Power amplifiers (PAs) are inherently nonlinear devices and are used in virtually all communications systems. Digital baseband predistortion is a highly cost effective way to linearize PAs, but most existing architectures assume that the PA has a memoryless nonlinearity. For wider bandwidth applications such as WCDMA, PA memory effects can no longer be ignored, and memoryless predistortion has limited effectiveness. In this paper, instead of focusing on a particular PA model and building a corresponding predistorter, we focus directly on the predistorter structure. In particular, we propose a memory polynomial model for the predistorter and implement it using an indirect learning architecture. Linearization performance is demonstrated on. a 3-carrier UMTS signal.

Satellite microwave scatterometer wind retrievals, given in the standard product (e.g., QuikSCAT L2B), badly underestimate the peak wind speed in tropical cyclones. One important reason is that the effects of precipitation on the normalized radar cross section sigma-0 are neglected in the processing algorithms. This paper presents results of a first attempt to provide sigma-0 corrections, which account for the atmospheric attenuation of the rain. Atmospheric transmissivity is derived from the QuikSCAT Radiometer (QRAD) excess brightness temperatures taken simultaneously with sigma-0 measurements. When applied, retrieved wind speeds show improved agreement with numerical hurricane models (PSU/NCAR MM5) where there is moderate to high rainfall.

The majority of screening mammograms are normal. It will be beneficial if a detection system is designed to help radiologists readily identify normal regions of mammograms. In this paper, we will present a binary tree classifier based on the use of global features extracted from different levels of a 2-D Quincunx wavelet decomposition of normal and abnormal regional images. This classifier is then used to classify whether an entire whole-field mammogram is normal. This approach is fundamentally different from other approaches that identify a particular abnormality in that is independent of the particular type of abnormality.

AlN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) were grown on sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Growth temperature, III/V ratio, growth rate, and other growth parameters were optimized for the buffer layer and the MQWs, separately. The growth of AlN buffer was kept as Al-rich as possible while the formation of Al droplets was avoided. A GaN buffer layer was also tried but proved to be inferior to AlN buffer probably due to its larger surface roughness, higher dislocation density, and larger lattice mismatch with the AlN barrier layers in the MQWs. Very flat surfaces with a RMS roughness of 0.7nm were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) on the samples with both AlN buffer layer and 20 MQWs deposited under the optimized growth conditions. Abrupt interfaces and excellent periodicities of the MQWs were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and reflectivity measurements with MQWs' satellite peaks clearly visible up to the 10th order. Room-temperature intense ultraviolet (UV) photoluminescence (PL) emission with wavelength in the range of 320-350nm was also observed from the MQWs with well width ranging from 1 .0 to 1 .5nm. These MQW structures can potentially be used for UV light emitters and quantum cascade lasers.

The study of solar and convective drying of vegetable product was performed in order to determine the performance of the system that got energy from solar energy and steam. And also, the financial analysis, advantages and disadvantages of the system are described. Results from collector testing between 8.30 a.m. - 5.30 p.m. with the average global solar radiation was 650.0 W/m2, air flow rate was 0.68 kg/s, average ambient air temperature was 35.0°C , showed that the average efficiency of solar collector was about 46.0 %. Experimental results showed that the efficiency of drying system was between 27.5 - 58.5% depending on type and quantity of the fresh product. And the final moisture content of product was between 10-15% whereas the initial moisture content was between 60-90%. From the financial analysis, it was found that internal rate of return was 57.8 % and the benefit-cost ratio was 1.17. From this study, it has indicated that the system has many advantages, however it also has some disadvantage that should be improved in the aspect of auxiliary heat in order to save more energy.

Diamond films were implanted with Au or O ions at multiple energies in order to produce a uniform region of C vacancies. Analysis of the implanted films by Raman spectroscopy has shown that the proportion of non-diamond or amorphous carbon increased with dose (5 × 1013 - 5 × 1015 ions/cm2). For implantation with Au ions, a complete amorphisation near to the surface was evident at a dose of 5 × 10 15 ions/cm2. We have examined the ion beam etch (IBE) rate of the films as a function of the implant species and dose. The etching experiments were performed using either Ar or Ar/O2 gases at a bias energy of 500-1,000 eV. In Ar gas, the process of sputter etching has produced a similar increase in etch rate with dose for both the Au and O implants. In Ar/ O2 gases, the process of ion-enhanced chemical etching produced greater etch rates than obtained in Ar gas with higher rates for the Au than the O implants.

It has been proved that it is possible to guarantee delay bounds in a Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) server when traffic is regulated by the Leaky Bucket algorithm. However, the Leaky Bucket is not an appropriate regulator for long-range dependent (LRD) traffic. This paper introduces the computation of backlog and delay bounds for a GPS server under LRD traffic. Traffic is assumed to be regulated by the Fractal Leaky Bucket, which is proved to be an effective policing mechanism for LRD traffic.

In ad hoc networks, each node utilizes its limited resources to carry out the collective operation of the network. It is not always in the best interests of the network's nodes to demand the continuous participation of all nodes in the network operations. In this work, we propose an Energy Dependent Participation (EDP) sch.me, where a node periodically re-evaluates its participation in the network based on the residual energy in its battery. More importantly, a node gives special consideration to supporting the communication needs of its active network applications and preventing further network partitioning. EDP's localized partition checking algorithm is particularly well suited for the Zone Routing Protocol, where the link-state information is proactively maintained within each node's local zone and routes to faraway nodes are reactively obtained via global queries. Through simulations, we evaluate the impact of our proposed sch.me on battery life and network connectivity. Our results suggest that the EDP sch.me can increase the usable lifetime of a battery-constraint ad hoc network by over 50%.

We developed the remote boiler control system based on internet to enhance the flexibility with minimum change of the structure of the conventional boiler system. Hello Device 1300 is applied to the system as a web server between ethernet and the boiler system manufactured by Kiturami Boiler Co., which is accessible from the HD 1300 via RS0232 serial terminal. The developed control system is operated on client program based on Java Applet independently from OS. Some experimental result shows the reliability and flexibility of the proposed system.
