usually adopt single feature type to solve the problem, while the performance is usually unsatisfactory when handling complex scenes. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale strategy, which combines both texture and color features, to achieve a robust and accurate solution. Our contributions are two folds: one is that we propose a novel texture operator named Scale-invariant Center-symmetric Local Ternary Pattern, which is robust to noise and illumination variations, the other is that a multi-scale fusion strategy is proposed for the issue. Our method is verified on several complex real world videos with illumination variation, soft shadows and dynamic backgrounds. We compare our method with four state-of-the-art methods, and the experimental results clearly demonstrate that our method achieves the highest classification accuracy in complex real world videos.

Opinion mining has gained increasing attention and shown great practical value in recent years. Existing research on opinion mining mainly focuses on the extraction of lexicon orientation and opinion targets. The explanations of opinions, which are potentially valuable for many applications, are totally ignored. To address this specific research challenge, in this paper, we propose an approach to extract the explanation of reason and/or consequence behind an opinion via learning word pairs and using causal indicators from Chinese online reviews. We also improve our word pair based method by constructing clusters of word paris. Experiments on a Chinese business review corpus show that our method is feasible and effective. © 2012 IEEE.

Rotation Estimation for Mobile Robot Based on Single-axis Gyroscope and Monocular Camera

The rotation matrix estimation problem is a keypoint for mobile robot localization, navigation, and control. Based on the quaternion theory and the epipolar geometry, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is proposed to estimate the rotation matrix by using a single-axis gyroscope and the image points correspondence from a monocular camera. The experimental results show that the precision of mobile robot s yaw angle estimated by the proposed EKF algorithm is much better than the results given by the image-only and gyroscope-only method, which demonstrates that our method is a preferable way to estimate the rotation for the autonomous mobile robot applications.

Food safety events are typical public security events that draw great public concern. In food safety events, millions of netizens pay close attention to the event, express their opinions online and thus influence the decisions of government or food producers. Modeling netizen groups, especially the dynamics of their opinions in these events, can help us understand the mechanism and evolvement of such events and provide valuable insights for social management. However, conventional computational models, such as agent-based models, are usually constructed manually. In this paper, we propose an approach to acquiring netizen group's opinions from online comments to facilitate the modeling of food safety events. We conduct experimental study on typical events happened in China and empirically evaluate the performance of our proposed approach. The results verify the effectiveness of the approach. © 2012 IEEE.

A New Calibration Method for an Inertial and Visual Sensing System

The relative pose between inertial and visual sensors equipped in autonomous robots is calibrated in two steps. In the first step, the sensing system is moved along a line, the orientations in the relative pose are computed from at least five corresponding points in the two images captured before and after the movement. In the second step, the translation parameters in the relative pose are obtained with at least two corresponding points in the two images captured before and after one step motion. Experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a symbol identifier based recognition and relative positioning approach suitable for multi-robot systems is proposed. The symbol identifier is composed of central area and peripheral area, and there exists radial spokes in central area. The recognition approach utilizes some features including luminance feature of center point, luminance difference between center point and its ambient region, the number and distribution of spokes as well as the shape of peripheral area to filter the points in the image. Finally, the resulting pixel points set to characterize the center points of symbol identifiers is generated. On this basis, the positions of these center points relative to the camera are then calculated. The proposed approach is verified by the experiments. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Identification and analysis of tissue-specific (TS) genes and their regulatory activities play an important role in the understanding of mechanisms of organisms, disease diagnosis and drug design. In this paper, we designed a pipeline for the discovery of promoter motifs for tissue-specific genes. The pipeline consists of three phases: motif searching, motif merging and motif validation. The motif searching phase integrated three algorithms: MEME, AlignACE and Gibbs Sampling. In the second phase, we proposed a motif merging method, which is based on Bayesian probabilistic principles, to reduce redundancies of motifs from the first phase. Lastly, the motif validation phase verified the statistical significance of discovered motifs using a Bayesian Hypothesis Test approach. We performed the analysis on the sequences of promoter regions (-449bp-1000bp) of 4,552 human tissue-specific genes across 82 tissues and 924 housekeeping genes. The distributions of motifs in different promoter regions show that most motifs prefer to be in the proximal region (+500∼50bp, -50bp∼-500bp) of promoters. © 2012 IEEE.
