Learning automata select an action from a finite set of their available actions and update their strategy on the basis of response received from the random environment using what is known as a reinforcement sch.me. As an environment changes, the ordering of the actions with performance criterion may vary. If a learning automaton with a fixed strategy is used in such an environment, it may become less expedient with time and even inexpedient. However, using the learning sch.me that has sufficient flexibility to track the better actions makes the performance improved. In this paper, a variable structure learning automaton network with periodic random environment is proposed. The results of some numerical simulations show that our model can be used for tracking some periodic nonstationary environment for which an upper bound on the period is known.

Laboratory model test results for the settlement of a square surface foundation supported by geogrid-reinforced sand and subjected to transient load are presented. The tests were conducted with one model foundation at one relative density of compaction using only one type of geogrid. Based on the model test results, it appears that geogrid reinforcement does reduce the settlement of the foundation. The settlement reduction factor is a function of the depth of reinforcement.

An alternative control solution for a switching power supply using a delta-sigma (/spl Delta//spl Sigma/) modulator in place of a PWM controller is presented. The /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulator controller does not exhibit the spikes in the noise spectrum characteristic of the PWM controller. A multi-bit /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulator controller reduces the output noise floor below the conventional PWM controller noise floor. While the PWM is shown to have better power transfer efficiency, possible alternatives are suggested to increase the /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulator controller efficiency.

Designing effective congestion control strategies for broadband networks is known to be difficult because of the variety of dynamic parameters involved such as link speeds, burstiness of the traffic, and the distances between traffic sources and switching nodes. We propose a traffic management sch.me, which is insensitive to the propagation delay between the sources and switching nodes. We achieve this by combining connection admission control with a bandwidth allocation strategy. By seeking the cooperation of the available bit rate (ABR) sources (to limit their peak cell rate, PCR) at the time of admission of a variable bit rate (VBR) source to the network, the sch.me eliminates the continuous congestion control. Our simulations show that the strategy is able to eliminate the ABR cell losses, achieves effective server and buffer utilization, and provides bounded delays to the VBR traffic (unlike the case without any controls).

Because of the growing investment in both IP and ATM networks, designing efficient IP-ATM gateways for interconnecting these two networks has become very important. One of the main design issues is buffer dimensioning at the gateway for optimum performance. Modeling IP-ATM gateways helps obtaining the optimum design. However, due to very complex nature of an IP-ATM gateway, only models for gateways with infinite buffers have been studied previously. In this paper, an M/G/1/N model for studying the performance of IP-ATM gateway with finite buffers is presented. The performance of the IP-ATM gateway as a function of the buffer size is studied through analysis of the proposed model. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified through simulation.

The paper proposes a networking solution that represents the first step towards the integration of circuit and packet switching techniques directly in the WDM layer, considered to be a fundamental milestone on the way of creating the next generation Internet (NGI). Focusing on ring networks using extant optical devices, the proposed solution allows for the all-optical transmission of individual packets and circuits via a "tell and go" establishment of lightpaths (wavelength routes). The integration of the two alternative switching techniques is obtained by a novel multi-token control protocol shown to maximize bandwidth utilization, minimize latency and scale ideally in the network.

A frequency scramble based approach for removing the blocking effects, which can be applied to conventional discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based transform coding without introducing significant blurring, is proposed. It is very simple and effective and it can be easily realized using available hardware. The blocking effect is less noticeable in the processed images than in the ones using existing filtering techniques. The hardware sch.me which can be used in real time distributions is discussed.

It is difficult to assess hypothetical models in poorly measured domains such as neuroendocrinology. Without a large library of observations to constrain inference, the execution of such incomplete models implies making assumptions. Mutually exclusive assumptions must be kept in separate worlds. We define a general abductive multiple-worlds engine that assesses such models by (i) generating the worlds and (ii) tests if these worlds contain known behaviour. World generation is constrained via the use of relevant envisionment. We describe QCM, a modeling language for compartmental models that can be processed by this inference engine. This tool has been used to find faults in theories published in international refereed journals;i.e. QCM can detect faults which are invisible to other methods. The generality and computational limits of this approach are discussed. In short, this approach is applicable to any representation that can be compiled into an and-or graph, provided the graphs are not too big or too intricate (fanout < 7).
