MEMS technology can be utilized for the fabrication of magnetic structures in multiple frequency ranges, ranging from low-MHz metal-core devices for DC-DC converters to high-frequency dielec.ric or air core devices for RF application. They can also be fabricated in multiple locations: integral with silicon chips;in the interconnect layer between chip and board;and directly on the printed wiring board, in order to yield ultracompact magnetic microsystems. This paper describes examples of each of these fabrication approaches: high frequency dielec.ric-core inductors for CMOS power amplifiers integrated on-chip;high-frequency air-core inductors fabricated within the interconnect layer between chip and board;and low-frequency metal-core inductors for DC-DC power conversion.

In this paper, we propose the use of vertical-Bell Labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) detection for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing code division multiplexing (OFDM-CDM) systems. Considering the properties of the V-BLAST detection as well as the frequency diversity from CDM, we propose a new CDM transform matrix to improve the performance of V-BLAST detection of OFDM-CDM signals. The V-BLAST detection of OFDM-CDM signals is also applied in multiple antenna systems. Simulation results show that we can achieve significant performance improvement using the V-BLAST detection sch.me and the proposed CDM transform matrix for OFDM-CDM systems.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is an efficient tool for visualizing high-dimensional data. In this paper, an intuitive and effective SOM projection method is proposed for mapping high-dimensional data onto the two-dimensional SOM structure with a growing self-organizing map. In the learning phase, a growing SOM is trained and the growing cell structure is used as the baseline framework. After the learning phase, the new projection method is used to map the input vector so that the input data is mapped to the structure of the SOM without having to plot the weight values, resulting in easy visualization of the data. The projection method is demonstrated on two data sets with promising results and a significantly reduced network size.

Here we report the first study towards the integration of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes (CNT) in the gate stack of CMOS technology, which is a promising hybrid approach of top-down and bottom-up fabrication process. Prospective processes for C60 and CNT deposition over an aggressively scaled 2 nm gate oxide in the MOS capacitor structure have been monitored. CV measurements show minimal silicon contamination and interface states. Step charging at a specific voltage that corresponds to a fixed number density of C60 is used to establish the structural integrity and size-mono-dispersion of C60. The CV method can be further used to probe the charge injection into C60 and its anions to establish fundamental understanding of their molecular orbital (MO) structure.

A print quality (PQ) test page is a diagnostic tool which is designed for accurate and efficient diagnosis of PQ defects. We develop a set of test pages for the user to check the condition of his or her printer without using any other tools. We design test features which clearly reveal the common PQ defects that occur with color laser printers, such as failure of color plane registration, ghosting, and repetitive artifacts. We then incorporate the test features into, a set of test pages for a specific printer model. We introduce the concept of imperfections within specification which are PQ defects that fall within the PQ specification of the printer. The PQ test pages should be designed not to reveal such defects to the customer. For the constant tone fields on the test page, we consider the specific case of designing halftone patterns that will not show banding that is within specification. Finally, we describe the design of a set of instruction pages that walk the customer through the process of identifying PQ defects shown on the test pages, that can be remedied by customer-replaceable parts.

In this paper, a two-stage adaptive minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector for synchronous DS-CDMA system is considered in a Rayleigh fading channel. The near-far effect causes performance degradation of a DS-CDMA system. To improve performance of the adaptive MMSE detector in a near-far environment, a near-far resistant decorrelating decision-feedback detector (DDFD) is combined with the adaptive MMSE detector in which a normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm is utilized as an adaptive algorithm. The performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated by simulation and compared with that of other suboptimum multiuser detectors. Through the numerical results, it is shown that the proposed receiver achieves significant performance improvement at the expense of a modest increase in computational complexity.

This paper proposes a novel method to estimate the position of suspended body that hovers due to the elec.romagnetic force. The position information of the suspended body can be extracted from the coil currents, which contain the high frequency components due to the injected high frequency voltage without any additional hardware. The control of coil currents and the position of suspended body is performed with the digital controller using DSP. The effectiveness of the position estimation and control strategy without displacement sensors has been verified by simulation and experimental results.

This paper systematically investigates the hot carrier (HC) and soft-breakdown (SBD) induced performance degradations in CMOS voltage-controlled oscillators. After the MOSFET device RF parameter degradations due to HC and SBD effects are experimentally evaluated, the HC and SBD induced performance degradations of a differential 5-stage ring oscillator and a cross-coupled LC oscillator are evaluated for the first time for 0.16 μm technology, focusing on phase noise. Two design techniques are proposed to improve the oscillator performance. The SpectraRF and BERT simulation results verified the effectiveness of the proposed design techniques.

In this paper, we design a proportional-period controller for allocating CPU to real rate multimedia applications on a general-purpose computer system. We model this computer system problem in state space form. We design a predictive controller to allocate the proportion of the CPU to the threads when the long-term time deviation from the current time stamp is small or positive. When it is negative and exceeds a certain threshold, we switch to a controller designed using dynamic optimization LQR tracking techniques, to drive the error (short-term and long-term time deviations) to a small value. The challenges in the problem include the coarse granularity (quantization) of the time-stamp markings of the video frames, the unpredictable decoding completion time of the frames, the variable decoding times of the frames, and control actuation being limited to positive values.
