In recent years, automated learning systems are widely used for educational and training purposes within various organisations including, schools, universities and further education centres. A common challenge for automated learning approaches is the demand for an effectively well-designed and fit for purpose system that meets the requirements and needs of intended learners to achieve their learning goals. This paper proposes a novel approach for automated learning that is capable of detecting changing trends in learning behaviours and abilities through the use of process mining techniques. The goal is to discover user interaction patterns, and respond by making decisions based on adaptive rules centred on captured user profiles. The approach applies semantic annotation of activity logs within the learning process in order to discover patterns automatically by means of semantic reasoning. Therefore, our proposed approach is grounded on Semantic modelling and process mining techniques. To this end, it is possible to apply effective reasoning methods to make inferences over a Learning Process Knowledge-Base that leads to automated discovery of learning patterns or behaviour.

We adopt automatic language recognition methods to study dialect levelling - a phenomenon that leads to reduced structural differences among dialects in a given spoken language. In terms of dialect characterisation, levelling is a nuisance variable that adversely affects recognition accuracy: The more similar two dialects are, the harder it is to set them apart. We address levelling in Finnish regional dialects using a new SAPU (Satakunta in Speech) corpus containing material from Satakunta (South-Western Finland) between 2007 and 2013. To define a compact and universal set of sound units to characterize dialects, we adopt speech attributes features, namely manner and place of articulation. It will be shown that speech attribute distributions can indeed characterise differences among dialects. Experiments with an i-vector system suggest that (1) the attribute features achieve higher dialect recognition accuracy and (2) they are less sensitive against age-related levelling in comparison to traditional spectral approach. A novel control technique for step-up DC/AC renewable energy converter to improve the voltage gain, efficiency and reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) is investigated. The main drawback of the conventional control techniques for DC/AC conversion is drawn from the multistage energy conversion structure which implies complicated control, protection algorithms and reduced reliability due to the increased number of switching devices. To overcome this problem, combination of quasi impedance voltage fed source inverter with a modified double carrier based SPWM in simple operation condition for maximum constant boost control with 3 rd harmonic injection is proposed. This is achieved by voltage-fed quasi impedance source inverter with continuous input current implemented at the converter input side and it can boost the input voltage by utilizing extra switching state with the help of shoot-through state technique. The proposed strategy gives a significantly high voltage gain compared to the traditional PWM techniques since all the zero states are converted into shoot-through states.

The UK's transport infrastructure is one of the most heavily used in the world. The performance of these networks is critically dependent on the performance of cutting and embankment slopes which make up £20B of the £60B asset value of major highway infrastructure alone. The rail network in particular is also one of the oldest in the world: many of these slopes are suffering high incidents of instability (increasing with time). This paper describes the development of a fundamental understanding of earthwork material and system behaviour, through the systematic integration of research across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Spatially these range from microscopic studies of soil fabric, through elemental materials behaviour to whole slope modelling and monitoring and scaling up to transport networks. Temporally, historical and current weather event sequences are being used to understand and model soil deterioration processes, and climate change scenarios to examine their potential effects on slope performance in futures up to and including the 2080s. The outputs of this research are being mapped onto the different spatial and temporal scales of infrastructure slope asset management to inform the design of new slopes through to changing the way in which investment is made into aging assets. The aim ultimately is to help create a more reliable, cost effective, safer and more resilient transport system.

Geospatial water quality assessment system for the Sg. Buloh river basin in Malaysia

Assessment of pollution risk requires the assimilation of spatio-temporally variable data on water quality parameters. This paper describes a GIS user-interface program coupled with a water quality index (WQI) model that was developed and built to assess water quality in the Sg. Buloh river basin. Fifty-two water sampling stations were selected for this study, and the WQI model considers parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and ammonia nitrogen, as used by the Department of Environment in Malaysia. The spatial pattern of each parameter was analysed, and WQI values were calculated, ranging from 4.48 to 76.8 on a scale with 100 representing the highest pristine quality. A map of WQI is provided, which will help planners and decision makers to develop water pollution control strategies, and the model is capable of extension with further data to address pollution risk. Pattern recognition is seen as a major challenge within the field of data mining and knowledge discovery. For the work in this paper, we have analyzed a range of widely used algorithms for finding frequent patterns with the purpose of discovering how these algorithms can be used to obtain frequent patterns over large transactional databases. This has been presented in the form of a comparative study of the following algorithms: Apriori algorithm, Frequent Pattern (FP) Growth algorithm, Rapid Association Rule Mining (RARM), ECLAT algorithm and Associated Sensor Pattern Mining of Data Stream (ASPMS) frequent pattern mining algorithms. This study also focuses on each of the algorithm's strengths and weaknesses for finding patterns among large item sets in database systems.

The structural behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been studied using non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) and ABAQUS software. An interesting feature of this work is the consideration of statically indeterminate SFRC columns. Most of the SFRC specimens studied in the literature are simply supported beams, and information on statically indeterminate columns is sparse. In addition, both axial and lateral loads were considered in order to allow for compression and flexural effects on the columns. The aim of the work was to examine the potential for using steel fibres to reduce the amount of conventional transverse steel reinforcement without compromising ductility and strength requirements. To achieve this, the spacing between shear links was increased while steel fibres were added as a substitute (spacing between shear links increased by 50 and 100 % with fibre volume fraction Vf increased to Vf = 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 %). The numerical model was carefully calibrated against existing experimental data to ensure the reliability of its predictions. Parametric studies were subsequently carried out, which provided insight into how the steel fibres can help reduce the number of conventional shear links.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the dependence of muon rate between 2232−3386 m seawater depth is compared with a parameterisation of the underwater muon flux. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
