Purpose: The assessment of spinal posture is a difficult endeavour given the lack of identifiable bony landmarks for placement of skin markers. Moreover, potentially significant soft tissue artefacts along the spine further affect the accuracy of marker-based approaches. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to develop an experimental framework to assess spinal postures by using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) imaging. Methods: A phantom spine model immersed in water was scanned using 3D US in a neutral and two curved postures mimicking a forward flexion in the sagittal plane while the US probe was localised by three electromagnetic tracking sensors attached to the probe head. The obtained anatomical ‘coarse’ registrations were further refined using an automatic registration algorithm and validated by an experienced sonographer. Spinal landmarks were selected in the US images and validated against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of the same phantom through image registration. Their position was then related to the location of the tracking sensors identified in the acquired US volumes, enabling the localisation of landmarks in the global coordinate system of the tracking device. Results: Results of this study show that localised 3D US enables US-based anatomical reconstructions comparable to clinical standards and the identification of spinal landmarks in different postures of the spine. The accuracy in sensor identification was 0.49 mm on average while the intra- and inter-observer reliability in sensor identification was strongly correlated with a maximum deviation of 0.8 mm. Mapping of landmarks had a small relative distance error of 0.21 mm (SD = ±0.16) on average. Conclusion: This study implies that localised 3D US holds the potential for the assessment of full spinal posture by accurately and non-invasively localising vertebrae in space. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a crucial ophthalmic imaging technique that is subject to speckle noise which can obscure pathological features and hinder accurate segmentation. A standard approach to OCT image noise is to capture and average multiple (typically 30) B-scans at the same tissue location. However this is not always possible, particularly for children and patients with pathology who have more difficulty fixating during the scanning process. In the worst scenario, the OCT scanner will stop before achieving the target scans as the exposure time is too long. It is important therefore to seek ways of synthesising better quality images that rely on fewer scans. This paper frames the OCT image reconstruction problem as a multiple-input extension of the image-to-image translation problem. The goal is to match the perceptual quality of the “gold standard” averaged image by synthesising a new image from between 1 and 8 B-scan slides. Building on previous work, we propose a multi-input conditional GAN-based architecture that incorporates a lightweight U-Net generator with a PatchGAN discriminator. Additionally, we examine the impact of a gated attention (GA) mechanism within the U-Net architecture, and the impact of increasing depth of filters. Experiments were conducted with varying numbers of input slices, comparing the results to averaged images derived from the same number of slices as well as the gold standard averaged over 30 B-scans. There is no single reliable metric for image quality. Therefore this paper compares images over a range of indicative metrics including peak-signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), texture preservation (TP) and edge preservation (EP), as well as three no-reference image sharpness metrics: just noticeable blur (JNB), perceptual similarity index(PSI) and spectral and spatial sharpness (S3). With the prevalence of cloud storage, people prefer to outsource their data to the cloud for flexibility and reliability. Undoubtedly, there are lots of redundancy among these data. However, high-end storage with deduplication costs heavy computation and increases the data management complexity. Potential customers need the redundancy proportion information of their outsourced data to decide whether high-end storage with deduplication is worthwhile. Thus, many researchers have previously attempted to predict the redundant ratio. However, existing mechanisms ignore the redundancy proportion among similar chunks containing many duplicate data. Although resemblance detection, detecting the duplicate parts among similar data, has become a hot issue, it is hardly applied to the conventional deduplication ratio estimation because of unacceptable calculation cost. Therefore, we analyze the limitations and challenges of deduplication ratio prediction in prediction scope and response time and further propose a novel prediction scheme. By leveraging the context-aware resemblance detection, and confidence interval theory, our method can achieve faster estimation speed with higher accuracy in deduplication ratio compared with the state-of-the-art work. Finally, the results show that our method can efficiently and effectively estimate the proportion of duplicate chunks and redundant data among similar chunks by conducting experiments on real workloads.

Networks of ground stations designed to transmit and receive at optical wavelengths through the atmosphere offer an opportunity to provide on-demand, high-bandwidth, secure communications with spacecraft in Earth orbit and beyond. This work describes the operation and activities of current Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) ground stations in Germany and Australasia. In Germany, FSOC facilities are located at the Oberpfaffenhofen campus of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR), the Laser-Bodenstation in Trauen (Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center, DLR), and the Research Center Space of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in Neubiberg. The DLR also operates a ground station in Almeria, Spain as part of the European Optical Nucleus Network. The Australasian Optical Ground Station Network (AOGSN) is a proposed network of 0.5 – 0.7 m class optical telescopes located across Australia and New Zealand. Recently the field of cavity magnonics, a field focused on controlling the interaction between magnons and confined microwave photons within microwave resonators, has drawn significant attention as it offers a platform for enabling advancements in quantum- and spin-based technologies. Here, we introduce excitation vector fields, whose polarisation and profile can be easily tuned in a two-port cavity setup, thus acting as an effective experimental knob to explore the coupled dynamics of cavity magnon-polaritons. Moreover, we develop theoretical models that accurately predict and reproduce the experimental results for any polarisation state and field profile within the cavity resonator. This versatile experimental platform offers a new avenue for controlling spin-photon interactions and as such also delivering a mechanism to readily control the exchange of information between hybrid systems. The practicality of extracting natural resonant modes from the late-time target responses of conducting rectangular plates with various length-to-width ratios is studied using the matrix pencil method. The extracted resonant modes follow a similar behavior as the results obtained from a theoretical analysis reported in the literature. Our results show that it is feasible for these modes to be excited using a practical system, which opens the opportunities for automated target recognition.

In this paper, we propose a novel complex convolutional neural network (CNN) CSI enhancer for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), which exploits the correlation between the sensing parameters (such as angle-of-arrival and range) and the channel state information (CSI) to significantly improve the CSI estimation accuracy and further enhance the sensing accuracy. Within the CNN CSI enhancer, we use the complex-valued computation layers to form the CNN, which maintains the phase information of CSI. We also transform the CSI into the sparse angle-delay domain, leading to heatmap images with prominent peaks that can be efficiently processed by CNN. Based on the enhanced CSI outputs, we further propose a novel biased fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based sensing scheme for improving the range sensing accuracy, by artificially introducing phase biasing terms. Extensive simulation results show that the ISAC complex CNN CSI enhancer can converge within 30 training epochs. The normalized mean square error (NMSE) of its CSI estimates is about 17 dB lower than that of the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator, and the bit error rate (BER) of demodulation using the enhanced CSI estimation approaches that with perfect CSI. Finally, the range estimation MSE of the proposed biased FFT-based sensing method approaches that of the subspace-based sensing method, at a much lower complexity. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) is a developing method to secure information exchange in future quantum networks. With the recent developments in quantum technology and greater access to space, a global quantum network secured by CVQKD could be within reach. In this work, the structures of existing QKD networks are analysed, and how they can be fit into a general overarching three-layer QKD network architecture for the endeavour of a global QKD network. Such a network could comprise of different links in fibre and free-space. The finite size limit secret key rates (SKRs) with multidimensional reconciliation were calculated for the different links for which CVQKD can be used in such a network. The results show that CVQKD generally achieves longer distances and larger SKRs in inter-satellite, satellite-to-ground, fibre, and underwater links in descending order. The different links and nodes were classified and secret key distribution was studied as a graph problem. The link capacity, a routing metric for secret key distribution, which considers a dynamic SKR based on dynamic links is presented. Its use in simulated CVQKD networks is presented for the aim of spatiotemporal secret key distribution through a dynamic CVQKD network. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.
