Feature analysis is always beneficial to the detection of anonymous criminals in digital forensics, including people and activities, where vast amount of features extracted from databases are involved. Not all features extracted are continuous or different, some of them are discrete or have the same value with others. We discovered that using visual analytics to select features for forensic investigations is not only improve the analysis time of selection, but can also deeply and obviously display the slight changes of features and criminals and also the relationship between features and criminals in order to find the target with significant difference with others, and also predict the more active features to be used in the future. Experiments show that visual feature analysis can help to catch the desire results quickly and clearly.

We intend to evaluate and analyze the performance of a rule 'keep right except to pass'. Based on the cellular automaton (CA) model, we quantified the speed, safety gaps, road density (occupied rate) of the vehicles and simulated the overtaking process with MATLAB. We find out that the keep-right-except-to-pass overtaking rule cannot increase the traffic flow effectively, but it can increase the safety of the road to some extent. Then we propose a new role 'slow traffic keep right' to improve the performance of the original overtaking rule.

Data Placement Policy is a key factor to the performance of distributed data-intensive applications. Usually placing massive data sets efficiently can improve user experience of data-intensive scientific applications under large scale distributed environments. In distributed file systems and distributed storage systems, it focused on the number of redundant data to keep data available all the time. In this paper, we improve the performance of applications by making the correlation of pure network performance measurements with the end-to-end data placement performance. By modeling massive data and adjusting network measurement system, a network performance based data placement policy is introduced. Under this policy, we can make the massive data not only more available, but also efficient.

Face classification is a technique used in Biometrics to help distinguish between facial images. However, this technique has been applicable on human face images only. Online virtual worlds such as Second Life, Sims Online, etc. are gaining popularity over the Internet. They require human users to create a digital persona of oneself, known as an "avatar". Several avatars are designed to resemble human users. With crime being reported in virtual worlds, computer-generated avatar faces being created from human faces and human-resembling humanoids being designed, there is a need to distinguish between natural and artificial faces. Our work applies two new face classification techniques on grayscale, facial images of humans and avatars to tell them apart. (1) Uniform Local Directional Pattern (ULDP) utilizes the uniform patterns from Local Directional Pattern (LDP) (2) Wavelet Uniform Local Directional Pattern (WULDP) applies the ULDP technique on the wavelet transform of an image. Extensive experiments conducted on five different face image datasets (Caltech, FERET for human faces and Entropia, Second Life, Evolver for avatar faces) achieve baseline average classification accuracies of 98.55% using ULDP and 89.55% using WULDP respectively.

The New Zealand Electricity Market (NZEM) is a locational marginal price (LMP) market. The market clearing engine, called sch.duling Pricing and Dispatch (SPD), is based on security constrained DC OPF and is formulated as a Linear programming problem (LPP). There are significant differences between how SPD calculates the LMPs at each node and those calculated in many other LMP markets. In the NZEM, the LMP which is the dual variable associated with power balance equality constraint captures all three cost components readily available in the SPD solution. These three components are marginal cost of generation, marginal cost of losses and the marginal cost of network congestion. SPD currently uses a piece-wise linear loss model to capture the losses of each branch. The objective of this paper is to present difference in losses with the number of linear loss segments, and highlight the problems encountered by such models.

With the development of Service-Oriented technologies, the amount of Web services grows rapidly. QoS-Aware Web service recommendation can help service users to design more efficient service-oriented systems. However, existing methods assume the QoS information for service users are all known and accurate, but in real case, there are always many missing QoS values in history records, which increase the difficulty of the missing QoS value prediction. By considering the user-service-time three dimension context information, we study a Temporal QoS-Aware Web Service Recommendation Framework which aims to recommend best candidates to service user's requirements and meanwhile improve the QoS prediction accuracy. We propose to envision such QoS value data as a tensor which is known as multi-way array, and formalize this problem as a tensor factorization model and propose a Tucker decomposition (TD)algorithm which is able to deal with the triadic relations of user-service-time model. However, one major challenge is that how to deal with the dynamic incoming service QoS value data streams. Thus, we introduce the incremental tensor factorization (ITF)method which is (a) scalable, (b) space efficient (it does not need to store the past data). Extensive experiments are conducted based on our real-world QoS dataset collected on Planet-Lab, comprised of service invocation response-time values from 408 users on 5,473 Web services at 240 time periods. Comprehensive empirical studies demonstrate that our approach is faster and more accuracy than other approaches.

During the past few years, there has been a massive explosion of multimedia content such as un-annotated images on the web. Automatic image annotation is an important task for multimedia retrieval. By automatically allocating semantic concepts to un-annotated images, image retrieval can be performed over annotation concepts. In this work, we address the problem of automatic image annotation, namely automatically describing semantic content of image by concept classifier. Traditional approaches mainly consider the link between image and concept, but ignore the link between annotation concepts. We propose a novel Google Semantic link based image Annotation Model (GSAM), which can leverage the associated concept network (ACN) to enhance automatic semantic annotation performance. When several concepts appear in training set with high co-occurrence frequency, our model utilizes Google semantic link to increase the chances of predicting one concept if there is strong visual evidence for others. Additionally, the fusion between Google concept link and local concept link, and semantic links between single-concepts and multi-concepts are employed to improve annotation performance. In order to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach, we conduct experiments on Corel and IAPR datasets. The experimental results show that our approach considering semantic link outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

Wi-Fi and smartphone based location tracking technologies have been widely applied in location based services (LBS). This research is a part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) project required by a large global shopping mall company located in Australia. It aims to develop an effective customer tracking approach for acquiring shopping behavior of customers and providing them better services. Currently, the log data provided by the company only recorded one Wi-Fi connection at a time for one smartphone user. This makes most of the conventional tracking and positioning methods inapplicable. In order to solve this problem, a new approach was developed, which takes advantage of both the cell of origin (CoO) method and the fingerprinting method. Its implementation mainly includes two phases: 1) the cell determination phase, including partitioning of the floors of the shopping mall using a Voronoi diagram and determining a unique cell for each wireless access point (AP), adjusting the cells manually according to the real floor layout, obstructions as well as an on-site observing and calibrating process. An AP-shop/room matching table and other relevant information are stored in a database; and 2) the user location tracking phase, including determination of the cell that the customer locates in according to the detected AP linked with the customer's mobile phone. A back-tracing method is also used to improve the tracking performance. This new approach was tested in a large shopping-mall-like space covering an area of 1000 square meters, containing 8 simulated shops and 11 APs. The results showed a 96% correct detection rate whilst the 4% erroneous detections occurred when a user was near the cell boundaries. This new approach is also easy to implement and integrate with other location tracking systems.

Despite the advent and popularity of low-cost commercial sensors (e.g., Microsoft Kinect), research in 3D vision still primarily focuses on the development of advanced algorithms geared towards high resolution data. This paper presents a comparative performance evaluation of renowned state-of-the-art 3D local surface descriptors for the task of registration of both high and low resolution range image data. The datasets used in these experiments are the renowned high resolution Stanford 3D models dataset and challenging low resolution Washington RGB-D object dataset. Experimental results show that the performance of certain local surface descriptors is significantly affected by low resolution data.
