Asymptotic and interval observer for quality monitoring in drinking water distribution systems is derived in this paper. It produces robust interval bounds on the estimated state variables of the water quality. Solving two differential equations generates the bounds; hence the numerical efficiency is sufficient for on-line monitoring of the water quality. The observer is applied to example water network and tight bounds-estimates are obtained.

Most of industrial processes are nonlinear, not stationary, and dynamical with at least few different time scales in their internal dynamics and hardly measured states. A biological wastewater treatment plant falls into this category. The paper considers modelling such processes for monitorning and control purposes by using State - Space Wavelet Neural Networks (SSWN). The modelling method is illustrated based on bioreactors of the wastewater treatment plant. The learning algorithms and basis function (multidimensional wavelets) are also proposed. The simulation results based on real data record are presented.

This paper deals with the problem of robust fault estimation for uncertain time delay Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models. The aim of this study is to design a delay dependent fault estimator ensuring a prescribed H infin performance level for the fault estimation error, irrespective of the uncertainties and the time delays. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a robust fault estimator are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Membership functions'(MFs) characteristics are incorporated into the fault estimator design to reduce the conservativeness of neglecting these characteristics

Repetitive processes propagate information in two independent directions and are of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard (termed ID here) or 2D systems theory. Here we give new results on the design of physically based feedforward/feedback control laws to achieve desired performance and disturbance decoupling in the sense defined in the body of the paper. The new results are for the case when only output (as opposed to state) information is used to activate the control law

Both the fractal dimension (FD) and the multifractal dimensions (MFD) have been widely used to describe natural textures in image processing community. However, due to the essential difference between the fractal reality of digital images and the mathematical fractal model, most FD/MFD estimation algorithms intrinsically produce less accurate results. In this paper, the idea of fractal signature is adopted and extended to the morphological multifractal estimation. As a result, a novel texture descriptor, namely the local morphological multifractal signatures (LMMS), is proposed to characterize the local scaling property of textured images. The LMMS depict the behavior of the morphological MFD over a wide range of spatial scales. The proposed LMMS feature, together with the fractal signature and the morphological MFD, has been applied to the discrimination of Brodatz textures. The comparison results demonstrate that our LMMS feature can differentiate natural textures more effectively

Wireless networked embedded systems are becoming increasingly important in a wide area of technical fields. In this tutorial paper we present recent results on the design of these systems and their use in control applications, that have been developed within the project Reconfigurable Ubiquitous Networked Embedded Systems (RUNES). RUNES is a European Integrated Project with the aim to control complexity in networked embedded systems by developing robust and scalable middleware systems. New components for control under varying network conditions are discussed for the RUNES architecture. The paper highlights how the complexity of the closed-loop system is increased, due to additional disturbances introduced by the communication system: additional delays, jitter, data rate limitations, packet losses, etc. Experimental work on integration test beds that demonstrates these results is presented, together with motivating links to the RUNES disaster relief tunnel scenario

This paper presents the basic idea and the mathematical formulation of the delayed feedback control (DFC) methodology. Stability analysis including the well-known odd number limitation of the DFC is reviewed. Some new advances in characterization of the limitation of the DFC are presented. Finally, some open problems in this research field are discussed.

This paper studies the noise reduction design problem for oversampled filter banks (FBs) with perfect reconstruction (PR) constraint. Both the optimal design and worst case design are considered, where the former method caters for the noise with known power spectral density (PSD) and the latter one for the noise with unknown PSD. Explicit formulae involving only algebraic Riccati equation and matrix manipulations are provided for the general (IIR or FIR) oversampled PR FBs

In this paper, we present an explicit and numerically efficient formulae to construct a tight (paraunitary) FB frame from a given un-tight (non-paraunitary) FB frame. The derivation uses the well developed techniques from modern control theory, which results in the unified formulae for generic IIR and FIR FBs. These formulae involve only algebraic matrix manipulations and can be computed efficiently and reliably without the approximation required in the existing literature
