Calibration of a functional structural plant model is a challenging task because of the complexity of model structure. Parameter estimation through gradient-based optimization technique was highly dependent on initial parameter values. This motivated the use of global sensitivity analysis technique to choose parameter subset in fitting the data sequence. Global sensitivity indices were computed using the source sink ratio as the output of interest, which regulates all organ growth. By fitting on chrysanthemum data from nine sampling dates, it is shown that sensitivity analysis method helps to identify the influential parameters for a given sampling date. As a result, fitting process is less dependent on the initial parameter values. Current work provides a new method of calibrating a plant growth model with multiple outputs. © 2012 IEEE.

Over the past years, many efforts have been made in the estimation of the physiological age based on the human MRI brain images. In this paper, we propose a novel regression model with surface-based features to estimate the human age automatically and accurately. First, individual regional surface-based features (thickness, mean curvature, Gaussian curvature and surface area) from the MRI image were extracted, which were subsequently used to construct combined regional features and the brain networks. Then, the individual regional surface-based features, brain network with surface-based features and combined regional surface-based features were used for age regression by relevance vector machine (RVM), respectively. In the experiment, a dataset of 360 healthy subjects aging from 20 to 82 years was used to evaluate the performance. Experimental results based on 10-fold cross validation show that, compared to the previous methods, age estimation model with combined surface-based features can yield a remarkably high accuracy (mean absolute error: 4.6 years and root mean squared error: 5.6 years) and a significantly high correlation coefficient (r = 0.94), which is the best age estimation result as far as we know and suggests that surface-based features are more powerful than other features used in previous methods for human age estimation. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Agent-based evacuation modeling approach is gained more and more attention for investigating human cognitive capabilities and social behaviors in building fires. This paper mainly overviews the research about various agent-based evacuation models. For the decision-making reflects the intelligence of agent individual, we define three types of behavior decision-making models for agent individual based on the collected literatures and sum up the characteristics of each type. Aiming at crowd' important influence on evacuation processes, we also sum up two types of agent-based crowd modeling approaches to simulate crowd evacuation processes and give corresponding cases. Finally, after summing up the existing problems, the outlooks of the research from computaional experiments point of view is proposed. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper deals with an approach to the automatic construction and optimization of the knowledge mesh (KM) based on the user's function requirements. Once a KM multiple set operation expression is obtained, a new KM can be inferred from the expression by the developed KM-based inference engine and transformed into its corresponding KMS (knowledgeable manufacturing system) software automatically by the developed automatic program construction software so as to realize the self-reconfiguration of the KMS. Thus, the automatic construction and optimization of a KM multiple set operation expression is equivalent to the automatic construction and optimization of its corresponding KM and KMS software. To explore the automatic construction and optimization of the new KM by the user's function requirements, an automatic construction procedure of a KM aiming at the user's maximum function-satisfaction is proposed. Firstly, the fuzzy function-satisfaction degree relationships of the users' requirements for the KM functions are defined, and so are the multiple fuzzy function-satisfaction degrees of the relationships. Secondly, operations (union, intersection and minus) on both fuzzy and multiple fuzzy function-satisfaction degrees are proposed and clarified, along with the proof that there exists a one-to-one mapping between the KM multiple set operation expression and the KM-function-satisfaction degree expression. Then, the optimization model of the KM multiple set operation expression is constructed and proved to be very NP-hard. And finally, the KM multiple set operation expression is optimized by the hybrid genetic-tabu algorithm, with the steps of the KM's automatic construction presented in detail as well. Based upon the above, the KM's automatic construction and optimization are illustrated by an actual KM example which corresponds to the management information system (MIS) software used in a vehicle body plant. The proposed approach proves to be very effective. © 2011

As a new research field in wireless sensor network (WSN), wireless video sensor network (WVSN) makes surveillance multifunctional and intelligent, with rich and intuitive sensing information. It attracts more and more researchers' attention. We design and implement a wireless video sensor network prototype system, using WIFI as the wireless communication solution and CMOS video camera as the front-end sensor. The wireless video node adopts ARM11 based embedded platform. As back-end processing algorithm, the node realizes moving object detection. Finally, we verify the sensor network system. WIFI network can transmit video sequences smoothly. The moving object detection algorithm performs well. © 2012 IEEE.

Smart homes of the future will include automation systems that will provide lower energy consumption costs and comfortable environments to end users. In this work we propose an algorithm, based on the "Mixed-Integer Linear Programming" paradigm, able to find the optimal task and energy scheduling in realistic residential scenarios, in order to reduce costs and satisfy the user requirements at the same time. Both the static and the dynamic case studies have been addressed on purpose and results obtained from computer simulations seem to confirm the effectiveness of the idea. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper an optimal controller for battery management in smart home environments is presented in order to save costs and minimize energy waste. The considered scenario includes a load profile that must always be satisfied, a battery-system that is able to storage electrical energy, a photovoltaic (PV) panel, and the main grid that is used when it is necessary to satisfy the load requirements or charge the battery. The optimal controller design is based on a class of adaptive critic designs (ACDs) called action dependent heuristic dynamic programming (ADHDP). Results obtained with this scheme outperform the ones obtained by using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Aging of sensors, faults in the read-out electronics and environmental changes are some immediate examples of time variant mechanisms violating that stationarity hypothesis mostly assumed in the design of classification systems. Such changes, known in the related literature as concept drift, modify the probability density function of measurements, hence impairing the accuracy of the classifier. To cope with these mechanisms, active classifiers such as the Just-in-time adaptive ones, are needed to detect a change in stationarity and modify the classifier configuration accordingly to track the process evolution. At the same time, when the process is stationary, new available supervised information is integrated in the classifier to improve over time its classification accuracy. This paper introduces a JIT adaptive classifier based on support vector machines able to track changes in the process generating the data with computational complexity and memory requirements well below that of current JIT classifiers integrating k-nearest neighbor solutions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We consider a realistic wireless sensor deployment strategy by which mobile robot deploys sensor nodes when it moves along the linear backbone network with some branches. Because of its finite load capacity, the robot has to repeatedly move back to the position where all sensors are temporarily stored and reload sensor nodes, which leads to the robot has to travel the path many times and consumes more energy. We present a Shortest Traveling Path for Robot (STPR) algorithm by which the robot can reduce the traveling path and achieve the required coverage. All nodes are stored at the temporary starting point and mobile robot continuously loads sensors and moves to the destination, dropping some sensor to meet the basic coverage and connectivity requirements. The mobile robot arrives at the far intersection and deploys sensors along the branches in accordance with the algorithm rules, and then returns the recent branch when having enough sensors. Otherwise the robot moves back and deploys sensors on the back path. The robot reloads sensors and repeats the deployment process until all the branches and backbone is finished. The paper proves that the algorithm is effective compared with the common methods. Simulation results show that the algorithm effectively reduces the moving distance at the randomly generated network. © 2012 IEEE.
