A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb−1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio B(Q→Wq)=1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

A search for a new Z′ gauge boson predicted by Lμ−Lτ models, based on charged-current Drell–Yan production, pp→W±(*)→Z′μ±ν→μ±μ∓μ±ν, is presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search examines a final state of 3μ plus large missing transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the Z′ production cross section times branching ratio in the mass range of 5–81 GeV. After combining with the previous Z′ search using the neutral-current Drell–Yan production with a 4μ final state, the most stringent exclusion limits to date are achieved in the parameter space of the Z′ coupling strength and mass.

We experimentally demonstrate the active control of a plasmonic metamaterial operating in the quantum regime. A two-dimensional metamaterial consisting of unit cells made from gold nanorods is investigated. Using an external laser we control the temperature of the metamaterial and carry out quantum process tomography on single-photon polarization-encoded qubits sent through, characterizing the metamaterial as a variable quantum channel. The overall polarization response can be tuned by up to 33% for particular nanorod dimensions. To explain the results, we develop a theoretical model and find that the experimental results match the predicted behavior well. This work goes beyond the use of simple passive quantum plasmonic systems and shows that external control of plasmonic elements enables a flexible device that can be used for quantum state engineering. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has a broad physics programme ranging from precision measurements to direct searches for new particles and new interactions, requiring ever larger and ever more accurate datasets of simulated Monte Carlo events. Detector simulation with Geant4 is accurate but requires significant CPU resources. Over the past decade, ATLAS has developed and utilized tools that replace the most CPU-intensive component of the simulation—the calorimeter shower simulation—with faster simulation methods. Here, AtlFast3, the next generation of high-accuracy fast simulation in ATLAS, is introduced. AtlFast3 combines parameterized approaches with machine-learning techniques and is deployed to meet current and future computing challenges, and simulation needs of the ATLAS experiment. With highly accurate performance and significantly improved modelling of substructure within jets, AtlFast3 can simulate large numbers of events for a wide range of physics processes. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The radiative decays χc1(3872) → ψ(2S)γ and χc1(3872) → J/ψγ are used to probe the nature of the χc1(3872) state using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. Using the B+ → χc1(3872)K+ decay, the χc1(3872) → ψ(2S)γ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the χc1(3872) → J/ψγ decay is measured to be (Equation presented), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the χc1(3872) state as a pure D0D∗0 + D0D∗0 molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the χc1(3872) state. © 2024, CC BY.

A search for charged-lepton-flavor violating μτqt (q=u, c) interactions is presented, considering both top-quark production and decay. The data analyzed correspond to 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis targets events containing two muons with the same electric charge, a hadronically decaying τ-lepton and at least one jet, with exactly one b-tagged jet, produced by a μτqt interaction. Agreement with the Standard Model expectation within 1.6 standard deviations is observed, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level (CL) on the charged-lepton-flavor violation branching ratio of B(t→μτq)<8.7×10−7. An effective field theory interpretation is performed yielding 95% CL limits on Wilson coefficients, dependent on the flavor of the associated light quark and the Lorentz structure of the coupling. These range from |clequ3(2313)|/Λ2<0.10 TeV−2 for μτut to |clequ1(2323)|/Λ2<1.8 TeV−2 for μτct. An additional interpretation is performed for scalar leptoquark production inducing charged-lepton-flavor violation, with fixed intergenerational couplings. Upper limits on leptoquark coupling strengths are set at the 95% CL, ranging from λLQ=1.3 to λLQ=3.7 for leptoquark masses between 0.5 and 2.0 TeV.

A method is presented to reconstruct charged particles with lifetimes between 10 ps and 10 ns, which considers a combination of their decay products and the partial tracks created by the initial charged particle. Using the Ξ− baryon as a benchmark, the method is demonstrated with simulated events and proton-proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−1 collected with the LHCb detector in 2018. Significant improvements in the angular resolution and the signal purity are obtained. The method is implemented as part of the LHCb Run 3 event trigger in a set of requirements to select detached hyperons. This is the first demonstration of the applicability of this approach at the LHC, and the first to show its scaling with instantaneous luminosity. © 2024, CC BY.

The first observation of the Bs0 → D∗+D∗- decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the B0 → D∗+D∗- decay are presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV between 2011 and 2018. The decay is observed with more than 10 standard deviations and the time-integrated ratio of branching fractions is determined to be BB ((BBs00→→DD∗∗++DD∗-∗- ) ) = 0.269 ± 0.032 ± 0.011 ± 0.008 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio fs/fd. The Bs0 → D∗+D∗- branching fraction is calculated to be B(Bs0 → D∗+D∗-) = (2.15 ± 0.26 ± 0.09 ± 0.06 ± 0.16) × 10-4, where the fourth uncertainty is due to the B0 → D∗+D∗- branching fraction. These results are calculated using the average Bs0 meson lifetime in simulation. Correction factors are reported for scenarios where either a purely heavy or a purely light Bs0 eigenstate is considered. © 2022, CC BY.

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb¯. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250–450, 450–650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4−0.9+1.0 and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)−1.4+1.8(syst) pb.
