Urban geometry as a climate adaptation strategy for enhancing outdoor thermal comfort in a hot desert climate

This study aimed to assess the impact of varying street canyon geometries on outdoor thermal comfort in two Egyptian cities with distinct climates: Aswan, located in the southern desert region, and Alexandria, on the northern coast. The design of urban street canyons in Egypt often neglects the country's diverse climatic regions. The investigation focused on four height-to-width aspect ratios and four principal street orientations in the two *** data, ENVI-met microclimate software, and Ray Man were utilized to analyze the impact of hypothesized scenarios on heat stress in the studied street canyons. Outdoor thermal comfort was evaluated using the physiologically equivalent temperature(PET). The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of aspect ratio and orientation in the respective cities. In Aswan, the aspect ratio had a greater influence on comfort, with aspect ratio of 2.5 providing the most favorable conditions and a ratio of 1 resulting in the least comfortable ***, in Alexandria, the street canyon orientation proved more advantageous, where a northwest-southeast orientation produced a significant decrease(10 K) in PET compared to the least favorable orientation. These results highlight the importance of considering local climatic factors in the design of urban street canyons to effectively mitigate outdoor heat stress.

This study aims to derive the ideal projects and rewords for architectural experience rewords from reword reword-based crowdfunding for architectural preservation, based on the contents of the rewords and the state of support, leading to sustainable preservation activities that do not end with fundraising alone. The findings indicate that incorporating rewords that are highly flexible and accessible to a broad range of individuals, as well as those that are highly unique, can attract significant support and foster a high level of interest in architecture. © 2025 architectural Institute of Japan. Influence of pile-raft connection on lateral performance of combined pile-raft foundations adjacent to tunnelling

An Improved Whale Optimization Algorithm for Global Optimization and Realized Volatility Prediction

A novel AC turning on behavior model based on survival analysis

Occupant control behavior is a key factor affecting the energy consumption of building air-conditioners(ACs).The operating behavior of ACs and their models in office buildings have been investigated ***,although the thermal sensation of occupants is affected by their previous thermal experience,few researchers have attempted to incorporate this effect quantitatively in models of AC turning on *** considering the cumulative effect may result in inaccurate ***,in this study,a survival model is proposed to describe AC turning on behavior in office buildings under the cumulative dimension of *** on a dataset containing environmental parameters and occupant behavior information,as well as considering occupants entering a room as the starting event and turning on an air-conditioner as the end event,the endurance time before an AC is turned on is investigated,and a survival model is used to predict the probability of the AC turning on due to environmental *** on a switch curve,confusion matrix,and tolerance–time curve,the prediction results of the survival model are analyzed and *** results show that a tolerance temperature of 29℃and a tolerance duration setting of 1 h can effectively model the turning on behavior of the *** addition,based on comparison results of different models,the survival model presents a more stable switching curve,a higher F1 score,and a tolerance curve that is more similar to *** tolerance durations,as well as static and dynamic tolerance temperature settings,are considered to optimize the ***,the AC energy consumption is calculated under the survival model and the traditional Weibull *** results were compared with measurement,and the survival model verified the improvement effect of prediction accuracy by 8%than the Weibull *** considering the time-transformed accumulation of physical environmental factors,the accuracy of AC turnin

High value-added utilization of desulfurized building gypsum as self-leveling mortar: the comprehensive effect of cement

The utilization of desulfurized building gypsum as raw material for gypsum-based self-leveling mortar (GSL) is limited by its low strength and poor water resistance. The objective of this study is to enhance comprehensive properties of GSL and prepare qualified desulfurized building gypsum-based self-leveling mortar that can be effectively applied in practical engineering projects. The influence of cement on water consumption rate of initial fluidity (W/M ratio), fluidity, setting time, mechanical strength, and water resistance of GSL were evaluated. Additionally, rheological parameter, heat of hydration, crystal morphology, and pore structure were also analyzed. Cement significantly improved the fluidity of slurry. Moreover, the compressive strength and softening coefficient of GSL reached 20.6 MPa and 0.56 at 10% cement, respectively. Furthermore, cement reduced the 30-min-fluidity loss and improved fludity by reducing the yield stress and increasing the plastic viscosity of screed. The transformation of hydration kinetics of GSL could be due to Ca2+ and OH− released by cement, thus resulting in the shortening of initial setting time and the prolongation of the interval between initial and final setting time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that CSH gel and AFt crystal would generate on the surface of CaSO4·2H2O crystal, making the structure more compact. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) indicated that cement greatly reduced the porosity through the water reduction effect in the early stage and continuous hydration in the later stage. The continuous hydration of cement also increased the shrinkage rate. This work was expected to provide reference for promoting the application of desulfurized building gypsum as the high value-added screed. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Machine learning model for predicting long-term energy consumption in buildings

The rapid growth in the construction sector has led to increased energy consumption and carbon emissions. Calculating energy usage and emissions is essential to energy security and promoting sustainable sector development. Therefore, the study objective is to investigate the utilazation of machine learning algorithm to predict long-term energy consumption in buildings sector, aiming to improve sustainable design and energy optimization, via the implementation of three machine learning models, XGBoost, Support Vector Regression, and Long-Short-Term Memory networks, to predict energy consumption. These models are adept at capturing complex interactions between building characteristics, environmental factors, and energy patterns. Although previous studies have explored various machine learning techniques for energy efficiency, limited research links these models to practical applications in building performance simulation. Furthermore, there is a lack of comparative evaluation of advanced machine learning models such as XGBoost, Support Vector Regression, and Long-Short-Term Memory to predict the energy consumption of building envelopes, particularly in hot climates such as the UAE. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a detailed comparison of these models against alternative approaches mentioned in the literature. The findings position Long-Short-Term Memory as a transformative force in predictive modeling, demonstrating exceptional precision with an R-squared value of 0.993 and a Mean Squared Error of 0.004. In contrast, Support Vector Regression and XGBoost showed limited predictive capabilities, with R-squared values of 0.462 and 0.94, respectively. This study establishes a solid data-driven foundation for architects and engineers to inform decisions on energy-efficient building designs, advocating Long-Short-Term Memory as the superior model for predicting energy performance. © The Author(s) 2025.

Bibliometric analysis and literature review of occupant thermal comfort in naturally ventilated buildings (1995–2021)

This paper presents the global research landscape and scientific progress on occupant thermal comfort in naturally ventilated buildings (OTC-NVB). Despite the growing interest in the area, comprehensive papers on the current status and future developments on the topic are currently lacking. Hence, the publication trends, bibliometric analysis, and systematic literature review of the published documents on OTC-NVB were examined. The search query "Thermal Comfort" AND "Natural Ventilation" AND "Buildings" was designed and executed to recover related documents on the topic from the Elsevier Scopus database. Results showed that 976 documents (comprising articles, conference papers, reviews, etc.) were published on the topic from 1995 to 2021. Further analysis showed that 97.34% of the publications were published in the English language. Richard *** Dear (University of Sydney, Australia) is the most prolific researcher on OTC-NVB research, while Energy and Buildings has the highest publications. Bibliometric analysis showed high publications, citations, keywords, and co-authorships among researchers, whereas the most occurrent keywords are ventilation, natural ventilation, thermal comfort, buildings, and air conditioning. Systematic literature review demonstrated that OTC-NVB research has progressed significantly from empirical to computer-based studies involving complex mathematical equations, programs, or software like artificial neural networks (ANN) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In general, OTC-NVB research findings indicate that physiological, social, and environmental factors considerably influence OTC in NVBs. Future studies will likely employ artificial intelligence or building performance simulation (BPS) tools to examine relationships between OTC and indoor air/environmental quality, human behavior, novel clothing, or building materials in NVBs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2023.

VISUAL PERCEPTION AND ALERTNESS IN DEPENDENCE ON CCT FOR LED LIGHTING IN CLASSROOM1

Classroom lighting significantly affects student performance and productivity, as well as visual comfort and daytime alertness. The spectral distribution of LED light sources is different from that of traditional light sources, it may affect the individual’s performance and feelings. The aim of this study was to investigate how correlated colour temperature (CCT) of LED lighting affects the alertness and visual perception of college students. Initially, the impact of different correlated colour temperatures (4000 K, 5000 K, 6500 K) on subjective alertness was studied, and questionnaires was used to assess visual comfort by visual-perceptual experiments. The results show that increasing correlated colour temperature helps to improve subjective alertness and visual comfort in a appropriately rang, but a too high correlated colour temperature levels may increase visual fatigue and affect comfort of individuals. The participants were more comfortable at 5000 K than at high and low correlated colour temperatures. This found under-standing aiding the advancement of high-quality lighting environments prioritizing visual health and work efficiency. © 2025, LLC Editorial of Journal ""Light Technik"".
