The output of the sheet metal forming process is subject to much variation. This paper develops a method to measure shape variation in channel forming and relate this back to the corresponding process parameter levels of the manufacturing set-up to create an inverse model. The shape variation in the channels is measured using a modified form of the point distribution model (also known as the active shape model). This means that channels can be represented by a weighting vector of minimal linear dimension that contains all the shape variation information from the average formed channel. The inverse models were created using classifiers that related the weighting vectors to the process parameter levels for the blank holder force (BHF), die radii (DR) and tool gap (TG) of the parameters. Several classifiers were tested: linear, quadratic Gaussian and artificial neural networks. The quadratic Gaussian classifiers were the most accurate and the most consistent type of classifier over all the parameters.

The growing number of applications for 3D graphics and imaging systems in the mass market requires the customized approach to the design of high-performance 3D graphics and imaging system architectures. That fact coupled with the strong trends to industrial standardization of graphics API, such as OpenGL, leads to enhanced portability for imaging and graphics applications. The progress on the hardware support of API functionality gives a real possibility to use a top-down approach in the design of custom graphics/imaging systems based on the mixed hardware/software implementation of the OpenGL architecture. Software simulation is a relatively cheap and fast way for initial graphics architecture template development and evaluation to acquire the structure and parameters that can be used later for HDL elaboration and simulation. This paper discusses a 3D graphics and imaging system architecture model implementation based on OpenGL API hardware support simulation. The object-oriented approach has been used for this development of analytic and software models simulating hardware units on different stages of the graphics pipeline. The Interactive Imaging System architecture Composer has been developed in this project for fast run-time simulation management, data acquisition and interpretation. The expandable set of architecture templates uses a reconfigurable shared library of "virtual hardware units" simulating the different hardware structures for graphics and image processing.

Many construction organizations have misunderstood the reality that total quality management (TQM) based on continuous improvement requires a commitment to learning and that essentially it is the means to a learning organization. The paper argues that if the construction industry is to improve its performance and competitiveness, then there needs to be a cultural and behavioural shift in the mind-set of practitioners, academics and the professional institutions. Their focus should be on re-thinking their approaches to TQM so that learning becomes the norm. It is demonstrated that a relationship exists between the constructs of TQM, organizational learning, and the learning organization. Based on a review of existing literature, a conceptual model for a learning organization in construction is presented and discussed. The paper proposes some refinements to the concept of the learning organization, directed at clearly positioning the critical focus of learning at the organizational level in construction.

This paper investigates new zerotree structures for image compression. The objective of this research is to make the tree structures flexible enough to fit themselves to any significant coefficients within image subbands. In this fashion, a higher compression ratio can be achieved. The approach discussed utilizes predetermined tree structures corresponding to the natural directionality of the separable wavelet transformation. Without increasing the coder's complexity and side rate, the set partitioning in a hierarchical trees (SPIHT) codec proposed by Said and Pearlman (see IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, vol.6, no.3, p.243-50, 1996) is modified for testing these structures. The results demonstrate some significant improvement especially for highly horizontal and vertical texture images.

A subband coding system which dynamically adapts to the local orientation of image features is investigated. In particular, the re-orientation scheme proposed by Taubman and Zakhor (1994) is used in conjunction with a separable octave-band subband decomposition. This is then followed by efficient coding techniques such as embedded zero trees, trellis coded quantization, and stack-run coding. The coded images demonstrate the superior subjective performance of the proposed methods.

Reports analysis and simulation studies for the co-ordinated control of multiple manipulators on a free swimming underwater robot. The control objective is to perform an open loop control of the end effector position of one of the arms. A formulation is derived for both the inverse dynamics and inverse kinematics of an underwater robot with multiple manipulators, having a redundancy in degrees of freedom (DOF) of motion, in the presence of external generalised forces. The method is applied to a model of an underwater robot comprising a 6 DOF mission arm and a further pair of 2 DOF paddling arms used for stabilisation in a free swimming condition. The numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of the presented co-ordinated control method with the assistance of the stabilising arms.

Test and Evaluation have become paramount in today's Department of Defense acquisition process. Therefore, the U. S. Navy requires both private and public facilities to accomplish the final goals of the “Fly before Buy” concept. Such a facility exists at the Naval Coastal Systems Laboratory (NCSL); an integral part of the Chief of Naval Material's, Director of Navy Laboratories organization. This paper briefly addresses the Laboratory, its mission, and its history. This is followed by an in—depth facilities overview in order to create an understanding of the slow but steady evolution of NCSL's unique fixed facilities. These facilities, when coupled to the local natural environment, provide a unique in situ test and evaluation capability which is unequalled in the United States for assessing seagoing coastal systems. Of prime consideration is the Range Date Acquisition Center (RADAC) and Its ancillary subsystems for tracking, environmental monitoring, communications, and post run analysis. The paper is concluded with a discussion of both past and present use of the aforementioned facilities with an emphasis on user acceptance and future potential growth.
