We consider the problem of learning with instances defined over a space of sets of vectors. We derive a new positive definite kernel f(A, B) defined over pairs of matrices A, B based on the concept of principal angles between two linear subspaces. We show that the principal angles can be recovered using only inner-products between pairs of column vectors of the input matrices thereby allowing the original column vectors of A, B to be mapped onto arbitrarily high-dimensional feature spaces. We apply this technique to inference over image sequences applications of face recognition and irregular motion trajectory detection.

This paper describes the aims, methodology and results of an empirical research project. The aim was to gather new insight about how collaborative decision-making processes in the conceptual engineering design phase of the product development process takes place. The insight contributes to bridging the gap between the theoretical development of new decision-making methods in academia and the needs of practitioners. The researchers observed, recorded and transcribed three workshops involving groups that were engaged in the collaborative decision-making processes. Through analysing the transcripts, a set of decision-making related activities was identified. Each activity's time consumption was quantified, and a number of decision-making process models at different levels of detail were developed. During this analysis, various observations on particular process characteristics were made. It was observed that generating formal structures and documentation was beneficial to the decision-making process. This was particularly true with respect to developing problem understanding and consistency. The outcomes should be valuable for the design and development of improved decision-support systems.

This paper presents a novel four-port model for a 90/spl deg/ coplanar waveguide bend based on the decomposition of the waveguide into two coupled slot lines. The effect of the bend discontinuity is that of a non-uniform coupled line system due to the different slot lengths in the structure. The new model consists of uniformly coupled lines and cascaded uncoupled transmission line sections. The parameters for the coupled line system are obtained from the geometry of the bend. The modal transmission coefficients obtained with the model match well with full-wave simulations. The salient feature of the model is the simplified illustration of the frequency-dependent effects of the bend discontinuity. The occurrence of mode-conversion in the two-mode system and its effects on two-port measurements are also described.

VPN services have been available for decades but not widely used until recently. A combination of new VPN technologies, network technologies and business communication requirements is the driving force behind the take-up of VPN services. This paper gives an overview of recent VPN solutions and analyses their scalability and flexibility. VPN solutions are categorized and related to potential customer segments. Furthermore, measurements based on a large north-American carrier's backbone are presented. The results show that provision of a moderate number of large VPNs puts higher constraints on the provider network than a large number of moderately sized VPNs.

In this work, we have characterized permittivity of human epidermis (the epidermis: the outer skin layer) using microwave up to 110GHz. A one mm-diameter coaxial probe was adopted to increase measuring bandwidth as well as to enhance the spatial resolution. Pork was used to discriminate the permittivities between muscle tissues and fat tissues. The influence of the sample thickness was also studied. Considering several factors, the permittivity was measured on epidermis of the human palm and the wrist. In addition, a relaxation phenomenon observed in the wrist skin, revealed by Cole-Cole parameters, suggested that it originated from high water content beneath thin epidermis of the wrist skin. A relaxation phenomenon revealed by Cole-Cole parameters was observed in the wrist skin. This explains that high water content cells exist beneath thin epidermis of the wrist skin.

In this paper, we present a technique that can efficiently identify anomalous accesses to the database by using an authorization rule system which has been designed for implementing a user dynamic access control system which will secure inter-operation of independently managed database services in an open, distributed environment. Traditional authorization models do not adequately meet access control requirements typical to databases, a separate authorization rule subsystem has been designed which is based on temporal event matching language (TEML). The rule specified in this security system is in event-time-condition-action (ETCA) format. XML is used for defining the authorization rules and the security rules. We could extract XML access control data from several platforms and represent the access control data for the entire enterprise through a common model. Similarly, access control data under an enterprise model can be translated to ones that are native to the platforms.

This paper investigates time-invariant linear systems subject to input and state constraints. It is shown that the recoverable region (which is the largest domain of attraction that is theoretically achievable) can be semiglobally stabilized by continuous nonlinear feedbacks while satisfying the constraints. Moreover, a reduction technique is presented which shows, when trying to compute the recoverable region, that we only need to compute the recoverable region for a system of lower dimension which generally leads to a considerable simplification in the computational effort.

The authors present a study of the finite word length (FWL) implementation for digital controller structures with sparseness consideration. A closed-loop stability related measure is derived, taking into account the number of trivial elements in a controller realisation. A practical design procedure is presented, which first obtains a controller realisation that maximises a lower bound of the proposed measure, and then uses a stepwise algorithm to make the realisation sparse. Simulation results show that the proposed design procedure yields computationally efficient controller realisations with an enhanced FWL closed-loop stability performance.
