The aim of this paper is to study the computational power of the qualitative model, where entities are given distinct labels which are however mutually incomparable;this model is opposed to the quantitative model, where labels are integers. The qualitative model captures, for example, the case when the labels are written in different alphabets (e.g., Cyrillic, Latin) and there is no a priori agreement on a common encoding. We investigate the qualitative model through the problem of leader election in a distributed mobile environment. All known leader election protocols assume that the initial input values are distinct and pairwise comparable. While distinctness of the input values is clearly required, the comparability assumption is questionable. Our concern is whether it is possible to remove this comparability assumption. To focus solely on this concern, we consider the problem in its weakest setting: anonymous highly symmetric networks (i.e., Cayley graphs). In this way, to break the symmetry (and thus elect a leader) among the incomparable mobile agents, we can not rely on the existence of distinguished node labels nor on any topological asymmetry of the network. We describe a generic election protocol which is effective for all anonymous Cayley graphs;i.e., it solves the election problem if the problem is solvable, otherwise it determines that the problem is not solvable. For arbitrary networks, our protocol is conditionally effective;that is, it performs election of one agent among any set of agents in any network, under some weak conditions on the network and on the initial positions of the agents. Our work is a first step toward a better understanding of the inherent differences between "quantitative computing" where parameters are taken from a total order, and "qualitative computing" where parameters are taken from a partial order.

Grids have been established as a new paradigm for delivering information, resources and services to users. OGSA integrates Web service and grid technology to provide grid service that is the abstract of resources. On service grid environment, location transparency of services is a key concept. So, new challenges have arisen in service sch.duling. We put forward here a sch.duling system to sch.dule decentralized grid services based on QoS. It cooperates with service container to sch.dule services by sch.duling strategy. Both the architecture and the strategy it used are described.

This paper evaluates a perceptual impairment measure for ringing artifacts, which are common in hybrid MC/DPCM/DCT coded video, as a predictor of the mean opinion score (MOS) obtained in the standard subjective assessment. The perceptual ringing artifacts measure is based on a vision model and a ringing distortion region segmentation algorithm, which is converted into a new perceptual ringing distortion metric (PRDM) on a scale of 0 to 5. This scale corresponds to a modified double-stimulus impairment scale variant II (DSIS-II) method. The Pearson correlation, the Spearman rank order correlation and the average absolute error are used to evaluate the performance of the PRDM compared with the subjective test data. The results show a strong correlation between the PRDM and the MOS with respect to ringing artifacts.

Networks of perceptrons provide simple and elegant solutions for many classes of Boolean functions, including addition. That is why, a large number of solutions have been proposed for the addition of two binary numbers. Such solutions have been optimized with respect to several cost functions like: depth, size, fan-ins, weights, and thresholds. In this paper it is also reviewed that constructive solutions for the addition of two binary numbers, and subsequently introduce a novel optimal hybrid structure for threshold logic practical adders (i.e., adders having from 16- to 128-bit inputs). Quantitative comparison of the new structure with the latest solutions in terms of depth, size, weights, thresholds, fan-in, as well as fan-out, is presented for a particular case.

We proposed a watermarking for 3D polygonal meshes using normal vector distribution of each patch. The distribution of norm vector for 3D polygonal mesh is a consistent factor to be robust against various attacks such as af£ne transform and mesh connectivity altering. Therefore, the proposed algorithm embedded watermark into these consistent normal vectors and equal watermark bit was embedded into each patch of subdivided mesh to have robustness against the partial geometric deformation. Experiment results exhibited the proposed algorithm is robust by extracting watermark bit for various attacked models.

We examine the set covering machine when it uses data-dependent half-spaces for its set of features and bound its generalization error in terms of the number of training errors and the number of half-spaces it achieves on the training data. We show that it provides a favorable alternative to data-dependent balls on some natural data sets. Compared to the support vector machine, the set covering machine with data-dependent half-spaces produces substantially sparser classifiers with comparable (and sometimes better) generalization. Furthermore, we show that our bound on the generalization error provides an effective guide for model selection.

A bi-directional and multi-channel wireless telemetry capsule, 11 mm in diameter, is presented that can transmit video images from inside the human body and receive a control signal from an external control unit. The proposed telemetry capsule includes transmitting and receiving antennas, a demodulator, decoder, four LEDs, and CMOS image sensor, along with their driving circuits. The receiver demodulates the received signal radiated from the external control unit. Next, the decoder receives the stream of control signals and interprets five of the binary digits as an address code. Thereafter, the remaining signal is interpreted as four bits of binary data. Consequently, the proposed telemetry module can demodulate external signals so as to control the behavior of the camera and four LEDs during the transmission of video images. The proposed telemetry capsule can simultaneously transmit a video signal and receive a control signal determining the behavior of the capsule itself. As a result, the total power consumption of the telemetry capsule can be reduced by turning off the camera power during dead time and separately controlling the LEDs for proper illumination of the intestine.

The incorporation of patterned and solid ground planes into standard SOI substrates and their effect on cross-talk and inductance is discussed. WSi 2, deposited on the handle substrate by LPCVD and having a resistivity of 2Ω/sq. is employed as the ground plane. Deposition and subsequent CMP of a thick polysilicon layer allows successful bonding to an oxidised silicon active substrate. Cross-talk test structures fabricated on 2μm Ground-Plane SOI show a 30dB improvement over a control SOI substrate at 1GHz. Top-down contact to the ground plane is made via a WSi2 lined polysilicon refilled trench. The WSi2 layer can also be incorporated into a faraday cage structure creating a WSi2 cage around device structures. These structures exhibit a 70dB improvement over SOI at 1GHz. Introduction of the solid ground plane reduces inductor quality factor by 55%. Selective patterning of the ground plane below inductor structures results in no reduction in the inductor quality factor.

In the conventional isolated half-bridge DC-DC converter, the leakage-inductance-related losses degrade the converter efficiency and limit the increase of the converter switching frequency. A novel active-clamp circuit is proposed to recycle the energy stored in the leakage inductance and thus improves the converter efficiency. By transferring the energy in the leakage inductance to a capacitor, the leakage inductance energy is recycled. Moreover, the proposed active-clamp circuit avoids the body diodes conduction of primary-side switches. Hence the body diodes conduction and reverse-recovery losses are eliminated. The principles of operation and simulation results are presented. The experimental results show the proposed active-clamp circuit improves the efficiency of the half-bridge DC-DC converter.

Stabilization problems of linear systems with right invertible constraints have mostly been solved for both global and semi-global frameworks. Linear systems subject to non-right invertible constraints have completely different characteristics compared to those with right invertible constraints. This paper addresses the control problems of linear systems subject to non-right invertible constraints. This paper also expands further the available taxonomy of constraints. The new categorizations of constraints introduced reveal the difficulty in semi-global oriented control design for the non-right invertible constraints. Some new notions of stabilization are also introduced.
