Electrical resistivity technique has become a famous alternative tool in subsurface characterization. In the past, several interpretations of electrical resistivity results were unable to be delivered in a strong justification due to lack of appreciation of soil mechanics. Traditionally, interpreters will come out with different conclusion which commonly from qualitative point of view thus creating some uncertainty regarding the result reliability. Most engineers desire to apply any techniques in their project which are able to provide some clear justification with strong, reliable and meaningful results. In order to reduce the problem, this study presents the influence of basic physical properties of soil due to the electrical resistivity value under loose and dense condition. Two different conditions of soil embankment model were tested under electrical resistivity test and basic geotechnical test. It was found that the electrical resistivity value (ERV, ρ) was highly influenced by the variations of soil basic physical properties (BPP) with particular reference to moisture content (w), densities (ρbulk/dry), void ratio (e), porosity (η) and particle grain fraction (d) of soil. Strong relationship between ERV and BPP can be clearly presents such as ρ ∞ 1/w, ρ ∞ 1/ρbulk/dry, ρ ∞ e and ρ ∞ η. This study therefore contributes a means of ERV data interpretation using BPP in order to reduce ambiguity of ERV result and interpretation discussed among related persons such as geophysicist, engineers and geologist who applied these electrical resistivity techniques in subsurface profile assessment.

For software systems that process and manage sensitive information, compliance with laws has become not an option but a necessity. Analysing relevant laws and aligning them with the system requirements is necessary for attaining compliance issues. But analyzing laws within the context of software system requirements is a difficult task, mainly because the concepts used in legal texts are different compared to the concepts used in requirements engineering. This paper contributes to that direction. In particular it presents a process to model and analyse laws and regulations and to support the elicitation of security requirements based on the relevant legal and system context. Finally a case study is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper motivates and sets out a framework for a high-level approach to software component integration. The framework builds on the concept of SaaS (Software as a Service) and uses a service ontology for the annotation of software components with formal specifications. The ontology is used to instruct interoperability between software components through a unified API interface. The impetus for this approach is to provision for smooth integration, management and scalability in a collaborative and distributed development environment. © 2012 Crown Copyright.

Software design flaws account for 50% software security vulnerability today. As attacks on vulnerable software continue to increase, the demand for secure software is also increasing thereby putting software developers under more pressure. This is especially true for those developers whose primary aim is to produce their software quickly under tight deadlines in order to release it into the market early. While there are many tools focusing on implementation problems during software development lifecycle (SDLC), this does not provide a complete solution in resolving software security problems. Therefore designing software with security in mind will go a long way in developing secure software. In this paper some of the current approaches used in integrating security at the design level of SDLC are discussed briefly and a new method of evaluating software design using neural network is presented. With the aid of the proposed neural network tool, this research found out that software design scenarios can be matched to attack patterns that identify the security flaws in the design scenarios. The result of performance of the neural network is presented in this paper. © 2012 IEEE.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

This paper provides a study of the main stator thermal barrier of an inner-rotor cylindrical brushless permanent magnet (BPM) synchronous servomotor with a concentrated winding configuration. Operating synchronous servomotors over continuous periods requires efficient thermal distribution of heat within the motor and also efficient dissipation of heat away from the motor. This is necessary to ensure that motors are running at cooler temperatures and hence provide optimum overall performance and better operating characteristics. Problems which may result if this is not achieved include demagnetising of the permanent magnets, burn-out of the windings, localised hot-spots and a consequent reduction in the operating life of the motor. Optimum performance and high efficiency requires investigation of the numerous machine parameters which necessitates a model that can be used to interpret how the characteristics interact and affect the output performance. The two motors used for this investigation were 12/10 slot/pole servomotors with concentrated winding configurations. Each servomotor was loaded and run up to the winding reference temperature at different speeds. The temperatures of the motor body parts for different wall insulation papers were recorded and compared with predicted values obtained from data using Motor-CAD software and an analytical model. Analysis and test results have been provided of the servomotor performance and thermal conductivity for two different main wall insulation materials.

Different logotypes represent significant cues for video annotations. A combination of temporal and spatial segmentation methods can be used for logo extraction from various video contents. To achieve this segmentation, pixels with low variation of intensity over time are detected. Static backgrounds can become spurious parts of these logos. This paper offers a new way to use several segmentations of logos to learn new logo models from which noise has been removed. First, we group segmented logos of similar appearances into different clusters. Then, a model is learned for each cluster that has a minimum number of members. This is done by applying a linear inverse diffusion filter to all logos in each cluster. Our experiments demonstrate that this filter removes most of the noise that was added to the logo during segmentation and it successfully copes with misclassified logos that have been wrongly added to a cluster.

The last decade has seen a lot of effort been put into place to integrate security into software during software development lifecycle (SDLC) in order to build software more securely. With the increase in the number of software attacks and vulnerabilities, most of the current approaches used during design and development of software to integrate security into software during SDLC require the involvement of security experts. However, due to the knowledge gap between the security experts and the software developers, the success of integrating security into software remains a daunting task. Here we propose a tool based on Neural Network approach for evaluating software design and development by simulation and matching possible attack patterns to the design. Any positive match in the results shows vulnerability identified in the design, which can be evaluated by the software developers and the necessary steps are taken to measure and mitigate the risk involved. Therefore security will be integrated into the software as the software is being designed.

This paper presents the design and implementation of distributed arithmetic (DA) architectures of three-dimensional (3-D) Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with hybrid method for medical image compression. Due to the separability property of the multi-dimensional Haar and Daubechies, the proposed architecture has been implemented using a cascade of three N-point one-dimensional (1-D) Haar/Daubechies and two transpose memories for a 3-D volume of N×N×N, suitable for 3-D medical imaging applications. The architectures were synthesised using VHDL and G-code and implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) single board RIO (sbRIO-9632) with Spartan-3 (XC3S2000). Experimental results and an analysis of the area, power consumption, maximum frequency, latency, throughput as well as the subjective test are discussed in this paper.

Being able to recognise everyday activities of daily life provides the opportunity of tracking functional decline among elderly people who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. This paper describes an approach that has been developed for recognising activities of daily life based on a hierarchal structure of plans. While it is logical to envisage that the most common activities will be modelled within a library of plans, it can be impossible to imagine that the library contains plans for every possible hierarchal activity. In order to generalise the activity recognition capability outside the framework of the core activities constructed to support recognition, decision trees are constructed using a well-known induction algorithm during a train period. The motivation of this work is to allow people with Alzheimer's disease to have additional years of independent living before the disease reaches a stage where it becomes incurable.
