Most of conventional anti-sway control systems focus on control sch.mes with a vision system. Because it has many drawbacks such as difficult maintenance and high cost, a new vision -sensorless anti-sway control system for container cranes is proposed in this paper. The proposed system includes a multivariable state feedback anti-sway controller with an integrator, a sway velocity observer, and a sway angle detection method in which an inclinometer is used instead of the vision system. While conventional researches have used a simple pendulum model (single wire rope), the hoist wire rope structure of a real container crane is considered and the motion of the head block (spreader) is analyzed. An elaborate pilot crane is constructed to verify the performance of the proposed system. It is a 1/4-scaled model of a real Rail Mounted Quayside Crane. The feasibility and the performance of the proposed system are synthetically verified on the pilot crane. Also, experiments are carried out on the real container crane (Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane) in the commercial site to verify the performance of the proposed control system.

Stabilization problems of linear systems with right invertible constraints have mostly been solved for both global and semi-global frameworks. Linear systems subject to non-right invertible constraints have completely different characteristics compared to those with right invertible constraints. This paper addresses the control problems of linear systems subject to non-right invertible constraints. This paper also expands further the available taxonomy of constraints. The new categorizations of constraints introduced reveal the difficulty in semi-global oriented control design for the non-right invertible constraints. Some new notions of stabilization are also introduced.

In this paper, a new nonlinear programming approach is suggested to solve biaffine matrix inequality (BMI) problems in multiobjective and structured controls. It is shown that these BMI problems are reduced to nonlinear minimization problems. An algorithm that is easily implemented with existing convex optimization codes is presented for the nonlinear minimization problem. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by numerical examples.

This paper examines the various actors that contribute to the success of minority students in engineering programs by exploring past and current paradigms promoting success and analyzing models for advancing the participation of members of these populations. Included is a literature review of articles, government reports, Web sites, and archives published since 1980. Student success is correlated to several indicators, including pre-college preparation, recruitment programs, admissions policies, financial assistance, academic intervention programs, and graduate sch.ol preparation and admission. This review suggests that the problem of minority underrepresentation and success in engineering is soluble given the appropriate resources and collective national "will" to propagate effective approaches.

The reliability of Cu dual-damascene interconnect trees with 3-terminal (dotted-I), 4-terminal ('T') and 5-terminal ('+') configurations has been investigated. The lifetime of multi-terminal interconnect trees with the same current density through the common middle via was determined to be independent of the number of segments connected at the common junction. Furthermore, our experimental results on dotted-I test structures showed an increase in the reliability of the interconnect tree when the distribution of a same current was not equal in the two connected segments, especially for the cases where one of the segments was acting as a passive reservoir or active source of Cu atoms for the adjoining segment. Due to the low barrier for void nucleation at the Cu/Si3N4 interface, the presence of any small atomic source in neighboring segments with enhance the reliability of a connected segment in which Cu atoms are being drained away. As a consequence, failure can occur in a tree segment which is stressed at significantly lower current densities than more highly stressed adjoining segments.

In recent years, pipeline construction of shallowly buried flexible pipes is increasing. This is due to the cost of general pipeline construction with deep excavation, having depth of cover of about 1.5-2.0 times of the pipe diameter. However, buried pipeline with a shallow depth of cover has a risk of large deformation caused by traffic loads. This paper presents the behavior of buried flexible pipe with shallow depth of cover under traffic live load analyzed by D.E.M.(Distinct Element Method analysis). As a result, it was found that the behavior of a shallowly buried pipe under traffic live load can not be evaluated by the current design according to Spangler's assumption.

A novel elastic image registration approach is proposed, which can register both 2D medical images and gel elec.rophoresis automatically and accurately. Firstly, the global affine registration method based on image intensity is used to initialise a starting estimation of the robust registration algorithm. Then, by using iterative landmark based algorithm, the affine registration results are registered to further improve the accuracy in the second step, in which, the novel automatic landmark localization method is introduced and the thin-plate spline is used to refine the registration precision. An important Quality-of-Service (QoS) issue in wireless multimedia networks is how to control handoff drops. In this paper, we propose admission control algorithms that adaptively control the admission threshold in each cell, in order to keep the handoff dropping probability below a pre-defined level. The admission threshold is dynamically adjusted based on handoff dropping events. We first present a simple admission control sch.me which brings out an important performance evaluation criterion - inter-cell fairness - and serves as a reference point. We then investigate the inter-cell unfairness problem and develop two enhanced sch.mes to overcome this problem. The performance of these protocols is benchmarked and compared with other competitive sch.mes. The results indicate that our sch.mes perform very well while, in addition, achieving significantly reduced complexity and signaling load.
