Alignment Work for Urban Accessibility: A Study of How Wheelchair Users Travel in Urban Spaces

Mobility is the key for people with disabilities to have full participation in life. To support their mobility, previous work primarily focused on accessibility as an attribute of the external environment to be evaluated, labeled, visualized, and improved. Relatively less work has looked at how people with disabilities go out and move around in practice and work to achieve mobility. This paper presents a qualitative study of 14 wheelchair users' travel practices in everyday life in China, highlighting urban accessibility as alignment work-the use of an awareness of the conditions along the journey to continuously align and re-Align various resources to ensure accessibility and mobility across contexts and moments. By highlighting alignment work, we present another side of the story of urban accessibility, and broaden design considerations to support mobility for wheelchair users. © 2022 ACM.

With an emphasis on the cognitive and emotional effects of e-learning platforms, this study fills a research gap concerning user experience studies. The study suggests a nonintrusive technique to evaluate the psychological impacts of e-learning platforms by considering feedback data of users in the form of videos and analyzes emotions from video and decides the user feedback level. This process automates the understanding of feedback in a short amount of time for anyone, without requiring specific knowledge of the system. Feedback analysis for E-Learning platforms using deep learning methods for facial expression analysis is proposed in this work. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a category of deep learning, has become increasingly popular for its ability to precisely analyze and comprehend emotions from facial photos. These models may efficiently learn and extract essential features by being trained on large datasets of tagged facial expression photos. This application takes video feedback as input for various E-learning platforms and analyzes emotions and displays the predicted emotions on video. A publicly accessible dataset is used to test the proposed technique, and the results show that it achieves 90.3% accuracy. This indicates that the approach is highly effective in accurately recognizing facial emotions. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising approach for preserving data privacy in recommendation systems by training models locally. Recently, Graph Neural Networks (GNN) have gained popularity in recommendation tasks due to their ability to capture high-order interactions between users and items. However, privacy concerns prevent the global sharing of the entire user-item graph. To address this limitation, some methods create pseudo-interacted items or users in the graph to compensate for missing information for each client. Unfortunately, these methods introduce random noise and raise privacy concerns. In this paper, we propose FedRKG, a novel federated recommendation system, where a global knowledge graph (KG) is constructed and maintained on the server using publicly available item information, enabling higher-order user-item interactions. On the client side, a relation-aware GNN model leverages diverse KG relationships. To protect local interaction items and obscure gradients, we employ pseudo-labeling and Local Differential Privacy (LDP). Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate the competitive performance of our approach compared to centralized algorithms while ensuring privacy preservation. Moreover, FedRKG achieves an average accuracy improvement of 4% compared to existing federated learning baselines. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Jointly Defending DeepFake Manipulation and Adversarial Attack Using Decoy Mechanism

Highly realistic imaging and video synthesis have become possible and relatively simple tasks with the rapid growth of generative adversarial networks (GANs). GAN-related applications, such as DeepFake image and video manipulation and adversarial attacks, have been used to disrupt and confound the truth in images and videos over social media. DeepFake technology aims to synthesize high visual quality image content that can mislead the human vision system, while the adversarial perturbation attempts to mislead the deep neural networks to a wrong prediction. Defense strategy becomes difficult when adversarial perturbation and DeepFake are combined. This study examined a novel deceptive mechanism based on statistical hypothesis testing against DeepFake manipulation and adversarial attacks. First, a deceptive model based on two isolated sub-networks was designed to generate two-dimensional random variables with a specific distribution for detecting the DeepFake image and video. This research proposes a maximum likelihood loss for training the deceptive model with two isolated sub-networks. Afterward, a novel hypothesis was proposed for a testing scheme to detect the DeepFake video and images with a well-trained deceptive model. The comprehensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed decoy mechanism could be generalized to compressed and unseen manipulation methods for both DeepFake and attack detection. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

In the realm of recommendation systems, achieving real-time performance in embedding similarity tasks is often hindered by the limitations of traditional Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) methods, which suffer from high latency due to inefficient memory access patterns. This paper identifies these critical gaps and introduces AccelES, a novel approach that significantly enhances the efficiency of Top-K SpMV. Our method employs a two-stage calculation scheme: the first stage utilizes a compact, low-bit dataset to quickly identify the most relevant entries, while the second stage performs full-precision calculations solely on this pruned subset, thereby minimizing computational overhead. Furthermore, AccelES incorporates innovative matrix representations, Ultra-CSR and Random-CSR, which optimize memory bandwidth utilization. Experimental results demonstrate that AccelES accelerates performance, surpassing state-of-the-art FPGA, GPU, and CPU solutions by factors of 3.4×, 2.5×, and 153.3×, respectively, under controlled conditions. These advancements not only enhance processing speed but also significantly improve real-time performance in recommendation systems, establishing AccelES as a pivotal contribution to the field of Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication. © 2025 IEEE.

Our department offers several degrees leading to a Bachelor of science in Computer science, Computer Networking, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, and data science. All our programs are designed to be hands-on and expose students to a wide skill set. All our majors need to take several security-related courses. One of the latest security related courses we developed is in Quantum computing with a focus on security. Quantum computing is a groundbreaking technology that exploits the laws and properties of quantum mechanics. It can dramatically speed up computations of certain problems and surpass the computation power of modern supercomputers. One notable quantum algorithm we cover in our newly developed course is Grover's algorithm. It is used to search an unstructured database while providing quadratic speedup, compared to its classical counterpart. While demonstrating Grover's algorithm in the classroom, the students raise many questions and explaining all the details of the algorithm is challenging. In this paper, we explain and illustrate the theoretical and implementational challenges and provide examples and solutions. © 2023 IEEE.

The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the advent of 6G technologies have introduced computationally intensive tasks that often surpass the processing capabilities of user devices. Efficient and secure resource allocation in serverless multi-cloud edge computing environments is essential for supporting these demands and advancing distributed computing. However, existing solutions frequently struggle with the complexity of multi-cloud infrastructures, robust security integration, and effective application of traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques under system constraints. To address these challenges, we present SARMTO, a novel framework that integrates an action-constrained DRL model. SARMTO dynamically balances resource allocation, task offloading, security, and performance by utilizing a Markov decision process formulation, an adaptive security mechanism, and sophisticated optimization techniques. Extensive simulations across varying scenarios-including different task loads, data sizes, and MEC capacities-show that SARMTO consistently outperforms five baseline approaches, achieving up to a 40% reduction in system costs and a 41.5% improvement in energy efficiency over state-of-the-art methods. These enhancements highlight SARMTO ’s potential to revolutionize resource management in intricate distributed computing environments, opening the door to more efficient and secure IoT and edge computing applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM), such as PMIO and PM2.5, significantly impacts ecosystems, climate, and human health. Previous studies have shown that black carbon, a type of PM2.5, significantly contributes to global warming. To this end, this study introduces a set of advanced neural network models aimed at improving air quality predictions within ur-ban environments, specifically targeting PM2.5 and PMIO. By harnessing data from Chile's National Air Quality Information System (SINCA), we employ a diverse array of neural networks, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), a hybrid CNN-LSTM model called ConvLSTM, transformers, and XGBoost models. Our empirical results show that these models are adept at forecasting air pollution trends, with CNN in particular outperforming all other models, providing crucial insights for real-time environmental monitoring. Our innovative approach enables policymakers and public health officials to take timely and effective measures to combat urban air pollution, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life in metropolitan areas. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, the cyber security scenario has transformed predominantly from conventional response-based security mechanisms to proactive security strategies. And this transformation is still continuing which is shifting it from proactive security strategies to cyber immunity which eliminates the cyber threats by introducing stringent and adaptive security measures. In the process of developing new security algorithms/procedures, accurate modelling and effective simulation play a vital role for the robustness and effectiveness of proposed system. It is also necessary to analyze the behaviour of proposed system against multiple types of known cyber attacks. This paper focuses on the existing network testbeds for an effective analysis and monitoring while proposing a new network testbed for examining new security concepts like cyber immunity. The proposed network testbed is designed to incorporate the methods and procedures of Nature-inspired Cyber Security to accommodate the adaptive responses against the sophisticated and ever-advancing cyber attacks. The proposed testbed provides customizable analytical tool to design, test and examine the new security algorithms through a rich set of attack scenarios. It also allows developers to design, implement, and evaluate their defensive techniques with library support. © 2021 River Publishers.
