This research reveals the adsorption of cadmium (Cd²⁺) and zinc (Zn⁺²) from water using sewage sludge-derived biochar pyrolysed at 700 °C (SSB). The morphology and particle characteristics of SSB were characterised through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size distribution (PSD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The adsorption study showed that the optimum contact times for removing Zn²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were 80 and 140 minutes, respectively. 95.51% Zn²⁺ and 97.54% Cd²⁺ could be removed from spiked solutions featuring 50 mg/L of Zn²⁺ and 50 mg/L Cd²⁺, each treated with 25 g/L biochar. The optimum pH of the solutions was 8–9 at a temperature of 40°C, indicating some precipitation of the metal ions at an alkaline pH. The highest adsorption capacity of SSB for Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ was found to be 3.02 and 2.51 mg/g, respectively, which compares favourably with other adsorbents. The isotherm studies confirmed experimental data to closely follow the Langmuir isotherm model at an R² value of 0.9846 and 0.9816 for Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺, respectively. The kinetic study confirmed the physical interaction between the adsorbents and the adsorbate. The spontaneous and exothermic nature of the process was confirmed by negative values of change in Gibbs free energy (ΔG) and enthalpy (ΔH). SSB could be regenerated for 6 cycles. Overall, this study explores sustainability, recycling, and waste management by offering SSB as a potentially cost-effective and environment-friendly solution to remove Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ from water. © 2024 The Authors

The study explores green chemistry to purify drinking water using Moringa oleifera (MO) Lam. seeds. This is done by investigating the coagulation efficiency of MO seed extracts for treating moderately turbid water. The research reveals the influence of various factors such as dose, settling time, shelf life, storage temperature, and extractant (water and 1 M NaCl solution) on the coagulation efficiency of MO Lam. protein. The MO seed protein extracts (MOPE) dissolved in tap water, and 1 M NaCl solution was characterised for their performance at ambient temperature and 4 ℃. Within 3 h of MOPE treatment, the turbidity reduced by 90–93 % without significantly altering pH and total dissolved solids (TDS) or electrical conductivity (EC) of the treated water samples. Although the dose rate was found to increase with the storage time, the optimum Moringa oleifera dose was 30–50 mg/l. Overall, the refrigerated MOPE in NaCl offered an extended shelf life, exhibiting good coagulation for up to 7 days compared to 3–4 days for the non-refrigerated variant. © 2024 The Author(s)

This paper presents an analysis of viscous effects on the added mass and damping forces during free heave decay of a cylinder with a hemispherical bottom. Results from unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations and linear potential-flow solutions are compared. Expressions for the time-varying viscous added mass and damping coefficients are derived based on first-order Fourier analysis of the URANS results. Therefore, viscous effects are extracted by comparing the URANS results and linear potential-flow solutions, as nonlinear effects in this case are demonstrated to be negligible. It is observed that viscous effects on the added mass coefficient are minor during heave decay, such that the linear potential-flow model can predict the value of the added mass coefficient to within 5% deviations. In contrast, the viscous damping coefficient exhibits strong time-dependent variations. A parametric study of the effects of initial displacement, cylinder diameter and draft shows that viscous damping forces can play an important role when the cylinder has a relatively small diameter and large draft. Further, the damping coefficient is transformed to the nondimensional drag force coefficient, and its dependence on the Reynolds number Re is investigated, for Keulegan–Carpenter numbers in the range KC =1.5–2.5. It is found that the drag force coefficient is likely to be unrelated to Re and KC during the first cycle. From the second cycle to the fourth cycle, the drag force coefficient rapidly decreases with increasing Re , up to Re ≈ 3 × 10 5 . © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Existing algorithms do not generalize well to the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and camera modality when trained to detect cars with a vision-based algorithm, or vice versa when LIDAR is used as a separate sensor. These systems would fail in severe conditions such as low lighting and inclement weather. Itpresents a system that combines Lidar and vision-based data utilizing sensor fusion to enable Lidar's depth perception capabilities and vision-based algorithms for encompassing object recognition tasks. Such technology increases obstacle detection, object classification, and real-time decision making to provide a safer autonomous navigation system. It combines Kalman Filtering, convolutional neural network (CNN) for object detection, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) for LIDAR data clustering, support vector machine (SVM) for classification, and predictive path planning. The results demonstrate the following improvements: 96.5% detection accuracy, 1.5% false positive rate, and 0.2% collision rate. It is more robust and outperforms existing systems in real-world situations such as bad illumination, severe weather, and complex traffic scenarios.

This paper presents a pioneering experimental proof-of-concept study to validate a novel concept of prestress technology that used only pure bio-based composite materials while achieved consistent prestressed stress distribution within the structure member, and provided in-situ flexibility, improved structural performance, and maximised the rate of utilisation of each material. Industrial level of facilities were used during this development. The prestress is achieved by pressurised/forced lamination of multiple components with different materials and geometrical properties. The prestressing process is activated during the pressure release stage during which the components are interacting with each other, creating different stress statuses that would favour the weaker and adverse the stronger components to maximise the strength exploitation of different materials. Using laminated bamboo and timber as an example pair, twenty-two glulam, non-prestressed and prestressed laminated bamboo-timber composite beams were manufactured, tested, and analysed to provide an in-depth understanding of the structural behaviours of these novel structural members. Failure modes, yielding, ultimate and serviceability limit loads, and corresponding deflections, as well as the histories of strain development at key positions of the specimens were examined. The experimental study confirmed the feasibility, effectiveness and industrial scalability of the proposed technology. The novel concept provides a new approach for developing the prestress technology for bio-based materials, and this experimental study laid the foundation for its future analytical development and numerical studies. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Ultra-chaos: an insurmountable objective obstacle of reproducibility and replicability

It is crucial for scientific progress to be able to replicate scientific findings1–4, because scientific claims should gain credence due to the reproducibility and replicability of their main supporting evidences. However, according to Nature’s survey of 1,576 researchers, more than 70% of the surveyed failed to reproduce another scientist’s experiments, and more than half agreed that there exists a significant "crisis of reproducibility"2. Here we reveal a new classification of chaos: normal-chaos and ultra-chaos. Unlike a normal-chaos, statistics of an ultra-chaos are sensitive to small disturbances. Some illustrative examples of ultra-chaos are given here. It is found that statistical non-reproducibility is indeed an inherent property of an ultra-chaos that is at a higher-level of disorder than a normal-chaos. So, it is impossible in practice to replicate experimental/numerical results of an ultra-chaos even in statistical meanings, since random environmental noises always exist and are out of control. Thus, ultra-chaos is indeed an insurmountable objective obstacle of reproducibility and replicability. Similar to Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, such kind of "incompleteness of reproducibility" reveals a limitation of scientific researches. It opens a new door and possibility to study reproducibility crisis, statistical significance, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), chaos theory, turbulence theory, and so on. © 2021, CC BY.

Measuring the concept of PID literacy: user perceptions and understanding of persistent identifiers in support of open scholarly infrastructure

The increasing centrality of persistent identifiers (PIDs) to scholarly ecosystems and the contribution they can make to the burgeoning 'PID graph' has the potential to transform scholarship. Despite their importance as originators of PID data, little is known about researchers' awareness and understanding of PIDs, or their efficacy in using them. In this article we report on the results of an online interactive test designed to elicit exploratory data about researcher awareness and understanding of PIDs. This instrument was designed to explore recognition of PIDs (e.g. DOIs, ORCIDs, etc.) and the extent to which researchers correctly apply PIDs within digital scholarly ecosystems, as well as measure researchers' perceptions of PIDs. Our results reveal irregular patterns of PID understanding and certainty across all participants, though statistically significant disciplinary and academic job role differences were observed in some instances. Uncertainty and confusion were found to exist in relation to dominant schemes such as ORCID and DOIs, even when contextualized within real-world examples. We also show researchers' perceptions of PIDs to be generally positive but that disciplinary differences can be noted, as well as higher levels of aversion to PIDs in specific use cases and negative perceptions where PIDs are measured on an 'activity' semantic dimension. This work therefore contributes to our understanding of scholars' 'PID literacy' and should inform those designing PID-centric scholarly infrastructures, that a significant need for training and outreach to active researchers remains necessary. © 2022, CC BY.

In this paper, the performance optimization of federated learning (FL), when deployed over a realistic wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with digital modulation and over-the-air computation (AirComp) is studied. In particular, a MIMO system is considered in which edge devices transmit their local FL models (trained using their locally collected data) to a parameter server (PS) using beamforming to maximize the number of devices scheduled for transmission. The PS, acting as a central controller, generates a global FL model using the received local FL models and broadcasts it back to all devices. Due to the limited bandwidth in a wireless network, AirComp is adopted to enable efficient wireless data aggregation. However, fading of wireless channels can produce aggregate distortions in an AirComp-based FL scheme. To tackle this challenge, we propose a modified federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm that combines digital modulation with AirComp to mitigate wireless fading while ensuring the communication efficiency. This is achieved by a joint transmit and receive beamforming design, which is formulated as an optimization problem to dynamically adjust the beamforming matrices based on current FL model parameters so as to minimize the transmitting error and ensure the FL performance. To achieve this goal, we first analytically characterize how the beamforming matrices affect the performance of the FedAvg in different iterations. Based on this relationship, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to estimate the local FL models of all devices and adjust the beamforming matrices at the PS for future model transmission. The algorithmic advantages and improved performance of the proposed methodologies are demonstrated through extensive numerical experiments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We live in a world where ubiquitous systems surround us in the form of automated homes, smart appliances and wearable devices. These ubiquitous systems not only enhance productivity but can also provide assistance given a variety of different scenarios. However, these systems are vulnerable to the risk of unauthorized access, hence the ability to authenticate the end-user seamlessly and securely is important. This paper presents an approach for user identification given the physical activity patterns captured using on-body wearable sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. Three machine learning classifiers have been used to discover the activity patterns of users given the data captured from wearable sensors. The recognition results prove that the proposed scheme can effectively recognize a user's identity based on his/her daily living physical activity patterns. © 2020 The Authors.
