This paper presents a case study highlighting the best practices for designing and building a web-based auction system using UML (Unified Model Language) and component-based programming. We use the Use Case, Class, Sequence, and Component Diagrams offered by UML for designing the system. This enables new functions to be added and updated easily. Our implementation, with its basis in component-based programming, enabled us to develop a highly maintainable system with a number of reusable components: the Method of Bidding (the bidder can bid at three different frequencies-fast, medium or leisurely), the Certification (Identity verification function), and the Registration Good (Product entry function) Components. Further, the system uses intelligent agents that permit fair help to bidders participating in auctions and at the same time achieve maximum profit for the seller. The design and implementation environment, along with the tools used, provide excellent support for the successful development of the system.

Most systems used for creating and displaying colormap-based visualizations are not photometrically calibrated. That is, the relationship between RGB input levels and perceived luminance is usually not known, due to variations in the monitor, hardware configuration, and the viewing environment. However, the luminance component of perceptually based colormaps should be controlled, due to the central role that luminance plays in our visual processing. We address this problem with a simple and effective method for performing luminance matching on an uncalibrated monitor. The method is akin to the minimally distinct border technique (a previous method of luminance matching used for measuring luminous efficiency), but our method relies on the brain's highly developed ability to distinguish human faces. We present a user study showing that our method produces equivalent results to the minimally distinct border technique, but with significantly improved precision. We demonstrate how results from our luminance matching method can be directly applied to create new univariate colormaps.

Virtual prototyping (VP) is a new simulation-based design solution for complex system's entire life-cycle design based on an integrated product and process development methodology. In order to facility the integrated, collaborative and multi-disciplinary work for integrated product teams, graininess executable system models for the multi-purpose of VP design abstraction need to be developed cost-effectively from the component library. Here, a new hybrid approach is proposed, which apply a top-down design at the conceptual level and a traditional bottom-up design for details respectively. By integrating UML in an up-stream design with the graph theory in down-stream design, both the reconfiguration of systems and reusability of components are enabled. Finally, an example of a simple mechatronics control system is given.

The virtual rate control (VRC) algorithm has been proposed for active queue management (AQM) in TCP networks. This algorithm uses an adaptive rate control instead of queue length control in order to respond quickly to traffic change with high utilization and small loss. By introducing the notion of virtual target rate, the VRC algorithm can maintain an input rate around the target rate, while attempting to regulate the queue length. In this paper, we analyze the stability of the VRC algorithm in a linearized model. From the results of our analysis, we provide a design guideline for the system to remain stable. We show the validity of our analysis and the effectiveness of the VRC algorithm compared to RED, PI, REM and AVQ algorithms through ns-2 simulations.

In the millimeter wave frequencies of the Q-band, radiation losses of flexible circular PTFE rod and tube waveguides are measured with the variations of parameters such as operating frequencies, dielectric areas of guiding cross sections, curvature radii of the bending, and bend profiles of the S- and U-bend. We determine the radiation losses of the flexible waveguides, which current theory is not able to predict in the regime of some small curvature radius, and the lower limits of the curvature radii at which additional losses are not generated. The results can be explained by the concepts of the fractional power flows in the surrounding free space region of the guides.

This paper describes a computerized simulation system for minimally invasive vascular interventions using Virtual-Reality (VR) based technology. A virtual human patient is constructed using the Visible Human Data (VHD). A knowledge-based human vascular network is developed to describe human vascular anatomy with diseased lesions for different interventional applications. A potential field method is applied to model the interaction between the blood vessels and vascular catheterization devices. A haptic interface is integrated with the computer simulation system to provide tactile sensations to the user during the simulated catheterization procedures. The system can be used for physician training and for pre-treatment planning of interventional vascular procedures.

When using TCP over a mobile network, TCP responds to a handoff by invoking a congestion control algorithm, thereby resulting in a degraded end-to-end performance in a mobile network. Furthermore, in Mobile IP handoffs, packets can be lost during movement detection and registration. These packet losses result in long communication pauses, and successive timeouts. Accordingly, to reduce packet losses during handoffs, two sch.mes are proposed, TCP-MD and TCP-R. TCP-MD can detect the movement of a mobile host early on, whereas TCP-R can force the source to freeze data transmission during registration. The proposed sch.mes maintain end-to-end TCP semantics, making it possible to fully interoperate with the existing infrastructure. Only a small change is required in the mobile host, plus the implementation is simple because some Mobile IP messages are used to notify the handoff, eliminating the need for any additional messages. Simulations confirmed that the proposed sch.mes can give an excellent performance in an environment where the mobile host experiences frequent handoffs.

To evolove reactive system specifications, it is necessary to check properties of the specifications, such as satisfiability, stepwise satisfiability and strong satisfiability. We developed a verification method for checking these properties of specifications described in Linear Temporal Logic. The most significant problem of the verification is that it needs huge computational resources. To solve the problem, we introduce an efficient procedure for checking these properties based on a tableau method using combination of Binary Decision Diagrams representing sets of states and coarse graphs representing transitions.

Brinkmate (hisshi in Japanese) is an important notion of accessing to the opponent's King in shogi. This is essentially the same as conventional chess mating problems, where all moves are considered. However, in shogi the problem is much more difficult, as the possibilities for delivering check or threatmate, and the number of defenses are much *** defending side may have 200 or 300 possible defensive moves to consider. Brinkmate search is resolved into an AND/OR-tree search based on the concept of threat sequence proposedby Iida. The cost of brinkmate search is by far more expensive than mating (tsumeshogi) to find a solution. Since not much is known about brinkmate itself or brinkmate search, we first explain it by giving the definition of brinkmate. In an AND/OR tree of brinkmate search, to determine effective branches (i.e., legal moves) at any internal node is often a time-consuming task. This paper proposes a new search algorithm, denoted by SPH, for an AND/OR-tree search. The algorithm is implemented in a shogi-hisshi (Japanese-chess brinkmate-problem) program, and evaluated by testing it on difficult hisshi problems. Moreover, it is enhanced by several methods including a new idea, denoted by TDSS. The experimental results are compared with those of other programs. The program with TDSS shows the best results for solving short-step problems, while the SPH program in general outperforms the other programs in solving long-step problems.

FACS (Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter) is a well-established instrument used for identifying, enumerating, classifying and sorting cells by their physical and optical characteristics. For a miniaturized FACS device, we have developed a disposable plastic microchip which has a hydrodynamic focusing chamber using soft lithography. As the characteristics of the spatially confined sample stream affect sample throughput, detection efficiency and the accuracy of cell sorting, systematic fluid dynamic studies are required. Flow visualization is conducted with a laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and three-dimensional flow structure of the focused sample stream is reconstructed from 2D slices acquired at 1μm intervals in depth. We have observed that the flow structure in the focusing chamber is skewed by unsymmetrical velocity profile arising from trapezoidal cross section of the microchannel. For a quantitative analysis of a microscopic flow structure, Confocal Micro-PIV system has been developed to evaluate the accelerated flow field in the focusing chamber. We propose the method of defining the depth of the measurement volume using a detection pinhole. The trajectories of red blood cells (RBCs) and their interactions with surrounding flow field in the squeezed sample stream are evaluated to find optimal shape of the focusing chamber and fluid manipulation sch.me for stable cell transporting, efficient detection and sorting.
