Today it is very common for software systems to be built by teams located in more than one country. For example, a project team may be located in the US while the team lead resides in Sweden. How then should students be trained for this kind of work? Senior design or capstone projects offer students real-world hands-on experience but rarely while working internationally. One reason is that most instructors do not have international business contacts that allow them to find project sponsors in other countries. Another reason is the fear of having to invest a huge amount of time managing an international project. In this paper we present the general concepts related to "International Capstone Project Exchanges", the basic model behind the exchanges (student teams are led by an industry sponsor residing in a different country) and several alternate models that have been used in practice. We will give examples from projects in the US, Germany, Sweden, Australia, and Colombia. We have extended the model beyond software projects to include engineering projects as well as marketing, and journalism. We conclude with a description of an International Capstone Project Exchange website that we have developed to aid any university in establishing their own international project exchange.

With the increasing computational demand, efficiency and effectiveness of cache and virtual memory become an important area to be looked into. By utilising the correct caching method, an architecture would achieve maximum performance with minimum resources. To choose the appropriate configuration, the fundamental of cache and virtual memory must be understood by every engineer. Developed by the authors, this project aims to deliver a web-based simulator to visualize cache and virtual memory processes better. The simulator provides users with interactive tutorials and simulations to help them better comprehend the fundamental concepts of memory management. PARACACHE is implemented using HTML assisted by CSS in styling and JavaScript in logic. Bootstrap is incorporated to handle different size of screen across various web-platforms. The key goal of the web-based simulator is to summarise both the memory allocation efficiency along with its hardware implementation cost. This will enable the user to have a thorough analysis and comparison of various cache mapping sch.mes supported by interactive graphical method. In the paper, we compare PARACACHE to various existing systems and explore the salient features in detail.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a method that records electrical activities of the brain. Reliable interpretation of its measurements rely on accurate correspondence of the scalp electrodes and the underlying cortical surface. To standardize comparative studies international 10/20, 10/10 and 10/5 systems for the placement of electrodes have been proposed to specify the locations of scalp EEG sensors under the assumption that there is a consistent correlation between these sites and the structure of the cerebral cortex. However, several studies have demonstrated that the cranio-cerebral correlations vary greatly. For enhancing the electrophysiological analyses, an algorithm is presented in this paper, allowing the multimodal visualization of EEG and magnetic resonance scan in the patient's native space. The key to our solution is twofold: An interactive imagebased electrode placement algorithm and an extended GPU-based multimodal raycasting algorithm. Experimental results show that with the present tool one can easily assess the cranio-cerebral correspondences even when the brain tissue is displaced by structural lesions. © 2016 IEEE.

Many computer vision problems involve data with multiple views, where each view corresponds to a certain type of feature. To integrate information from multiple views in the unsupervised setting, multi-view clustering methods have been developed to cluster multiple views simultaneously. Most existing methods only consider the case that each example appears in all the views. However, data with partial views is often occurred in real applications. For example, several certain sensors sometimes have faults, then the data may not be captured completely, which will lead to the case that only partial views are available. In this paper, we propose a nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) method for partial multi-view clustering, which incorporates the cluster similarity and manifold preserving constraints into an unified framework. The basic idea of the proposed method, named Double Constrained NMF (DCNMF), is to push clustering solutions of different views from the same examples towards a common membership matrice, and to maintain the latent geometric structure of the views simultaneously. Moreover, we develop an efficient optimization sch.me for the proposed method. Experiments on several two-view datasets demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method on partial multi-view clustering tasks.

Many distributed machine learning (ML) systems exhibit high communication overhead when dealing with big data sets. Our investigations showed that popular distributed ML systems could spend about an order of magnitude more time on network communication than computation to train ML models containing millions of parameters. Such high communication overhead is mainly caused by two operations: pulling parameters and pushing gradients. In this paper, we propose an approach called Timed Dataflow (TDF) to deal with this problem via reducing network traffic using three techniques: a timed parameter storage system, a hybrid parameter filter and a hybrid gradient filter. In particular, the timed parameter storage technique and the hybrid parameter filter enable servers to discard unchanged parameters during the pull operation, and the hybrid gradient filter allows servers to drop gradients selectively during the push operation. Therefore, TDF could reduce the network traffic and communication time significantly. Extensive performance evaluations in a real testbed showed that TDF could reduce up to 77% and 79% of network traffic for the pull and push operations, respectively. As a result, TDF could speed up model training by a factor of up to 4 without sacrificing much accuracy for some popular ML models, compared to systems not using TDF.

The high development of emerging computing paradigms, such as Ubiquitous Computing, Mobile Computing, and Social Computing, has brought us a big change from all walks of our work, life, learning and entertainment. Especially, with the high accessibility of social networking services along with the increasingly pervasive use of portable wireless mobile computing devices, more and more populations have been engaged into this kind of integration of real physical world and cyber digital space, which can be called the hyper world. To help people live better in the highly developed information society, the so-called cyber-individual (Cyber-I), which is far beyond a user model or a software agent to assist a user, has been proposed to provide the most comprehensive digital entities for its corresponding Real-I in terms of the individual's experience, behavior, and thinking as well as his or her birth, growth, and death. In this study, we concentrate on the personal data analytics to facilitate the cyber individual modeling. Organic Stream is introduced to systematically organize and refine the personal stream data, which can help improve the data processing and management in the CI-Spine tier and CI-Pivot tier of Cyber-I. The DSUN (Dynamically Socialized User Networking) model is employed to better utilize the collective intelligence from a group of users, which can help improve the CI-Mind tier to make Cyber-I to become more robust. Based on these, we discuss the functional modules for the facilitation of cyber individual modeling. Finally, a scenario is given, and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate that the valuable outcomes from the personal analysis can be utilized to enrich the Cyber-I, and provide users with more suitable services.

Passive network monitoring is important for the critical applications of network diagnosis and criminal investigation. As in multi-channel wireless networks, the sniffer-channel assignment problem faces a tradeoff between exploitation and exploration. In this paper, we investigate this problem in a practical scenario. Different from the existing literature, we assume that the knowledge of the users' activities is not known a priori, and there exists capture uncertainty due to unreliable monitoring conditions. Furthermore, we consider the case of sniffer redundancy deployment, which enables multiple sniffers to monitor one channel to enhance capture reliability. Our problem is then formulated as a combinatorial multi-arm bandit problem. We propose an online learning policy, in which sniffer-channel assignment is dynamically decided based on the learning results of the users' activities. We further develop a greedy algorithm to achieve the channel assignment decision in polynomial time. Our solution is evaluated by both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. Simulation results show that our policy achieves logarithmic regret in time and outperforms the learning policy without consideration of sniffer redundancy deployment.

As technology scaling is already enabling the integration of tens of hundreds of cores on a single chip, kilo-core chip multiprocessors (CMPs) are expected to be available within a decade. However, metallic-based on-chip interconnects may not scale to support kilo-core architectures due to increased hop count, high power dissipation, and increased latency. Emerging technologies such as silicon-photonics and wireless interconnects are under serious consideration as they show promising results for power-efficient, low-latency, and scalable on-chip interconnects. However, photonic technology suffers from scalability issues due to high component cost and complex arbitration while wireless technology lacks sufficient bandwidth for on-chip communication. In this paper, we propose an architecture called Optical-Wireless Network-on-Chip (OWN) that leverages the advantages of wireless and photonic technologies while circumventing the disadvantages of these two emerging technologies. Kilo-core OWN is designed such that one-hop photonic interconnect is used up to 64 cores (called a cluster). For communication beyond a cluster, one-hop wireless interconnect is proposed to enhance scalability. Both wireless and photonic bandwidths are efficiently shared using time division multiplexing (TDM). Moreover, packets routed across technologies are guaranteed to be deadlock-free. Our area results indicate that OWN requires 34% more area than hybrid-wireless architectures and 35.5% less area than photonic architectures. The energy/bit for OWN is 30.36% less than wireless and 13.99% more than photonic architecture. OWN demonstrates higher saturation throughput when compared to wired, wireless, and photonic technologies for synthetic network traffic.

The dynamic nature and complexity of Internet make the surveillance of network behavior more and more difficult. To effectively survey anomaly network behaviors, the clonal selection principle is used to construct a surveillance algorithm for transmission control protocol (TCP) anomaly network behaviors in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, TCP network data are collected. Key features of network data are extracted to be the source data for the surveillance of network behavior. Network feature data are pretreated to create the data set of network operation. Common characteristics of network operations are estimated to create the data set of network behavior. The normal network behavior library and anomaly network behavior library are constructed to provide fundamental training data for the surveillance of network behavior. Essential mechanisms of the clonal selection principle are simulated. The data sets of monitor are defined. Three stages of dynamic evolution of monitors are simulated. The match method for monitor and network behavior are constructed to recognize different kinds of anomaly network behavior to survey TCP anomaly network behaviors.
