In this work, we study the worst-case consequence of innovation-based integrity attacks with side information in a remote state estimation scenario. A new type of linear attack strategy based on both intercepted and sensing data is proposed and a corresponding stealthiness constraint is characterized. The evolution of the remote estimation error covariance is derived in the presence of the proposed malicious attack, based on which the worst-case attack policy is obtained in closed form. Furthermore, the system estimation performance under the proposed attack is compared with that under the existing attack strategy to determine which attack is more critical in deteriorating system functionality. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the developed results. © 2017

The anisotropic two-dimensional （2D） layered material rhenium disulfide （ReSe2） has attracted considerable attention because of its unusual properties and promising applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, because of its low lattice symmetry and interlayer decoupling, anisotropic growth and out-of-plane growth occur easily, yielding thick flakes, dendritic structure, or flower-like structure. In this stud34 we demonstrated a bottom-up method for the controlled and scalable synthesis of ReSe2 by van der Waals epitaxy. To achieve controllable growth, a micro-reactor with a confined reaction space was constructed by stacking two mica substrates in the chemical vapor deposition system. Within the confined reaction space, the nucleation density and growth rate of ReSe2 were significantly reduced, favoring the large-area synthesis of ReSe2 with a uniform monolayer thickness. The morphological evolution of ReSe2 with growth temperature indicated that the anisotropic growth was suppressed at a low growth temperature （〈600 ℃）. Field-effect transistors employing the grown ReSe2 exhibited p-type conduction with a current ON/OFF ratio up to 10s and a hole carrier mobility of 0.98 cm^2/（V·s）. Furthermore, the ReSe2 device exhibited an outstanding photoresponse to near-infrared light, with responsivity up to 8.4 and 5.1 A/W for 850- and 940-nm light, respectively. This work not only promotes the large-scale application of ReSe2 in high-performance electronic devices but also clarifies the growth mechanism of low-lattice symmetry 2D materials.

The Hodgkin-Huxley model (HH) describes the initiation and propagation of action potentials in neurons closed to the biological conditions, but it is not well suited for large scale simulation of neuronal networks. In this paper, an implementation of the Huber-Braun model is presented. It is a simplified HH-type model and able to reproduce a wide variety of spiking patterns. An FPGA is selected as a reconfigurable hardware implementation platform to simulate the network functionality of the neurons. The 32-bit floating-point format and computation techniques (i.e. CORDIC) instead of LUTs are used to avoid loss of physiological information. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Traffic flow optimization with QoS constrained network admission control

The paper proposes a control design method in order to gate input flow to a protected urban vehicular network such that travel time Quality of Service (QoS) constraints are preserved within the network. In view of the network to be protected (also called the region), two types of queues are distinguished: external and internal. While external queues represent vehicles waiting to enter the protected network, an internal queue can be used to describe the network's aggregated behaviour. By controlling the number of vehicles entering the internal queue, the travel time within the network subject to the vehicular conservation law and the Network Fundamental Diagram (NFD) can be subsequently controlled. The admission controller can thus be interpreted as a mechanism which transforms the unknown arrival process governing the number of vehicles entering the network to a regulated process, such that prescribed QoS requirements on travel time in the network and upper bound on the external queue are satisfied. The admission control problem is formulated as a constrained convex optimization problem and a Model Predictive Control (MPC) problem. A case study demonstrates the benefits of the admission control mechanisms proposed. © 2017

Background: Technological advances in personal informatics allow people to track their own health in a variety of ways, representing a dramatic change in individuals’ control of their own wellness. However, research regarding patient interpretation of traditional medical tests highlights the risks in making complex medical data available to a general audience. Objective: This study aimed to explore how people interpret medical test results, examined in the context of a mobile blood testing system developed to enable self-care and health management. Methods: In a preliminary investigation and main study, we presented 27 and 303 adults, respectively, with hypothetical results from several blood tests via one of the several mobile interface designs: a number representing the raw measurement of the tested biomarker, natural language text indicating whether the biomarker’s level was low or high, or a one-dimensional chart illustrating this level along a low-healthy axis. We measured respondents’ correctness in evaluating these results and their confidence in their interpretations. Participants also told us about any follow-up actions they would take based on the result and how they envisioned, generally, using our proposed personal health system. Results: We find that a majority of participants (242/328, 73.8%) were accurate in their interpretations of their diagnostic results. However, 135 of 328 participants (41.1%) expressed uncertainty and confusion about their ability to correctly interpret these results. We also find that demographics and interface design can impact interpretation accuracy, including false confidence, which we define as a respondent having above average confidence despite interpreting a result inaccurately. Specifically, participants who saw a natural language design were the least likely (421.47 times, P=.02) to exhibit false confidence, and women who saw a graph design were less likely (8.67 times, P=.04) to have false confidence. Through technological and globalization innovation, the traditional mode of instruction in higher education institutions has been transformed through e-learning. It is a new educational trend which created a new medium in the delivery of instruction. The researcher attests by determining the e-learning systems influence on students and instructors is vital to the advance implementation of effective and suitable in e-learning systems. In order to know the perceptions of the students and instructors from higher education, the researcher conducted a survey regarding their current experiences. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of e-learning in higher education. This study shall document the e-learning systems impacts which had on Instructors and Student participant's performance about the level of user satisfaction and productivity, utilization and problems encountered. The study found out that the use of e-learning systems shows a positive influence on student learning. Most instructors utilized e-learning system as presentation and preparation tool in teaching and learning. Evidently, most instructors positively confirm that e-learning supports teaching and learning effectively implemented.

A k-majority tournament T on a finite set of vertices V is defined by a set of 2k - 1 linear orders on V, with an edge u → v in T if u > v in a majority of the linear orders. We think of the linear orders as voter preferences and the vertices of T as candidates, with an edge u → v in T if a majority of voters prefer candidate u to candidate v. In this paper we introduce weighted k-majority tournaments, with each edge u → v weighted by the number of voters preferring u. We define the maximum approval gap γw(T), a measure by which any dominating set of T beats the next most popular candidate. This parameter is analogous to previous work on the size of minimum dominating sets of (unweighted) k-majority tournaments. We prove that k/2 ≤ γw(T) ≤ 2k - 1 for any weighted k-majority tournament T, and construct tournaments with γw(T) = q for any rational number k/2 ≤ q ≤ 2k - 1. Nonlinear photoelasticity to explicate acoustic dephasing dynamics

Detection and controlling of acoustic (AC) phonon phase have been strenuous tasks although such capability is crucial for further manipulating thermal properties. Here, we present a versatile formalism for tracing AC nanowaves with arbitrary strain compositions by incorporating the nonlinear photoelasticity (PE) into ultrafast acoustics where broad AC spectrum encompassing thermally important THz frequency range should be collected far beyond Brillouin frequency. The initial AC phase upon displacive carrier generation could be inherently varied depending on the bipolar AC compositions by implementing externally biased piezoelectric diodes. The importance of adopting nonlinear PE is then manifested from the transient phase shift either abrupt at the point of diffuse surface scattering or gradual during phonon-phonon or phonon-electron scattering events based on which the ratio of nonlinear to linear PE coefficient is experimentally extracted as a function of the detection probe energy, reaching 0.98 slightly below the bandgap. As the probing energy is rather set away from the bandgap, AC phase is completely invariant with any scattering events, exhibiting the conventional trend at Brillouin frequency in linear regime. Under potent influence of nonlinear PE, the AC dephasing time during the propagation are quantified as a function of AC wavepacket size and further correlated with intrinsic and extrinsic AC scattering mechanisms in electron reservoir. Educational Data Mining can help stakeholders give appropriate decisions to improve educational experiences. New knowledge or models are realized when data mining techniques are applied on educational data. This study focuses on building classification model by utilizing data mining techniques for predicting the likelihood of a student to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers（LET）. Several well-known data mining algorithms such as Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, C4.5 Decision Tree, Na?ve Bayes, and Logistic Regression are used to build the models. The performance of these models in terms of accuracy to predict the student’s performance in the Licensure Examination for Teachers, F1 Measure and Area under the Curve（AUC） value were compared to determine which among these classification algorithms performs best. Results show that C4.5 turns to be the most suitable algorithm for the model. It has an accuracy of 73.10%, F1 measure of 62.53% and Area under the Curve value of 0.730. The identified model could be able to identify students who will likely fail the Licensure Examination for Teachers. These students should be given higher priority during their mock board review and be able to pass the board examination. Aside from helping these students, it also helps the institution get higher percentage of passers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers and can be of help during accreditation.
