It is a compelling challenge to provide inner-urban K-12 students with the skills necessary for a career in engineering. A solid grounding in mathematics is the most valuable such skill and also the most difficult to develop. Many inner-urban programs meant to revitalize or strengthen mathematics education focus on students in middle or high sch.ol. At this grade level, many students already feel they have no skill with mathematics;they have a correspondingly poor attitude towards mathematics that makes any attempt to improve the mathematics curriculum more difficult. A more useful, if longer term, approach is to implement change from the bottom (elementary sch.ol level) up, rather than middle or high sch.ol, where ultimate change is so strongly desired. The authors have introduced a supplemental program in the Pontiac sch.ol District in Pontiac, Michigan to revitalize mathematics beginning with the elementary sch.ol level (K-5). The supplemental program, Kumon Mathematics, is used by millions of sch.ol children in Singapore, Japan, and Korea;countries that score the highest on worldwide mathematics achievement tests. Kumon Mathematics appears to provide an ideal structured support in mathematics for at-risk children who receive little or no help at home, and who present the teacher of any given grade with a great variety of achievement levels. It allows students to achieve frequent and repeated successes. This paper provides details of the Kumon Mathematics methodology as well as a description of the first year's efforts in the program, which currently involves some 1,500 elementary sch.ol children in the Pontiac sch.ol District.

This paper presents the simulation works done by using Sonnet EM™ on high-aspect-ratio 3D on chip solenoid inductor. In order to discover the dependence of inductor performance on different dielectric materials covering the substrate, via heights, via separation distances, conductor dimensions, a variety of designs have been demonstrated and their behaviors under different circumstances have been characterized. In conclusion, we found that high-aspect-ratio 3D solenoid inductors provide better RF performance than previously fabricated low-aspect-ratio 3D solenoid and dome-shape spiral inductors.

Plasma polymerized organic thin films were deposited on Si(100) glass and metal substrates using thiophene and ethylcyclohexane precursors by PECVD method. In order to compare electrochemical properties of the as-grown thin films, the effects of the RF plasma power in the range of 30-100 W. AFM showed that the polymer films with smooth surface and sharp interface could be grown under various deposition conditions. Impedance analyzer was utilized for the determination of I-V curve for leakage current density and C-V for dielectric constants, respectively. To obtain C-V curve, we used a MIM structure of metal(Al)-insulator(plasma polymerized thin film)-metal(Pt) structure. Al as the electrode was evaporated on the thiophene films that grew on Pt coated silicon substrates, and the dielectric constants of the as-grown films were then calculated from C-V data measured at 1MHz. From the electrical property measurements such as I-V and C-V characteristics, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current of thiophene thin films were obtained to be about 3.22 and 1 × 10-11 A/cm2. However, in case of ethylcyclohexane thin films, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current were obtained to be about 3.11 and 5 × 10-12 A/cm2.

The CPW based spiral-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) is used in MMIC for the first time to reduce the phase noise in V-band MMIC oscillator. The parallel equivalent L-C components resulted from the defects on the both ground planes in CPW produce a band rejection property. Hence the spiral-shaped DGS can be employed at the gate circuit of the series feedback oscillator to improve quality factor of the oscillator. A V-band CPW MMIC oscillator incorporated with this DGS resonator was designed, fabricated and measured. To demonstrate the effect of the spiral-shaped DGS on phase noise, another oscillator with only conventional open stub CPW line was also tested. The phase noise performance of the oscillator with spiral-shaped DGS is improved by 8 dB compared to that of the oscillator without DGS.

An advanced manufacturing program and laboratories can help the third world countries to standardize their products and use mass production for being able to compete in the highly competitive international market. It will be a great help to the industrial companies of these countries if the educational institutions educate and train their graduates for being employed by these companies. The state-of-the-art computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), computer Aided Design (CAD), computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Robotics laboratories should be considered for this educational goal. These labs will significantly improve the quality and capacity of educational programs 6 by providing excellent teaching aids and hands-on experience to educate students in the theory and application of computer integrated manufacturing technology. A new advanced manufacturing curriculum can be designed that includes robotics and advanced manufacturing related courses and labs to provide meaningful hands-on activities. All students in this program will receive enhanced training and experience utilizing multimedia software and workbooks specifically tailored for this program. Also local industry expertise can use these labs to demonstrate the potential industrial use of CIM and related labs to increase productivity, accuracy and safety. As a result, the Industrial Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing program graduates can satisfy the growing need for robotics and real-time programming expertise in industries and government agencies and will significantly improve the future of undergraduate education 1, 2, 3. In this paper, we describe a new state-of-the-art computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) lab which plays the key role and has been established in our sch.ol to support our future Industrial Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing program. This lab can be used as a model by other sch.ols intending to offer a similar program.

Hierarchical graphs are an important class of graphs for modeling many real applications in software and information visualization. In this paper, we investigate area requirements for drawing hierarchically planar graphs regarding two different drawing standards. Firstly, we show an exponential lower bound for the area needed for straight-line drawing of hierarchically planar graphs. The lower bound holds even for s-t hierarchical graphs without transitive arcs, in contrast to the results for upward planar drawing. This motivates our investigation of another drawing standard grid visibility representation, as a relaxation of straight-line drawing. An application of the existing results from upward drawing can guarantee a quadric drawing area for grid visibility representation but does not necessarily guarantee the minimum drawing area. Motivated by this, we will present a new grid visibility drawing algorithm which is efficient and guarantees the minimum drawing area with respect to a given topological embedding. This implies that the area minimization problem is polynomial time solvable restricted to the class of graphs whose planar embeddings are unique. However, we can show that the problem of area minimization of grid visibility for hierarchically planar graphs is generally NP-hard, even restricted to s-t graphs. © 2002 Elsevier science B.V. Machine Learning has traditionally been a topic of research and instruction in computer science and computer engineering programs. Yet, due to its wide applicability in a variety of fields, its research use has expanded in other disciplines, such as electrical engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. Currently, many undergraduate and first-year graduate students in the aforementioned fields do not have exposure to recent research trends in Machine Learning. This paper reports on a project in progress, funded by the National science Foundation under the program Combined Research and Curriculum Development (CRCD), whose goal is to remedy this shortcoming. The project involves the development of a model for the integration of Machine Learning into the undergraduate curriculum of those engineering and science disciplines mentioned above. The goal is increased exposure to Machine Learning technology for a wider range of students in science and engineering than is currently available. Our approach of integrating Machine Learning research into the curriculum involves two components. The first component is the incorporation of Machine Learning modules into the first two years of the curriculum with the goal of sparking student interest in the field. The second is the development of new upper level Machine Learning courses for advanced undergraduate students. The paper will describe the first phase of the project, that of the integration of Machine Learning concepts into introductory engineering and science programming courses through appropriately designed programming projects.

The problem of how to design a survivable optical network under single and multiple link failures has been studied quite extensively;however, there are few studies on the design of optical networks that could survive single node failures. We design a dynamic wavelength routing sch.me that will set up a primary path as well as a node-disjoint shared protection path for each connection using as few wavelength channels as possible by allowing multiple protection paths to share wavelength channels. Sharing full link state information among all network nodes will incur heavy processing overhead and increase routing traffic significantly. We propose a novel sch.me that uses three vectors to convey incomplete information of link state. The sch.me can be implemented by extending the OSPF protocol. As it is important to network service provider, we also compare the capacity requirement between link failure protection sch.me and node failure protection sch.me.

Finite element method has, in recent years, been widely used as a powerful tool in analysis of engineering problems. In this numerical analysis, the behavior of the actual material is approximated with that of an idealized material that deforms in accordance with some constitutive relationships. Therefore, the choice of an appropriate constitutive model, which adequately describes the behavior of the material, plays a significant role in the accuracy and reliability of the numerical predictions. Several constitutive models have been developed for various materials. Most of these models involve determination of material parameters, many of which have no physical meaning [1, 2]. In this paper a neural network-based finite element analysis will be presented for modeling engineering problems. The methodology involves incorporation of neural network in a finite element program as a substitute to conventional constitutive material model. Capabilities of the presented methodology will be illustrated by application to practical engineering problems. The results of the analyses will be compared to those obtained from conventional constitutive models.
