EXPONENTIAL PARAMETER-ESTIMATION IN THE PRESENCE OF KNOWN COMPONENTS AND NOISE

In the determination of the natural modes of an electromagnetic scatterer, the measured time series will contain desired information, noise, and quite often known transient components introduced by the excitation source or measuring equipment. This paper describes a linearly constrained total least squares (LCTLS)-Prony method for extracting the exponential model parameters from observed transient data. For such problems, the TLS criterion yields better parameter estimates than LS. Moreover, the incorporation of known signal information via constraints leads to even greater improvements in performance. Mathematical connections between LCTLS-Prony and a TLS variation of time series deflation (TSD) are used to derive constraints for higher order excitation poles. Also, we use TSD concepts to derive numerically superior data transformations for LCTLS. Simulation studies involving idealized test data and synthetic scattering response data of a perfectly conducting sphere demonstrate the advantages of the method.

A method of generating edge maps thereby segmenting an image into regions based on the Student t-test is presented. By applying this test to compare the distribution functions of the intensities in the neighborhood of a given pixel, the pixel can be accurately classified as either an edge pixel on the boundary between regions, or as a pixel of a particular type of regions. The results show that using 5/spl times/5 window, this method robustly segments both synthetic and natural images, and maintains this performance in the presence of additive noise.< >

In this paper it is shown that the spatio-temporal signature generated for any input pattern on a topologically ordered feature map using a gated neuronal architecture is invariant over a neighbourhood of the input pattern provided the input patterns lie in the interior of the decision space and the regions of competition created by n-dimensional spatial grating function at any given spatial frequency are open. The spatio-temporal signature in a Gated Neuronal Architecture uniquely represents a collection of disjoint regions in the feature space. For pattern classification the labeling of the set of disjoint regions represented by the spatio-temporal signature is obtained by using Bayes conditional probabilities. Simulation results indicate improved performance.< >

This paper presents an adaptive control sch.me based on a fuzzy logic algorithm and its application to end-effector positioning of flexible-link manipulators. Here, a fuzzy based adaptive controller is considered due to its simplicity and the fact that it does not require expressing the controller in terms of the system parameters, as it is necessary in the case of self-tuning regulators. This controller is based on a functional fuzzy model where the consequents are crisp functions represent controllers designed for different operating regimes. The premise is constituted by the fuzzy subsets corresponding to the process parameters estimated in real time. The effectiveness of this new sch.me is verified on a clamped free beam and a single-line flexible arm instrumented with piezoceramic sensors and actuators. It is shown that robust performance may be achieved in face of large parameter variations.< >

This paper presents a summary of the results of an examination of protocols produced via the integration of concurrency and coherence methods. Additionally locality of reference considerations are added to the integrating mixtures. Variants of a selected integration are simulated and a detailed analysis which clearly describes transactional behaviour within a realistically parametered distributed shared memory (DSM) environment is given. The performance tradeoffs identified through the simulation study should prove useful to designers of database systems in a DSM environment.< >

The stability of the model reference adaptive control system with external disturbance and unmodeling is discussed. Instead of Lyapunov's method, more general results have been acquired for the analysis of hyperstability. It is shown that if only the linear forward block can be made strictly positive real, then the globally asymptotical hyperstability of the error model structure will be guaranteed with no regard to the characteristic of nonlinear feedback block. The original model reference adaptive control system will also be globally asymptotically hyperstable.

A VLSI implementation of a pulse coded winner-take-all network is presented. The pulse coded winner-take-all network uses a single inhibition bus to implement lateral inhibition. One advantage of the pulse coded winner-take-all is that it has a wiring complexity of O(n). This is in contrast with the standard winner-take-all whose wiring complexity is of O(n/sup 2/). The pulse coded version also has the advantage of preserving the relative magnitude of the winning neuron's incoming signals. Experimental results are presented.< >

An integrated system has been developed that allows the surgeon to more accurately place implant components during total knee surgery. A graphic computer displaying 3-D computed tomography (CT) data of the patient's knee is used to perform more informed and accurate preoperative planning. In the operating room, a robot and specially designed fixturing help the surgeon in performing the bone resections as determined in the preoperative plan. Crucial to the accuracy of this system is the rigid immobilization of the involved bones and the robot's ability to determine their exact locations in space. The rationale and an overview of this system are presented as well as a discussion of some of the technical issues that have arisen.< >

The authors describe how a GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) signal shaping network with a controlled response from DC to 25 GHz was designed, fabricated and tested. The network is a post-detection filter for use in a 15 Gbit/s optical fibre transmission system that uses narrow, soliton like pulses. They begin by outlining the design philosophy that defined the target response. This is followed by a brief description of the GaAs technology used to realise the filter. The impact of the parasitics associated with the technology are outlined which leads onto a description of the optimisation method adopted that includes the process parasitics inside the optimisation loop. Simulation results for the GaAs filter are given followed by measured data to illustrate the very tight control over the frequency response possible with MMIC realisations if care is taken during the design.< >
