Foundation models(FMs) [1] have revolutionized software development and become the core components of large software systems. This paradigm shift, however, demands fundamental re-imagining of software engineering theories and methodologies [2]. Instead of replacing existing software modules implemented by symbolic logic, incorporating FMs' capabilities to build software systems requires entirely new modules that leverage the unique capabilities of ***, while FMs excel at handling uncertainty, recognizing patterns, and processing unstructured data, we need new engineering theories that support the paradigm shift from explicitly programming and maintaining user-defined symbolic logic to creating rich, expressive requirements that FMs can accurately perceive and implement.

Image Guidance Encoder-Decoder Model in Image Captioning and Its Application

This paper introduces a new network model - the Image Guidance Encoder-Decoder Model (IG-ED), designed to enhance the efficiency of image captioning and improve predictive accuracy. IG-ED, a fusion of the convolutional network VGGNet-16 and the long short-term memory network (LSTM), is designed based on the encoder-decoder structure. The image captioning performance sees significant enhancements when leveraging the IG-ED network model. The network training process unfolds in a series of steps. Initially, the input image undergoes convolution via the VGGNet-16 network, producing a 512-dimensional vector. Concurrently, each word in the image's caption is encoded to generate a corresponding 512-dimensional vector consistent with the image feature dimension. These two vectors form the input for the decoding process. Subsequently, the vectors are fed into the redesigned fusion LSTM (F-LSTM) network at different time steps to gradually train the parameters of the IG-ED framework. The training process is completed by utilizing a loss function for determining convergence. Evaluation of the IG-ED model's performance is conducted using CIDEr and seven other evaluation metrics on the MSCOCO 2014 dataset. The results exhibit substantial improvements over the "Adaptive Attention Mode" network and "Neural Talk" network. Additionally, the parameter count of the IG-ED architecture is significantly reduced compared to the "Adaptive Attention Mode" network, leading to decreased computational resource requirements and enabling edge computing on the neural network. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). Design and Characterization of High Quality-Factor Inductors for Wireless Systems Compatible With Flexible Large-Area Electronics

Resonant operation, exploiting high quality-factor planar inductors, has recently enabled gigahertz (GHz) applications for large-area electronics (LAE), providing a new technology platform for large-scale and flexible wireless systems. This work first presents the design, analysis, and characterization methodology of flex-compatible large-area planar inductors. Specifically, three distinct radio frequency (RF) inductor characterization methods are experimentally demonstrated and compared, with the most accurate method among them (i.e., S-parameters in a two-port configuration) demonstrating a record-high quality factor of up to 65in the 2.4-GHz frequency band. Enabled by accurate characterization, key inductor design considerations regarding the resistive loss due to inductor's metal traces are then discussed. Finally, a case study of the recently demonstrated LAE resonant switch shows the potential of these high-performance inductors towards large-area and conformal wireless systems for integrated Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G/6G applications. © 2022 IEEE.

We demonstrate a toroidal classification for quantum spin systems, revealing an intrinsic geometric duality within this structure. Through our classification and duality, we reveal that various bipartite quantum features in magnon systems can manifest equivalently in both bipartite ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials, based upon the availability of relevant Hamiltonian parameters. Additionally, the results highlight the antiferromagnetic regime as an ultrafast dual counterpart to the ferromagnetic regime, both exhibiting identical capabilities for quantum spintronics and technological applications. Concrete illustrations are provided, demonstrating how splitting and squeezing types of two-mode magnon quantum correlations can be realized across ferro- and antiferromagnetic regimes.

A Neural Network Slab Quality Prediction Analysis Based on a Hybrid Intelligent Optimisation Algorithm

To address the problem of inaccurate prediction of slab quality in continuous casting, an algorithm based on particle swarm optimisation and differential evolution is proposed. The algorithm combines BP neural network prediction method. Firstly, the factors affecting the quality of the slab are analysed and a sufficient number of sample sets are extracted for training;Secondly, the particle swarm optimisation algorithm is optimised, and then the BP neural network is optimised and the chaos mechanism is introduced to increase the continuity of motion of the particles. The population is partitioned hierarchically, and different types of particles are processed separately to improve the global search capability of the algorithm. The differential evolution algorithm is also integrated to optimise cross-selection and increase particle diversity. Finally, a prediction model is built to predict and analyse the sample data. In the experiment, three algorithms are tested for different benchmark functions, namely the comparison of convergence, stability and searchability. The optimisation time comparison is completed, the target curve fit test is performed and the slab quality test results are checked. The experimental results show that the PSO-EIDE algorithm has strong optimisation ability, fast convergence speed and obvious improvement in stability and accuracy. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). One of the leading causes of early health detriment is the increasing levels of air pollution in major cities and eventually in indoor spaces. Monitoring the air quality effectively in closed spaces like educational institutes and hospitals can improve both the health and the life quality of the occupants. In this article, we propose an efficient indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring and management system, which uses a combination of cutting-edge technologies to monitor and predict major air pollutants like CO2, PM2.5, TVOCs, and other factors like temperature and humidity. The aim is to create an intelligent environment for IAQ. The data is captured and monitored using an Internet of Things network of sensors, manufactured by ourselves, in different lecture rooms at the university. The obtained data is then processed and correlated in real time using a complex event processing engine and analyzed by machine/deep learning algorithms. A long short-term memory neural network is proposed to forecast IAQ. Then a decision tree regressor is used to identify the relationships between temperature, humidity and different pollutants like CO2 and PM2.5. © 2014 IEEE.

HoloStream: a GPU-powered high-speed user interface for holographic microscopy imaging

This paper presents HoloStream, a GPU-powered high-speed user interface designed for holographic microscopy imaging. The platform reconstructs quantitative phase images rapidly for off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM) systems operating in the telecentric regime. By optimizing critical computational procedures, the HoloStream app reconstructs phase maps of 1280 × 960 pixels up to 11 frames per second (FPS) in live visualization and 90 fps for pre-recorded holographic videos. This real-time phase compensation is performed by upgrading the semi-heuristic phase compensation (SHPC) algorithm through GPU acceleration via PyCUDA. The interface also offers a user-friendly experience with flexible control over acquisition modes, visualization formats, and 3D tracking functionalities. Experimental validation demonstrates the platform’s capability to achieve fast and accurate phase imaging for live microscopy applications. The HoloStream app advances DHM technology by combining high-speed processing with ease of use, making it suitable for a wide range of DHM imaging applications. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Environmental sustainability is crucial for ensuring the long-term health and well-being of our planet and its in-habitants. Precise navigation of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles in agricultural usage, therefore, becomes a crucial com-ponent in ensuring such sustainability. It is no surprise that the use of visible light communication (VLC) in navigation is steadily expanding, driven primarily by its remarkable precision in indoor environments. VLC has significant potential as a su-perior alternative to traditional navigation systems, including the global positioning system (GPS), particularly in dynamic outdoor environments. However, despite its indoor success, addressing the challenges posed by ambient light remains critical, particularly in outdoor scenarios where natural lighting conditions vary substan-tially. This article investigates the complex relationship between ambient light and outdoor VLC technology. The study aims to quantify the impact of ambient light on the receiving power level at varying distances in outdoor VLC systems by employing advanced simulation and modelling techniques. It provides a detailed analysis of the effects of sunlight, offering valuable insights for optimizing the positioning of light transmitters and receivers to enhance performance and reliability in real-world applications. The results discussed have significant implications for advancing outdoor VLC technology. They provide a pathway for creating more resilient and efficient navigation systems that function seamlessly across various environmental conditions. © 2024 IEEE.
