Vibrations of tandem cold rolling mill: coupled excitation of rolling force and variable stiffness of fault-free back-up roll bearing

Vibration issues of a five-stand tandem cold rolling mill were found in the steel production practice,and the experimental observation and numerical analysis indicated that the vibrations were related to the back-up roll *** results were validated by replacing the back-up roll bearing with the new bearing resulting in 30%decline in vibration *** describing the four-row cylindrical roller bearing and the vertical system of the cold rolling mill including the bearing were ***,the mechanisms of periodic excitation and amplified vibrations of fault-free bearing were explained theoretically,along with the analysis of bifurcation behaviors of the motion states of the roller bearing and rolling mill *** is found that the energy transmitted between vibrations with different frequencies if multiple excitation frequencies in the rolling mill system were close.

A facile and efficient ball-milling assisted sol-gel synthesis route was developed to prepare triclinic e-LiVOPO_(4)(LVOP)material with lanthanum(La)and cerium(Ce)modification individually as well as *** LVOP/LaPO_(4)/CePO_(4)composite cathode material was successfully synthesized and results show that La and Ce co-modification noticeably improves the electrochemical performance by enhancing the high voltage capacity upon cycling,which indicates contributions from the good ionic conductors LaPO_(4)and CePO_(4).The simultaneous La and Ce modification improves the high voltage performance significantly with an increase of 50%in high voltage capacity after 20 cycles compared to pure *** also shows stabilized cycling perfo rmance with 91%capacity rete ntion after 50 cycles at 0.1 C rate,along with high-rate capability with a capacity of 83.1 mAh/g compared to the pristine sample showing the capacity of 51.6 mAh/g at a high rate of *** can be attributed to the good conductivity of LaPO_(4)and CePO_(4).In addition,the LVOP/LaPO_(4)/CePO_(4)composite and the pristine LVOP give a charge transfer resistance of-105 and-212Ω,respectively,showing much lower impedance due to a combination of La and Ce addition.

Cybersecurity education incorporates a variety of teaching methods such as traditional lectures, lectures combined with hands-on exercises, and concept maps. One of the most well-known instructional methods is the use of lectures supplemented by hands-on activities. However, often these exercises either lack a strong connect with the lecture material or invariably lead students step-by-step in predetermined tasks, thereby hindering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Hence, the instructional method falls short on providing students with a comprehensive understanding of complex and often associated cybersecurity concepts as encountered in real-world security incidents. The authors propose that a problem-based learning (PBL) approach can effectively address these gaps and improve cybersecurity education learning outcomes. This paper presents an application of PBL approach for teaching cybersecurity and ethical hacking in community colleges that play a crucial role in meeting the demand for cybersecurity professionals, but often face several challenges to effectively introduce cybersecurity concepts in their curriculum. Through this research, an existing course on ethical hacking is redesigned using the PBL pedagogy and offered to community college students. The course involves several PBL modules that are developed to cover all key aspects of ethical hacking and implemented using open-source software's. Each PBL module is based on a real-world cybersecurity incident and mapped to the MITRE ATT&CK framework. An external independent evaluation is conducted to assess the effectiveness of the proposed teaching methodology. Overall, the obtained results positively impact students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, along with facilitating their understanding of key cybersecurity concepts. 100% of students reported that they enjoyed the PBL exercises. 75% of the students believed that PBL enhanced their learning of key concepts to a grea

Resource assessment for combined offshore wind and wave energy in China

The development of offshore wind farms has experienced rapid growth during the past decade. In particular, China has the highest number of installations worldwide, but some challenges exist for further development. Consequently, some researchers suggest combining wave energy with offshore wind energy. To fully implement this plan, a comprehensive resource assessment of combined offshore wind and wave energy systems is needed. Investigations of the parameters, such as the spatial and temporal distribution of wind and wave energy, aggregate resource reserves, available technical potential, and total capacity factor, are vital for designing the required wind turbines and wave energy converters. To assist scientific development and governmental decision making, this paper aims to evaluate offshore wind and wave energy resources from a technological perspective. The results show that theoretical offshore wind and wave energy resources are abundant in China's ocean territory, with a potential of approximately 3 TW. Technically, of the three most popular offshore wind turbines, i.e., 6, 8, and 10 MW, 10 MW is overall the most suitable in China. However, of the three wave energy converters, i.e., 120, 250, and 750 kW, 120 kW is the best candidate for Liaoning Province, and 750 kW is the most suitable for the remainder of its region. Overall, the total annual energy production is approximately 7000 TWh.

This paper proposes an innovative stakeholder-centric approach for managing prosumer exports in distribution networks ensuring stakeholder benefits. The rapid inclusion of photovoltaic (PV) systems leads to excessive exports, affecting the stability and performance of the distribution networks and fostering effective export management. In addition, the emergence of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services presents challenges that may exacerbate export-related issues. Several distribution companies use fixed export limits for PV prosumers without looking at network performance. Current studies suggest dynamic limits to unlock export capabilities, providing variable export opportunities while neglecting diverse capabilities and nodal disparities of prosumers. By amalgamating dynamic export limits and prosumer priority indexing, this paper endeavours to derive individualized export limits in distribution networks. This research examined dynamic export capabilities on a real Australian suburban distribution feeder with 966 customers utilizing diverse capacities, nodal situations, and network uncertainties. The prosumer priority ranking is based on nodal constraints, time, and individual capabilities. The paper highlights participatory export limits, utilizing dynamic export limits and individual rankings, to offer enhanced export flexibility, benefiting stakeholders both distribution network operators and prosumers. These stakeholder-centric export limits provide a promising avenue for seamless PV and V2G integration toward a sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem. © The Institution of engineering & technology 2024.

This paper presents an inline terahertz (THz) waveguide bandpass filter (BPF) based on the bandstop resonator pairs. It is implemented by E-plane stubs. The proposed resonators operate at the lower and upper stopbands of the designed BPF to provide sharp roll-off and out-of-band rejection. Both stopbands can be controlled independently and cascaded in parallel from source to load without mutual interference. The unloaded quality factors of E-plane stub resonators determine the bandwidths of both stopbands, which are equal to the spurious-free frequency ranges of the lower and upper stopbands, respectively. Since the proposed BPF design adopts bandstop resonator pairs resonating at the rejection band, it will achieve a lower transmission loss than the conventional BPFs with resonators at the passband. A 5th-order BPF with a minimum measured insertion loss of 0.2 dB and 11% 1-dB bandwidth at 250 GHz is fabricated. The measurement results verify that multiple transmission zeroes (TZs) are achieved at the lower and upper stop bands, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Gradient sparsification for efficient wireless federated learning with differential privacy

Federated learning(FL) enables distributed clients to collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing raw data with each other. However, it suffers from the leakage of private information from uploading models. In addition, as the model size grows, the training latency increases due to the limited transmission bandwidth and model performance degradation while using differential privacy(DP)protection. In this paper, we propose a gradient sparsification empowered FL framework with DP over wireless channels, to improve training efficiency without sacrificing convergence performance. Specifically, we first design a random sparsification algorithm to retain a fraction of the gradient elements in each client's local model, thereby mitigating the performance degradation induced by DP and reducing the number of transmission parameters over wireless channels. Then, we analyze the convergence bound of the proposed algorithm, by modeling a non-convex FL problem. Next, we formulate a time-sequential stochastic optimization problem for minimizing the developed convergence bound, under the constraints of transmit power, the average transmitting delay, as well as the client's DP requirement. Utilizing the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework, we develop an analytical solution to the optimization problem. Extensive experiments have been implemented on three real-life datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm. We show that our proposed algorithms can fully exploit the interworking between communication and computation to outperform the baselines, i.e., random scheduling, round robin, and delay-minimization algorithms.

Rapid screening and optimization of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process in unconventional reservoirs is urgently needed but challenging due to the complexity of this process and poor understanding of seepage in multiscale porous media. To address this issue, an interpretable model with high interpretability was developed to evaluate the response of CO2-EOR processes using random forest (RF) to maximize performance. The feature importance and interaction analyses were conducted to enhance the interpretability of RF model from global to local levels. The genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the CO2-EOR response, and select operational parameters with a minimum CO2 injection and maximum incremental oil recovery. To validate the reliability of the method, the results of the GA-RF model were compared with numerical simulation results under the same conditions, yielding an average relative error of 5.3%. The feature importance analyses show that geological parameters such as Φ and SO have a greater impact on the oil recovery compared to operational parameters. This work represents a pioneering advancement in the rapid optimization of the CO2-EOR process in unconventional reservoirs. The developed workflow offers an efficient process for optimizing the most suitable CO2-EOR process for various types of reservoirs and provides valuable time and resource savings in the optimization.
