In this paper we propose a novel approach for solving constrained optimization problems using genetic algorithms. The main emphasis of this algorithm is to be problem independent and to produce consistent results in terms of the quality of feasible solutions. The basic characteristic of this algorithm is the complete ignorance of the objective function till at least one feasible solution is found. The elitist sch.me is used to assure consistent results and to help guide the stochastic search to the more fruitful regions of the parameter space. We have used rank based fitness assignment and have experimented with two ranking sch.mes. We have developed an empirical analysis and supporting experimental comparisons to favor one ranking sch.me over the other. Irrespective of the ranking sch.me used our algorithm has performed well providing at least one feasible solution for every run of the algorithm and producing results that are comparable to the best published before.

We examine the performance of a direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system used in a spectral overlay mode in the Microwave Landing System (MLS) band, from 5091-5150 MHz. The purpose of the overlay system is to enable increased spectral efficiency (higher data throughput), for future potential aeronautical datalink communications. We estimate the performance degradation incurred by both systems for a range of transmit powers, DS-SS bandwidths and data rates, and example MLS and DS-SS system parameters. We also explore the use of multicarrier (MC) DS-SS signaling techniques. Our study uses both analysis and computer simulations. We provide examples that explore both MLS and DS-SS system parameter values appropriate for the successful application of overlay.

This paper presents a method for hand gesture classification using a view-based approach for representation and Artificial Neural Network for classification. This approach uses a cumulative image-difference technique in which time between the sequences of images is implicitly captured in the representation of action. This results in the construction of Motion History Images. These images are used to compute the geometrical image moments, which are invariant to scale, rotation and translation. The classification is then performed using back propagation based multilayer perceptron (MLP) Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The preliminary experiments show that such a system can classify human hand gestures with a classification accuracy of 96%.

This paper presents a novel technique for classifying human hand gestures based on stationary wavelet transform (SWT). It uses view-based approach for representation of hand actions, and artificial neural networks (ANN) for classification. This approach uses a cumulative image-difference technique where the time between the sequences of images is implicitly captured in the representation of action. This results in the construction of Motion History Images (MHI). These MHI's are decomposed into 4 sub images using SWT, approximate and detailed images. The approximate image is fed as the global image descriptors to the ANN for classification. The recognition criterion is established using backpropagation based multilayer perceptron (MLP). The preliminary experiments show that such a system can classify human hand gestures with a classification accuracy of 97%.
We compare the performance of direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems used in spectral overlay mode in two different aeronautical bands: the Instrument Landing System glide...

This paper discusses the control of the compensation voltages in dynamic voltage restorers (DVR). On analyzing the power circuit of a DVR system, control limitations and control targets are presented for the compensation voltage control. Based on the preceeded power stage analysis, a novel controller for the compensation voltages in DVRs is proposed by a feedforward control sch.me. This paper also discusses the time delay problems in the control system of DVRs. Digital control systems inevitably have control delay due to its the sampling of signal, the switching frequency of an inverter, and the signal delay due to sensor itself. The total signal delay is considerable in real implementation and it endanger the system stablity. This paper analyzes the relationship among the control delay, closed loop damping factor, and the output filter parameters of DVR inverters. Based on the control system analysis, a guideline is proposed to design the appropriate output filter parameters and the inverter switching frequency for DVRs. The proposed theory is verified by an experimental DVR system, which is controlled in full digital manner.

It is known that parallel type mechanisms have many singularities than serial type mechanisms. In haptic application, these singularities deteriorate the force reflecting performance. Moreover, different from general manipulators, haptic systems can't avoid the singular point, because they are operated by the user's random motion command. Although many singularity-free load distribution algorithms for kinematically redundant manipulators have been proposed, singularity-free load distribution algorithms for parallel haptic application have not been deeply discussed. In this paper, various singularity-free load distribution algorithms that are appropriate to parallel haptic system will be discussed. A new 6 DOF parallel mechanism equipped with four sub-chains is employed as a test device. To cope with singularity problem, four task-priority algorithms and redundant actuation algorithm are discussed and compared through simulation, and also experiments have been performed to show the effectiveness of those algorithms at the presence of singularity.

To provide network services consistently under various network failures, enterprise networks increasingly utilize path diversity through multi-homing. As a result, multi-homed non-transit autonomous systems (ASes) become to surpass single-homed networks in number. In this paper, we address an inevitable problem that occurs when networks with multiple entry points deploy stateful inspection firewalls in their borders. In this paper, we formulate this phenomenon into a state-sharing problem among multiple firewalls under asymmetric routing condition. To solve this problem, we propose a stateful inspection protocol that requires very low processing and messaging overhead. Our protocol consists of the following two phases: 1) Generation of a TCP SYN cookie marked with the firewall identification number upon a SYN packet arrival, and 2) State sharing triggered by a SYN/ACK packet arrival in the absence of the trail of its intial SYN packet. We demonstrate that our protocol is scalable, robust, and simple enough to be deployed for high speed networks. It also transparently works under any client-server configurations. Last but not least, we present experimental results through a prototype implementation.

We propose a variational algorithm to jointly estimate the shape, albedo, and light configuration of a Lambertian scene from a collection of images taken from different vantage points. Our work can be thought of as extending classical multi-view stereo to cases where point correspondence cannot be established, or extending classical shape from shading to the case of multiple views with unknown light sources. We show that a first naive formalization of this problem yields algorithms that are numerically unstable, no matter how close the initialization is to the true geometry. We then propose a computational sch.me to overcome this problem, resulting in provably stable algorithms that converge to (local) minima of the cost functional. Although we restrict our attention to Lambertian objects with uniform albedo, extensions of our framework are conceivable.
