More and more problems were emerged with the development of Beijing's urbanization. One of them is urban heat island (UHI) effect. Our study area is located in the central urban area of Beijing which mainly the area surrounded by the fifth ring road. During our monitoring of the UHI effect using Advance Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data, an urban heat sink was found. This paper focuses on the analysis of this urban heat sink developed in the winter morning of Beijing by detailedly analyzing the subsurface's thermal characteristics. Thermal inertia was used in this paper to identify the subsurface's thermal characteristics. Thermal inertia is a physical parameter representing the ability of a material to conduct and store heat, and in the context of planetary science, it is a measure of the subsurface's ability to store heat during the day and reradiate it during the night. After getting the surface albedo and the land surface temperatures at day and night respectively, the thermal inertia was calculated using a real thermal inertia model. The result shows that the urban area has a bigger thermal inertia than that of the rural area. Which makes the materials in rural area have a rapidly increase in surface temperature then those in the urban area in winter morning which caused the formation of the urban heat sink. © 2008 IEEE.

An effective workload distribution has a prime rule on reducing the total execution time of a parallel application on heterogeneous environments, such as computational grids and heterogeneous clusters. This paper presents two approaches to workload distribution based on analytical models developed to performance prediction of parallel applications, named VRP and VRP-SS. The workload is distributed based on relative performance ratios, obtained by analytical models constructed according to the rules described in the PEMPIs methodology. In the experimental tests we evaluated the strategies and compared them using MPI applications. The results showed the efficiency of our strategies by reducing the total execution time and improving the workload balance.

Drought in sprint is one of the natural disasters that threatens our agriculture development and causes series environment, social and economical consequences. Remote sensing technology becomes possible to rapidly monitor soil moisture in regional scale by combining remote sensing and Geophysical Information Systems technology. In this paper, a thermal inertia map was obtained from MODIS 1B data on April 16, 2004 using thermal inertia model in Northern China Plain covering Latitude from 37°N to 39.5°N and Longitude from 115°E to 117.5°E. A soil moisture map was obtained based on the relationship between thermal inertia and soil moisture. And a distributive map of drought was obtained by dense slicing and some analyses based on the relationship between ranks of drought and soil moisture were performed. The drought map shows that most of the studied area was in a normal condition except some small part of the northern and western eastern was in a slightly drought. The actual drought information obtained from the official Website of Beijing Meteorological Bureau indicates that it was in a normal condition of soil moisture in Northern China Plain in the first ten days of April. The result derived from MODIS data using thermal inertia model is in consistent with the actual situation. It indicates that it is an effective way to monitor regional drought condition by means of deriving soil moisture using MODIS data. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we presented a method to improve structural modeling based on conserved domain clusters and structure-anchored alignments. We first constructed a template library of structural clusters for all conserved sequence domains. Then, for each cluster, we built the profile using the structure and sequence information. Finally we use the profile and structural alignments as anchors to increase the alignment accuracy between a query and its templates. Our preliminary results show that this method can be used for the partial prediction for a majority of known protein sequences with better qualities. Copyright 2007 ACM.

In this paper we develop a method for measuring the design process and correlate it with the assessment of the design outcome. We used linkography - a technique used in analyzing design protocols - which is reported to reveal the quality of design ideas and to capture the interconnectivity of ideas in the design process. Previous studies found that Shannon's entropy as a measure of a linkograph might indicate design outcomes. This paper reports on an empirical verification that design outcomes can be correlated to the entropic interpretations of a linkograph. Experimental data from protocol studies of six designers performing two similar design tasks in two different conditions were analysed. In one condition the designers were blindfolded during designing, and then given a relatively short time to draw their design at the end of the session. In the other condition the designers were allowed to sketch. We focus on the three highest scored and the three lowest scored design sessions. Their verbalization during the design session were segmented and coded to produce linkographs. The entropy and the change of entropy over time of these linkographs were studied in relation to the design outcomes. Our results demonstrate that entropy measurement of linkographs provides a way of to study design protocols and show that the design outcome is more related to the rate of change of entropy than to the entropy alone.

This paper explores using Shannon's entropy of information to measure linkographs of 1.2 design sessions that involved six architects in two different experimental conditions. The aim is to find a quantitative tool to interpret the linkographs. This study examines if the differences in the design processes and the design outcomes can be reflected in the entropie interpretations. The results show that the overall entropy of one design condition is slightly higher than the other. Further, there are indications that the change of entropy might reflect design outcomes. The Digital Phoenix project is a multiyear project aimed at developing a realistic digital representation of the Phoenix metropolitan area through space and time that can be experienced in Arizona State University's Decision Theater. A significant objective of this project is to create an environment for querying, researching, and visualizing critical issues confronting a rapidly urbanizing area about urban sustainability. By creating a multidimensional virtual model of Phoenix from a variety of data sources, we can visualize patterns of growth and development, as well as their consequences emerging across the continuums of space and time. The modeling of future environments will enable the assessment of policy scenarios and guide desired future urban-environmental patterns. A digitally constructed model of the city will also allow us to discover what Phoenix could have been like, starting with historical data as the basis for projecting to the present and into the future.

The detection of oil spill is very important for the oil exploration. Remote sensing technology is one of the methods to detect the potential oil basin, especially in a large region. High resolution satellite images can be used as an approach of early oil exploration because its visualized, continuous and macroscopical characteristics. In this paper, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data were used to detect the possible oil regions in the Yinggehai area of Hainan Province, China from thermal anomaly including sea surface temperature and apparent thermal inertia. By comparing with the drilling materials, our results show that the area with oil spill has a lower temperature and higher thermal inertia values than the surrounding areas. It indicates that our derived sea surface temperature and apparent thermal inertia anomaly just reflect the above mentioned status and the method can be used to detect the potential oil basin.
