The Impact of the Web on Auctions: Some Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Considerations

Since the extensive diffusion of the World Wide Web, on-line auctions have proliferated. This paper considers the impact of the Web on auction viability, operation, and diffusion. It does so by considering the impact of the Web on the various players in an auction and classifying types of auctions. The hypothesized impacts are briefly compared with the case of an established auction firm that moved to the Web and the market domain in which it operates. This is then used to contribute to the electronic markets debate and develop some hypotheses about the way in which Web-based markets that use auction mechanisms may evolve. Trust and quality are identified as key attributes of auctions that may result in a "move to the middle" rather than the establishment of purer market mechanisms. The growth of new cybermediaries and a possible extension of the supply chain are also noted.

Surrogate data and differentiation analyses of nonlinearity in normal EEG

The existence of deterministic temporal structure in the ordering of cycles of the electroencephalogram (EEG) has been questioned recently, since period-shuffled surrogates of epileptic EEG have been shown to have the same dynamical complexity (DCx) as the original signals. This study analyzed normal human EEG under eyes-closed, resting conditions (N = 32) from frontal and central sites (μ(DCX) = 1.87, σ = 0.247), which was significantly lower than period-shuffled surrogates (μ(DCX) = 2.08, σ = 0.358), t(31) = -8.12, pX) = 0.541, σ = 0.106) compared to the original signal, t(31) = -40.03, p<0.000. In combination, these findings suggest that the normal EEG at rest is best characterized as a nonlinear signal with significant cycle-to-cycle determinism, but which does not exhibit a chaotic attractor.

Visualisation in the Simulation and Control of Economic Models

Simulation of economic models is frequently used in the investigation of economic policy. Yet one of the problems with simulation is that it can be difficult to appreciate the model properties due to the nature of the simulation process. Stochastic simulation, for example, can produce large quantities of output which can be difficult to comprehend. Further, when math.matically sophisticated techniques such as the use of optimal control and Kalman Filtering are applied to models, the simulation process can become even more complex. Visualisation techniques in model building, simulation, and analysis of simulation output can help reduce the complexity. This is especially the case with interactive simulation. In this paper we investigate the use of visualisation in simulation by examining the application of optimal control techniques to a stochastic forward looking analytic economic model. We also use interactive object oriented simulation software where objects, such as components of models or graphs of outputs, can be visually manipulated to form simulation systems. We find that the use of visualisation can make the investigation of policy analysis issues with such models more comprehensible.

The Use of SI-Algebra in the Design of Sequencer Circuits

One approach to the design of VLSI systems involves the use of asynchronous circuits that communicate by handshaking with each other. The control circuitry generated when following this approach often includes large trees of binary sequencer components. This paper demonstrates that there is scope here for optimization (in order to improve size, speed and energy consumption). Indeed, an industrial-strength silicon compiler has now been modified to take advantage of this fact. The problem that is addressed concerns the design of efficient control circuits that sequence N four-phase handshakes (N > 2). Muller's speed-independent discipline facilitates the design of such circuits. SI-Algebra, a calculus that supports that discipline, is used to specify the problem and to verify (using recursioninduction) various implementations. Simple counting arguments at the gate level establish that optimization using these implementations is worthwhile.

Until recently almost all engineering curricula around the country required students to take one or more courses in structured programming. In order to keep up with the contemporary demands in the work place, a need to use new educational approaches in teaching engineering courses has become essential. In recent years, due to the explosive market of high quality, user friendly, versatile and application-specific software, many programs are in the process of redesigning their requirements within ABET guidelines with regard to programming language and additional applications of specialized problem solving software in individual courses. In this paper, the authors present a study of current requirements and upcoming changes. The issues which prompted the project include inadequate application of traditional computer programming in courses, lack of student interest towards these programming courses, and a difference in attitude of engineering faculty from different degree granting programs. A survey of undergraduate engineering programs around the country is being conducted in order to understand current practices and reflection of future trends. The paper presents the methodology of survey, the profile of the respondents, faculty involvement, and factors influencing their choices of language.

By using the ultraviolet irradiation from a frequency doubled copper vapour laser, in the fluence range used for laser cleaning, the surface chemistry of silica can be modified. Analysis has shown that the surface is dehydroxylated by the UV light changing it from hydrophilic to hydrophobic in nature. The modification of the surface has the effect of reducing the number of particles that adhere to the treated surface by up to 80%, for 0.3 /spl mu/m diameter particles, upon subsequent contamination of the surface.

A composable security property of noninterference is applied to carry out a case study of the security analysis of an information system comprising a number of components. We first adopt a different notation to generalise this property for the enforcement of different security requirements. This modified property is then applied to assess the security of the information system. Finally, useful observations derived from this case study are discussed, which can help to develop cost-effective approaches for the design and evaluation of secure systems.< >

The effective use between these applications of the limited bandwidth at the User-Network Interface (UNI) has raised increasing interest from both end-system and telecommunication networks researchers. This paper addresses the structure of higher layer traffic controls at the end-systems. A session sch.duling priority sch.me is proposed which reflects the user specified service priority and the importance of the minimum quality. A stream level traffic control device ('stream filter') is proposed at the end-system, which may restrain a traffic stream in response to cell level connection status. The interactive mechanism between the session sch.duler and the stream filters has been investigated.< >
