Oakland University has pioneered a unique approach to capstone design projects. Multidisciplinary student groups invent a new electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical game or toy, design it, and build a working prototype. The prototype is then delivered to an internationally-known toy and game agency. The best of the prototypes are then presented by the agency to major national and international game and toy companies. If the toy or game is selected for production, the possibility exists for significant financial benefit both for the sch.ol and the students. Real world considerations such as creativity, project feasibility, and costs (particularly in mass quantity), all factor into the ultimate student goal, which is to have their project selected by the agents. The burden of devising the projects is largely removed from the professor and copying from earlier projects is virtually impossible. Design of a good game or toy is often much more difficult than it appears - projects invariably knit together the many engineering skills a student has acquired through the course of obtaining a bachelor's degree as well as from the rest of their life experiences. Ultimately, the engineering sch.ol also benefits from these projects through the possibility of substantial publicity, either with local display of student projects, or through press coverage surrounding a successful project picked up by a major international toy company.

The challanges addressed by a universally accessible NETwork-computer for computer Architecture Research and Education -NETCARE, that provides the educators with a Web portal to access computing resources and educational materials was discussed. The underlying network-computing infrastructure used by NETCARE addresses the administrative overhead by providing resource- management mechanisms for a set of execution servers. The NETCARE infrastructure also addresses the tool installation, documentation and maintainance overheads by promoting reusability. NETCARE provides access to unmodified program binaries;hence the tools can be installed without requiring access to their source code or object files.

In computer system design, we distinguish between closed and open systems. A closed system is a system whose behavior is completely deter mined by the state of the system. An open system is a system that interacts with its environment and whose behavior depends on this interaction. The ability of temporal logics to describe an ongoing interaction of a reactive program with its environment makes them particularly appropriate for the specification of open systems. Nevertheless, model-checking algorithms used for the verification of closed systems are not appropriate for the verification of open systems. Correct model checking of open systems should check the system with respect to arbitrary environments and should take into account uncertainty regarding the environment. This is not the case with current model-checking algorithms and tools. In this paper we introduce and examine the problem of model checking of open systems (module checking, for short). We show that while module checking and model checking coincide for the linear-time paradigm, module checking is much harder than model checking for the branching-time paradigm. We prove that the problem of module checking is EXPTIME-complete for specifications in CTL and 2EXPTIME-complete for specifications in CTL*. This bad news is also carried over when we consider the program-complexity of module checking. As good news, we show that for the commonly-used fragment of CTL (universal, possibly, and always possibly properties), current model-checking tools do work correctly, or can be easily adjusted to work correctly, with respect to both closed and open systems. © 2001 Academic Press.

In the summer of 1998, the Erik Jonsson sch.ol of engineering and computer science (the Jonsson sch.ol) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) obtained approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to offer BS and MS degrees in Telecommunications engineering (TE). These are the first TE degree programs in the United States and the BS program received ABET accreditation for classes to begin in the fall of 1999. This paper discusses the need for such a program at UTD from the perspective of industry as well as the academic justification for a separate degree. The implementation of the program as a combination of Electrical engineering and computer science is addressed as well as the tradeoffs necessary in combining these curricula. Many of the issues are similar to the ones addressed in a computer engineering program. However, the resulting tradeoffs are different in the case of a Telecommunications engineering program.

Approximately 20% of people diagnosed with epilepsy cannot be treated effectively. Consequently, there exists a significant need for alternative types of treatment. To aid in the effort of solving this problem, we developed a prototype system to detect changes in neural activity prior to the onset of a seizure. This system can be used as warning device or as part of a large system to terminate seizures in their initial stages via drug administration or nerve stimulation. The detection algorithm used data collected from intracranial electrodes. The waveforms were filtered and amplified to identify single neuron action potentials. The time of occurrence of each action potential for each neuron was then passed to a preprocessor algorithm that summed the data into 50 ms time bins. Sliding windows consisting of 128 bins for each neuron were cross-correlated. The results were summed and the variance of the cross-correlation was used as a measure of global neuron correlation. The algorithm was implemented in a PC board and tested in rats treated with pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) a known seizure inducing drug. The system was 100% effective at detecting seizures approximately 4.6 seconds before seizure onset and had a false positive rate of 0.3%.

Biological entities such as microorganisms are exquisite systems that have many intricate properties and can perform complex functions. We present the use of electrical characterization to examine two properties and functions of the microorganisms within novel micro-systems. One system takes advantage of the charge state of the cells to measure their electrophoretic mobility through micro-pores. The second system measures impedance changes produced by the metabolic activity of cells to determine their viability. Such devices with an electronic signal output can be very useful in producing practical systems for rapid detection and characterization of cells for a wide variety of applications in the food and health industries.

The introduction of remote design/manufacturing laboratories, which serve as the medium in which linked Oakland University engineering students conduct interactive projects with Seaholm High sch.ol engineering technology students, are discussed. The aim of the laboratories is to make students aware of the problems associated with design and manufacturing facilities. The main emphasis of these interactive courses is that individual teams contain members with varying levels of education and experience and each team is responsible for only one part of the assigned project. Two Sun workstations have be installed at the laboratories at Oakland University and Seaholm High sch.ol, to facilitate interactive collaboration between the teams.

In interactive multimedia presentations, users should have the flexibility to decide on various scenarios they want to see. This means that two-way communications should be captured by the conceptual model. An abstract semantic model, the augmented transition network (ATN), is proposed for modeling user interactions in multimedia presentations. In ATNs, each state node allows multiple outgoing arcs to model potential user interactions. At the decision point, the multimedia presentation system can use this information to display selection buttons so users can make their choices. The superiority of modeling user interactions with ATN instead of the Timeline model or the Object Composition Petri Net model is discussed in this paper. Our results show that the ATN is effective for modeling user interactions in a multimedia presentation environment.

The ability to estimate the future performance of a large and complex distributed software system at design time, and iteratively refine these estimates at development time, can significantly reduce overall software cost and risk. This paper investigates component interconnection in client/server systems, in particular the design and performance modeling of component interconnection patterns, which define and encapsulate the way client and server components communicate with each other. We start with UML design models of the component interconnection patterns. These designs are performance annotated using an XML-type notation. The performance-annotated UML design model is mapped to a performance model, which allows us to analyze the performance of the software architecture executing on various system configurations.

This paper proposes a new image coding sch.me, called the stack X-tree coding. It replaces the zero run in the stack-run coding by the X-tree. An X-tree is defined as a spatial hierarchical tree without significant descendants. By taking advantage of the inter-band dependencies, the X-tree can express more efficiently insignificant coefficients in a wavelet image than the zero run. Experimental results have shown that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the stack-run, and is highly competitive with that of SPIHT.
