This paper presents performance analysis of a smart antenna base station (SABS) that has been implemented for IS-2000 1X system. The SABS introduced in this paper includes all the subsystems required in a commercial base station such as array antenna elements, RF unit, channel card, beamforming unit, GPS unit, etc. The channel card contains subsystems for generating the transmitting data, retrieving the received data, and controlling the transmitting and receiving parts. The data retrieval module, which performs the despreading function, has been realized on an FPGA board in accordance with the array structure and adaptive beamforming procedure of the proposed SABS. In order to provide a proper downlink beamforming as well as uplink beamforming, we present a novel procedure for a practically usable accurate calibration. The performance analysis of the proposed SABS presented in this paper is based on experimental results provided by the commercial mobile terminals in PCS (Personal Communication Service) frequency band.

It is shown that the high p-type conductivity in GaN:Mg, grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition followed by post-growth annealing, is due to non-equilibrium acceptor concentrations. A series of samples cut from a single GaN:Mg wafer, which initially had undergone rapid thermal annealing (RTA) after growth, has been investigated. The samples were annealed at various temperatures in nitrogen ambient for over 12 hours, and temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were performed. For samples annealed at temperatures higher than 850C, the hole concentrations decrease by at least an order of magnitude, compared with the original sample. This behavior is explained by an Mg acceptor concentration in excess of its equilibrium solubility limit in the original sample;thus, at high enough temperatures, in the absence of hydrogen, Mg acceptors diffuse either to form elec.rically inactive precipitates or are eliminated. It is worth noting that the acceptor activation energy remains the same for all samples.

In this paper, a hybrid neural network capable of incremental learning and classification of patterns with missing features is proposed. Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) is employed as the constituting network for pattern classification while a number of Fuzzy c-Means (FCM) clustering algorithms are used for undertaking the incomplete data problem. To handle training samples with missing features, FAM is first trained with complete samples. Training samples containing missing features are then presented, and the missing values are estimated and replaced by using two FCM-based algorithms. After that, network training is conducted again with all the complete and estimated samples. To handle test samples with missing features, a non-substitution FCM-based approach is employed to yield a predicted output rapidly. A real medical database is used to evaluate, empirically, the performance of the hybrid FAM-FCM network. The results are analysed, discussed, and quantified statistically with the bootstrap method.

Temporary bonding is necessary for the two-stage transfer of thin films from one substrate to another while preserving the original orientation of the film. The process developed in this study uses an SU-8 photo-polymer both as a bonding material and as a delamination material for layer transfer. SU-8 was spun onto an optically transparent handle wafer (e.g., quartz or glass) and then bonded to the layer to be transferred. The processing parameters such as pre-baking temperature and UV exposure dose affect the bonding strength. UV curing of the SU-8 through the backside of the handle wafer could be performed to obtain the ultimate bond strength at low temperatures. A laser pulse from a KrF excimer laser (λ = 248 nm and τ = 38 ns) at a fluence of 50-150 mJ/cm2 was used to delaminate the SU-8 bonding layer to complete the layer transfer.

A novel rapid acquisition algorithm, called Sequential Block Search, is proposed for impulse radio systems, which can reduce the mean acquisition time considerably. The algorithm is compared to the conventional serial search algorithm and output statistics for both algorithms are derived for a binary phase-shift keyed random time hopping impulse radio system. The mean acquisition time formulas are obtained using the signal flow graph approach. The simulations indicate the superiority of the rapid acquisition algorithm over the serial search technique with a modest increase in the complexity.

A novel maximal figure-of-merit (MFoM) learning approach to text categorization is proposed. Different from the conventional techniques, the proposed MFoM method attempts to integrate any performance metric of interest (e.g. accuracy, recall, precision, or F1 measure) into the design of any classifier. The corresponding classifier parameters are learned by optimizing an overall objective function of interest. To solve this highly nonlinear optimization problem, we use a generalized probabilistic descent algorithm. The MFoM learning framework is evaluated on the Reuters-21578 task with LSI-based feature extraction and a binary tree classifier. Experimental results indicate that the MFoM classifier gives improved F1 and enhanced robustness over the conventional one. It also outperforms the popular SVM method in micro-averaging F1. Other extensions to design discriminative multiple-category MFoM classifiers for application scenarios with new performance metrics could be envisioned too.

Java language and technology are almost inescapable elements of both CS and IT programs. One of Java's more advanced features, language-level support for concurrency in the form of explicit multithreading, is important to both CS and IT students, but for different reasons. Teaching Java concurrency to CS and IT students, therefore, presents different challenges and requires emphasizing the topic in different ways. We discuss these issues, and present our experiences from CS and IT classes taught recently, in which Java concurrency was a topic.
