For software systems that process and manage sensitive information, compliance with laws has become not an option but a necessity. Analysing relevant laws and aligning them with the system requirements is necessary for attaining compliance issues. But analyzing laws within the context of software system requirements is a difficult task, mainly because the concepts used in legal texts are different compared to the concepts used in requirements engineering. This paper contributes to that direction. In particular it presents a process to model and analyse laws and regulations and to support the elicitation of security requirements based on the relevant legal and system context. Finally a case study is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.

Building Information Modeling realm is expanding with the advent of new technologies, processes and software for architecture, engineering, Construction and Facility Management industry. The importance of robust knowledge sharing between different stakeholders in a project is of highest priority in such scenarios. model diew definitions provides an empirical specification for the implementation of the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) schema by software companies. The objective of this research is to create an ontological framework, which makes the IFC definitions more formal and consistent. A formal specification of IFC entities to create taxonomy of classes and subclasses between them is adopted for this research. Such an approach will make model view specifications unambiguous and reusable thereby reducing the development time of model views. The precast/pre-stressed concrete industry is selected as the domain for the ontology definitions. Case studies developed illustrating the exchange of a fabrication model between architect/engineer, precast detailer and fabricator shows the feasibility of this approach. The outcome of this research provides the mechanism for applications such as modular MVDs, smart and complex querying of building models, making data sharing across applications simpler with limited rework. © 2012 ASCE.

Algorithm-specific, that is, semantic-specific optimizations have been observed to bring significant performance gains, especially for a diverse set of multi/many-core architectures. However, current programming models and compiler technologies for the state-of-the-art architectures do not exploit well these performance opportunities. In this article, we propose a pattern-making methodology that enables algorithm-specific optimizations to be encapsulated into "optimization patterns". Such optimization patterns are expressed in terms of preprocessor directives so that simple annotations can result in significant performance improvements. To validate this new methodology, a framework, named EPOD, is developed to map these directives into the underlying optimization schemes for a particular architecture. It is difficult to create an exact performance model to determine an optimal or near-optimal optimization scheme (including which optimizations to apply and in which order) for a specific application, due to the complexity of applications and architectures. However, it is trackable to build individual optimization components and let compiler developers synthesize an optimization scheme from these components. Therefore, our EPOD framework provides an Optimization Programming Interface (OPI) for compiler developers to define new optimization schemes. Thus, new patterns can be integrated into EPOD in a flexible manner. We have identified and implemented a number of optimization patterns for three representative computer platforms. Our experimental results show that a pattern-guided compiler can outperform the state-of-theart compilers and even achieve performance as competitive as hand-tuned code. Therefore, such a patternmaking methodology represents an encouraging direction for domain experts' experience and knowledge to be integrated into general-purpose compilers. © 2012 ACM.

Security has become an important characteristic for many real-time systems. Due to the lack of enough and stable energy supply in battery-powered embedded systems, one of the foremost challenges is the mismatch between energy and performance requirements of security processing. In this paper, we propose a security-aware and energy-efficient scheduling algorithm that aims at reducing energy consumption while ensuring the real-time and security requirements. Based on the feedback control theory, we employ a feedback unit to keep track of the CPU utilization and manage the security level dynamically. Simulation results show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media.

Traditionally, schools of architecture are not great laboratories to explore the collaborative processes and teamwork that are essential to integrated design and delivery practices as exemplified by Lean Construction. The pre-eminence of the "hero-architect" in the design studio is in direct conflict with methods that can reduce risk and improve the efficiency of the design and construction delivery process. Risk? Efficiency? Delivery Process? ... not to mention Cost Control, Schedule and Constructability, are foreign concepts to the predominant design studio culture. Integrated practices and integrated project delivery are clearly "hot" topics in the design and construction industry today. They are a response to pressures from building owners and developers for more efficient and predictable processes for designing and constructing buildings, and to the increasing availability of advanced digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). Can an institutionally enshrined resistance to this new approach to design and delivery in the Academy be overcome? Should it? These are the questions that institutions that teach design and construction practices are wrestling with all over the country. This paper addresses an approach that allows interdisciplinary teams to apply the basic elements of Integrated Practice and Lean Construction to a real world case study that is designed using a common Building Information Model.

Traveling salesman problem looks simple but it is an important combinatorial problem. This paper proposes a new hybrid scheme to find the shortest distance of tour in which each city is visited exactly one time, with the return back to the starting city. Traveling salesman problem is solved using multilevel graph partitioning approach. Although traveling salesman problem itself is a very difficult problem as it belongs to the NP-Complete problem class, yet one of the best possible solution is proposed using multilevel graph partitioning which also belongs to the NP-Complete problem class. To reduce the complexity, k-mean partitioning algorithm is used which divides the main problem into multiple partitions. Then solving each partition separately and thus finally improving the solution for overall tours by applying Lin Kernighan algorithm. From all of this analysis, an optimal solution is produced which tends to solve travelling salesman problem and could be used in more advance and complex applications.

Most scientific computations serve to apply mathematical operations to a set of preconceived data structures, e.g., matrices, vectors, and grids. In this paper, we use a number of widely used matrix computations from the LINPACK library to demonstrate that complex internal organizations of data structures can severely degrade the effectiveness of compilers optimizations. We then present a data layout oblivious optimization methodology, where by isolating an abstract representation of computations from complex implementation details of their data, we enable these computations to be much more accurately analyzed and optimized through varying state-of-the-art compiler technologies. The paper is based on applying the goals of software and systems engineering curriculum as a part of learning and teaching for an academic degree. The paper also relates to contributions of some of Harlan D. Mills award recipients for software engineering achievement, to address the needs to: i) improve the engineering education in an academic setting, and ii) develop real-life software and system projects. In particular we present the experience of using theory and practice of software engineering education focusing on model and Web based software and systems development from both academic and real life perspective. Hybrid educational methods are applied for student learning that combine class room approach of teaching fundamental theoretical concepts and practice via real world complex projects embedding intelligence in software and systems products. System thinking demanded by modern design philosophies is applied to interlink products, software, and people. Student groups are developing their projects in an interactive and collaborative manner.

Information systems exist in every aspect of our life and our society depends on them enormously. Despite this reliance, these systems are often unreliable, prone to errors, and pose vulnerabilities for potential security attacks. We are often faced with a choice between using a valuable (or even an essential) system, which is not fully trustworthy, or else forgoing the services it provides. Developing a trustworthy software system is a challenging task. The system's overall trustworthiness depends on trust relationships that are usually assumed and not properly analysed during the analysis and design of the system. The lack of appropriate analysis of such trust relationships, or the lack of appropriate justification of relevant trust assumptions, usually results in systems that can potentially fail to fully achieve those functionalities that depend on such trust relationships. In this paper, we present a meta-model for a modelling language that allows developers to capture possible trust relationships and to reason about them. The meta-model includes a set of trust based concepts, which support the development of trustworthy systems. A case study from the UK health care sector is used to illustrate the usefulness of the meta-model.

Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants is high, and the rescue from outside is very difficult, safe and timely evacuation is an important issue under high-rise building fires. Worsely, it is impossible to do experiments for economic, moral, or even legal reasons. In this paper, based on an ACP (artificial systems, computational experiments, parallel excution) approach, a design of an artificial evacuation system for computational experiments research on societies evacuation strategies is proposed. Based on the buildingEXODUS platform, the agent technology is used to build the high-rise building architectures and occupant individuals who have autonomous activities. By using CFAST software, numerical calculation technology is used to build several kinds of fire scenarios. By interactions and influences, an artificial evacuation system can be built. © 2012 IEEE.
