The engineering team experience with the intelligent ground vehicle competition (IGVC) is described. Hundreds of students have learned a great deal about cutting-edge technologies in automotive engineering technologies. They have utilized professional design procedures and performed hands-on fabrication and testing. They have merged electrical and mechancial engineering along with computer science and physics. They have also learned to work in teams and to understand the full product realization process.

A GUI software development system for digital AV applications

The scale of software on digital AV appliances that handle large-volume multichannel digital data has been increased by the GUIs (graphical user interfaces) loaded on them in recent years. In addition, the GUIs of AV appliances use remote controls having cursor keys. Focus management must be performed by these to point to the object of operation, in contrast to the mouse, which is capable of pointing on the entire screen. Since focus management changes with changes in the specifications of GUIs, such as screen layouts and the like, software may not be reusable. In this paper, a development system that attempts to improve the productivity of GUI software requiring focus management is discussed from the points of view of (1) a software design model based on an object-oriented MVC model, (2) an execution model with good efficiency corresponding to the design model, (3) development tools performing synthesis of GUI software and automatic generation of focus management procedures, and (4) applications and evaluations of the system. In an example of the application of the system, software productivity with a GUI specification change was improved by a factor of three. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The Level 1 Muon Trigger subsystem for BTeV will be implemented using the same architectural building blocks as the BTeV Level 1 Pixel Trigger: pipelined field programmable gate arrays feeding a farm of dedicated processing elements. The muon trigger algorithm identifies candidate tracks, and is sensitive to the muon charge (sign);candidate dimuon events are identified by complementary charge track-pairs. To insure that the trigger is operating effectively, the trigger development team is actively collaborating in an independent multi-university research program for reliable, self-aware, fault adaptive behavior in real-time embedded systems (RTES). Key elements of the architecture, algorithm, performance, and engineered reliability are presented.

An Adaptive speech enhancement method in high noise environment is proposed in this paper. The whole algorithm is based on wavelet transform and the improved Stein's Unbiased Estimate of Risk (SURE). This work improves the basic wavelet shrinkage method from shrinkage function and enhancement algorithm. Firstly, the detection algorithm is introduced to estimate the noise feature and improve the speech intelligibility. Secondly, we present a simple shrinkage function that is continuous like soft and more stable than hard. Finally, we employ Least Mean Squares (LMS) to estimate shrinkage threshold, which can adaptively track the changes of the system in real time and continually seek the optimum in some statistical sense. These modifications enable the system to handle colored and nonstationary noises. To evaluate the system performance, we have employed plentiful speech data that are obtained under practical environment. Subjective and objective evaluations show that the proposed system improves the performance and speech intelligibility in noisy environment.

The founding of the Computing Curricula 2001 Task Force to focus on computer engineering is discussed. One of the primary objectives is to define computer engineering as a discipline, distinct from the fields of electrical engineering and computer science. As a basis for curriculum development, computer engineering is defined in terms of the unique knowledge and activities it embodies. computer engineering focuses on the design of computing elements and computer based systems, and integrated hardware and software and provides human interfaces to produce efficient cost-effective total systems to solve technical problems.

engineering programs that exist in a liberal arts environment struggle to be understood. They constantly have to defend their program to university administrators, administrators who are not engineers or science oriented by education. This paper outlines the development of engineering as an intellectual discipline, putting it on equal terms with arts and sciences. Next, the paper traces the development of Baylor University's engineering program from 1979 to present. The motivations for this engineering program and the growth of the program over the past two decades are examined. Baylor University's Baptist heritage has also significantly impacted the present program. The present program is analyzed with the constraints imposed by accreditation and the institution itself. The conclusion reached is that there are few academic courses available for development of a liberal arts concentration. Baylor University is in the midst of defining itself in terms of a 10-year vision. This has resulted in an Academic Summit which is imposing additional liberal arts requirements. In the end, three questions are posed: 1) Are Specialized Liberal Arts Courses Required?;2) Can engineering & Liberal Arts be Integrated?;and 3) How Can the Liberal Arts Support engineering? Lastly, this paper examines the integration of liberal arts into engineering education to develop a Christian worldview as stated in Baylor University's mission statement. The authors conclude that a common liberal arts core for Baylor University is not the answer for engineering programs and proposals are given to satisfy liberal arts requirements.

Cluster-based multimedia server needs to support large amount of connections with various response time requirements simultaneously. Among the connections, the real-time media streams are bandwidth intensive, and aggressively compete for the transmission bandwidth with other type of streams, thus a real-time sch.duling algorithm is in demand to differentiate between the real-time streams and best-effort type flows, and leverage the bandwidth allocation to deliver a timely and overly optimized performance. In this paper, a queue length proportional (QLP) sch.duling algorithm is proposed to provide a delay-differentiated, dynamic and adjustable bandwidth sch.duling to meet the time constraints of real-time streams while maintains a minimum bandwidth share for the best-effort type stream to avoid its starvation in high workload situations. An analytical solution to performance metrics such as average waiting time, throughput and miss deadline ratio is derived based on a two-class queuing model. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared to the static priority sch.duling (SPS) model, the QLP sch.me gives a satisfied miss deadline ratio for real-time streams under heavy workload conditions, while outperforms the SPS algorithm in moderate traffic modes with better overall throughputs.

Tracking multiple sinusoids using Kwan-Martin's algorithm is a popular approach but suffers from convergence problems due to the use of IIR filters for the notch or bandpass stages. By replacing each IIR filter with a simple FIR 2nd-order notch filter and slaving the IIR filters to these 2nd-order filters, many of the convergence problems can be solved. Using this approach a three-notch system using Grey-Markel Notch filters is able to resolve three different signals separated by 6 degrees at various locations on the unit circle.

In this paper, we propose a new similarity measure determination based on the NURBS-Warping method. In this method, the query image represented by the Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) descriptor is warped to best fit the shape of the database image. The similarity between two images is determined by measuring the effort being spent in the warping process. Four similarity parameters are derived to reflect the effort spent throughout the warping process. These parameters are the Total Cumulative Change in the Position of the Control Points (TCCPCP), Total Cumulative Change in the Curvature of the Control Points (TCCCCP), Total Cumulative Voting Distance Score (TCVDS) and degree of matching, which are used to compute the similarity measure for each database image. The retrieved database images are ranked according to the computed similarity measure. A set of experiments is carried out to investigate the characteristic of each similarity parameters that influence the similarity measure computation independently. We also validate the effectiveness of the computed similarity measure for retrieving a set of database images based on the human similarity judgement. The retrieval results of the proposed method are compared with the Curvature Scale Space (CSS) method proposed by Mokhtarian. The overall experiments results show that the similarity measure derived from the NURBS-Warping method show good retrieval results in a highly similar database.

Considering the agent-based modeling and mapping in manufacturing system, some system models are described in this paper, which are included: Domain Based Hierarchical Structure (DBHS), Cascading Agent Structure (CAS), Proximity Relation structure (PRS), and Bus-based network structure (BNS). In DBHS, one sort of agents, called static agents, individually acts as Domain Agents, Resources Agents, UserInterface Agents and Gateway Agents. And the others, named mobile agents, are the brokers of task and process flow. Static agents representing a subsystem may itself be an agent-based network and should learn as the mobile agents to deal with new situation. Mobile agents move around the network domains taking advantage of the resources to fulfill their goals. In CAS, We use Unified Modeling Language (UML) to build up the agent-based manufacturing system It is said Enterprise agent (main agent) has factory agents together with some directly jurisdictional workshop agents, cell agents, and individual resource agents. Likewise, factory agent has workshop agents together with some directly jurisdictional cell agents and individual resource agents, and so on. In PRS, the resources agents are located together by its function and abilities. There is only one agent behaves as the task-announcer. The communication just occurs among the Proximity Relational agents. In BNS, It is very similar with the society of human being connected with a network, some agents, such as 'cost calculating', are just cope with the matter-of-fact job. And some agents run as the individual resources that can negotiate with each other and advertise a necessary message within the whole domain or a given group of agents. The administration just relies on the individual address of agents and the group ID code of agents.
