The detection of oil spill is very important for the oil exploration. Remote sensing technology is one of the methods to detect the potential oil basin, especially in a large region. High resolution satellite images can be used as an approach of early oil exploration because its visualized, continuous and macroscopical characteristics. In this paper, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data were used to detect the possible oil regions in the Yinggehai area of Hainan Province, China from thermal anomaly including sea surface temperature and apparent thermal inertia. By comparing with the drilling materials, our results show that the area with oil spill has a lower temperature and higher thermal inertia values than the surrounding areas. It indicates that our derived sea surface temperature and apparent thermal inertia anomaly just reflect the above mentioned status and the method can be used to detect the potential oil basin.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a scalable run-time system and an optimizing compiler for Unified Parallel C (UPC). An experimental evaluation on BlueGene/L®, a distributed-memory machine, demonstrates that the combination of the compiler with the runtime system produces programs with performance comparable to that of efficient MPI programs and good performance scalability up to hundreds of thousands of processors. Our runtime system design solves the problem of maintaining shared object consistency efficiently in a distributed memory machine. Our compiler infrastructure simplifies the code generated for parallel loops in UPC through the elimination of affinity tests, eliminates several levels of indirection for accesses to segments of shared arrays that the compiler can prove to be local, and implements remote update operations through a lower-cost asynchronous message. The performance evaluation uses three well-known benchmarks - HPC RandomAccess, HPC STREAM and NAS CG - to obtain scaling and absolute performance numbers for these benchmarks on up to 131072 processors, the full BlueGene/L machine. These results were used to win the HPC Challenge Competition at SC05 in Seattle WA, demonstrating that PGAS languages support both productivity and performance. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

Event sequence arises naturally in many applications. Episode mining can discovery the knowledge hidden in the event sequence. Currently, the most influential algorithm for episode mining is WINEPI. However, it is likely to suffer from the tendency of generating too many of candidate episodes. In this paper, a novel algorithm named DRE for mining frequent episodes is presented. It studied the conditions for the events which can be pruned from the database, so the size of database is reduced gradually. The performance of algorithm DRE was evaluated and compared with WINEPI algorithm. The results demonstrate that the DRE has better performance

The rapid growth of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) has enabled dramatic changes in the ways knowledge-based enterprises work. Work has become distributed across geographical locations and time zones. In addition enterprises have been going through massive transformations of business processes and associated organizational structures. The transformation initiatives have yielded several challenges in creating productive work environments across a mobile and virtual enterprise. Many enterprises are interested in methods and tools for analysis of workplace design and space acquisition investments. This paper summarizes a data collection framework to explore linkages and trade offs between ICT and workspaces in knowledge-based enterprises.

Traditionally, architecture in its design process employs physical matter, requires physical presence and relies on real world environment using conventional methods of 2D depictions such as paper and pen or 3D representations such as physical models and communicates design ideas in verbal or text-based form. The conventional design process, for example an interior design, a residential house, a commercial complex or even urban design projects, follows the same hierarchy of activities. Efforts are made to the satisfaction of both parties to give the ideas of a physical shape through sketches, drafts and models which may take weeks, even months. Finally the project gets its final shape in a working drawing, 3D visualisation or model making. This process is time consuming and somewhat redundant. In recent years technology has offered architects a new tool - the virtual environment. Architects use virtual environment increasingly as device of communication and presentation of design intensions. Virtual environment enables users to interact in real-time with design but unfortunately has not been used widely in the process of architectural design. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between present design process and the emerging technology of virtual reality, establish a relationship between the two and its influence on architecture to form a new translated design process and communication, an interface between architect and client.

The combustion noise of a domestic heating boiler has been investigated so that a Virtual Acoustic Prototype of a boiler system may be developed. In order to construct a Virtual Acoustic Prototype it is necessary to separate the system into active source components and passive structural components. In particular, the source strength of the burner combustion noise, independent of the combustion chamber geometry, and the passive Acoustic Conductivity Function of the combustion chamber have been investigated. In characterising the burner it was necessary to determine the minimum set of components which could be considered an invariant source, independent of the surrounding structure. This was achieved by measuring the sound of a plate burner, typical of those used in a UK domestic heating boiler, fitted within a number of idealised combustion chambers consisting of rectangular section tubes of varying length. It was found that the completely unenclosed burner could not be considered an invariant source and that some part of the surrounding enclosure must also be included in order to obtain invariance over a number of idealised combustion chamber lengths. Transfer functions of the transmission path from the flame-front to the far-field reception point were determined for the idealised combustion chambers using reciprocal measurement techniques and these were used to determine the limits of invariance of the burner source strength. Practical problems encountered when measuring source strengths and transfer functions of components which operate at elevated temperatures are discussed.

In the absence of absolute localization tools such as GPS, a robot can still successfully navigate by conducting Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). All SLAM algorithms to date can only be applied in one environment at a time. In this paper we propose to extend SLAM to multi-environments. In SmartSLAM, the robot first classifies its entourage using environment recognition code and then performs SLAM using landmarks that are appropriate for its surrounding milieu. One thousand images of various indoor and outdoor environments were collected and used as training data for a three-layered feedforward backpropagation neural network. This neural network was then tested on two sets of query images of indoor environments and another two sets of outdoor environments, yielding 83% and 95% correct classification rates for the indoor images and 80% and 79% success rates for the outdoor images. © 2004 IEEE.

Finite element simulations are deterministic and this causes problems when trying to model something that has inherent variation such as sheet metal forming. This paper develops a shape error metric that describes the accuracy between empirical data and a finite element simulation of the same process for a variety of process parameter levels. That is, we maintain the same finite element model parameters (such as, number of elements) while varying the process parameters of the simulation to match the experimental situation. The metric has been devised to give a measure of how well the simulation tracks the variation of sheet metal forming process. The proposed metric is essential to the development of methods to investigate process variation using finite element modeling. It may be the case that some finite element models are accurate, but they are not necessarily robust to process parameter *** metric was developed using two sets of “U” channels: one set of empirical channels; and one set of simulated channels from ABAQUS. Each channel in the empirical set must have a corresponding channel in the simulated set that was simulated using the same process parameters values. The empirical channels were modelled by the Active Shape Model (ASM) (Cootes 1995), which is an object recognition technique in computer vision. The ASM approach uses principal component analysis to determine the major modes of shape variation. Furthermore, the shape metric can also be used to find which process parameter is the most significant with respect to the shape error.

Reliable multicast protocols are an important class of protocols for reliably disseminating information from a sender to multiple receivers in the face of node and link failures. A tree-based reliable multicast protocol (TRAM) provides scalable reliable multicast by grouping receivers in hierarchical repair groups and using a selective acknowledgment mechanism. We present an improvement to TRAM to minimize the resource utilization at intermediate hosts and to localize the effect of slow or malicious receivers on normal receivers. We present an evaluation of TRAM and TRAM++ on a campus-wide WAN without errors and with message errors. The evaluation brings out that, given a constraint on the buffer availability at intermediate hosts, TRAM++ can tolerate the constraint at the expense of increasing the end-to-end latency for the normal receivers by only 3.2% compared to TRAM in error-free cases. When slow or faulty receivers are present, TRAM++ is able to provide the same uninterrupted quality of service to the normal nodes while localizing the effect of the faulty ones without incurring any additional memory overhead.
