Sensorless control of PMSM Drives Using Octant Newton-Raphson Method and Reduced-Order EKF Considering Speed Reversal and Noise

For back electromotive force-based sensorless control in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives, the conventional phase-locked loop (PLL) exhibits a ±π position estimation error during speed reversal. This paper presents an octant Newton-Raphson method (ONRM) based PLL, which employs a newly defined objective function and a position octant method. It not only ensures the position estimation converges correctly during speed reversal but also improves dynamic performance compared to the conventional PLL. The applicability condition of the ONRM in the presence of noise is also analyzed in detail. Subsequently, due to the noise sensitivity of the ONRM, a reduced-order extended Kalman filter is designed to filter out the non-Gaussian noise in the position estimation while simultaneously estimating the speed. The effectiveness of the proposed sensorless control scheme is verified on a 1.5 kW PMSM drive platform. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Depth-free view synthesis from diffusion models for monocular 3D detector in autonomous driving

One of the key problems in 3D object detection is to reduce the accuracy gap between methods based on LiDAR sensors and those based on monocular cameras. A recent monocular-based 3D object detection method using Pseudo-Stereo representation has demonstrated significant capabilities. However, three problems have been discovered in existing practices: (1) relying on a high-performance monocular depth estimator, (2) the generated image suffering from visual holes, deformations, and artifacts, and (3) being difficult to be compatible with geometry-based stereo detectors. In this work, we propose a novel pseudo-stereo 3D detection framework without depth estimation, called PS-SVDM. This framework utilizes a diffusion model to generate a high-quality virtual right view from a left image to mimic the stereo camera signal. With this representation, we can apply various existing stereo image-based detection algorithms. Afterwards, we further explore the application of PS-SVDM in depth-free stereo 3D detection, and the final framework is compatible with most stereo detectors. Experiments conducted on the KITTI-3D Car category show that our method can achieve state-of the-art performance among published monocular 3D detectors. Dear Editor,This letter is concerned with stability analysis and stabilization design for sampled-data based load frequency control(LFC) systems via a data-driven method. By describing the dynamic behavior of LFC systems based on a data-based representation, a stability criterion is derived to obtain the admissible maximum sampling interval(MSI) for a given controller and a design condition of the PI-type controller is further developed to meet the required MSI. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified by a case study.

Energy-based Swing-up control of the Soft Inverted Pendulum with Affine Curvature

This paper studies the energy-based swing-up control of an underactuated soft inverted pendulum, a template model of soft robots with its base attached to the ground and its curvature described by an affine function. First, this paper presents a necessary and sufficient condition for the linear controllability of the robot around its upright equilibrium point (UEP). Next, without any constraint on its stiffness, this paper derives an energy-based controller to swing up the robot to its UEP, where the pendulum is in its upright position, and provides a necessary and sufficient condition such that the controller is free of singular points. Then, this paper characterizes the patterns of closed-loop equilibrium points with respect to the physical parameters of the pendulum and the gains of the derived controller, and analyzes the closed-loop motion corresponding to the special case in which desired convergence of the total mechanical energy is achieved. In such case, this paper reveals that the UEP is generically the unique closed-loop equilibrium point, and provides clarification regarding its stability. These results serve as guidelines of the design of soft robots and the tuning of control gains to achieve the desired performance of the swing-up control. Finally, this paper conducts numerical simulations to validate the theoretical results and to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the derived controller in swinging up the robot to its UEP from initial states far from the UEP, even under the challenging condition of very low stiffness. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2025.

Noncontact Video-Based Vital Signs Continuous Monitor for Unconstrained Conscious Rodents

Animal experiments should minimize pain and discomfort and maximize animal welfare to satisfy the experimental animal 3R principle. The quality of vital signs monitor results collected from conscious and stress-free rodents is superior, ensuring experimental data’s reliability, accuracy, and scientificity. This work proposes a noncontact video-based vital signs continuous monitoring method for unconstrained conscious rodents. First, rodents are tracked using keypoint detection, and regions of interest (ROI) on the rodents are selected based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution of vital signs. Second, corner motion within the ROI region is tracked to synthesize skin pulsations, from which respiratory signals are extracted. Finally, a method is proposed to eliminate the influence of respiratory harmonics, thereby removing respiratory interference and extracting the heart rate (HR). Four rats and four mice were used to measure the performance of the proposed method. This work is the first to use a camera to continuously monitor the HR of unrestrained and conscious rodents. Compared with the ground truth [semi-implantable electrocardiogram (ECG)], the relative HR error was 1.86% \pm ~0.82 % and 1.20% \pm ~0.33 % for rats and mice, respectively. This method is used for unconstrained conscious rodents and has high applicability, allowing it to be used in various experimental environments and conditions. At the same time, this work contributes to the development of new methods for continuously and objectively evaluating animal welfare, thereby promoting the development of modern biomedical and ethical research. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Attention-Modulated Feature Fusion Neural Network for Inverse Modeling of Microwave Filters

Inverse modeling is extensively applied in the design and tuning of microwave filters (MFs). Inverse models (IMs) take the features extracted from the high-dimensional electromagnetic parameters as input. How to make full use of features from multiple perspective is a critical issue for improving model accuracy. To solve it, this letter proposes an attention-modulated feature fusion neural network (AMFFNN). AMFFNN achieves multiperspective feature fusion (MPFF) at the input side and independent feature fusion (IFF) at the output side. In addition, feature fusion in AMFFNN is enhanced by attention modules to dynamically identify the importance of each feature. Statistical and comparative results of simulations demonstrate that AMFFNN outperforms existing methods in terms of accuracy, stability, and generalization. © 2023 IEEE.

Time-varying formation-containment control for heterogeneous multi-agent systems with communication and output delays via observer-based feedback protocol

In this article, the time-varying formation-containment control problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MASs) with an observer-based state feedback protocol is studied, where both communication delays and output delays are taken into consideration. By introducing an augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals (LKFs) candidate and employing less conservative methods to estimate its derivative, an improved quasi-formation-containment criterion is derived. On this basis, some observers and controllers are designed to allow for a larger maximum upper bound (MUB) of time delays on the premise of guaranteeing the fulfillment of the time-varying formation of leaders and the bounded convergence of followers. The estimation of the MUB determines the allowable delay range for system stability under the designed observers and controllers. Moreover, a distributed algorithm is developed to calculate the MUB of time delays, the observer gains, and the controller gains. Finally, two simulation experiments are implemented to demonstrate the obtained results, which verify the superiority and practicability of the criterion and algorithm. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Silicon Optical Filter With Widely Tunable Bandwidth Driving by Intelligent Algorithms

Capitalizing two silicon rings assisted a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure, we propose and demonstrate picometer narrowband optical filters featuring widely tunable bandwidths, high extinction ratios and low in-band ripples. By tuning the bandwidth of any ring or the resonance offset between the two rings, the filter bandwidth could be flexibly manipulated. Notably, by controlling the phase of the two rings and the MZI structures, the extinction ratios and shape factors of the filter could be commendably improved. It is worth mentioning that a genetic algorithm is employed to efficiently manipulate the various heaters on the optical filter, enabling the attainment of desired target filtering waveforms. Experimental results demonstrate the filter capability to widely adjust its 3dB-bandwidth while maintaining high extinction ratios, low in-band ripples and favorable shape factors. To the best of our knowledge, it is a record bandwidth tuning range among the algorithm-driven pm-narrowband optical filters. With the dominant advantages and high performance, the proposed optical filters are competent to dynamically process the on-chip narrowband signals. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Fixed-Time Adaptive Tracking Event-Based control for Uncertain Stochastic Nonlinear systems With Output Constraints

This paper focuses on an adaptive fixed-time tracking control problem for nonstrict-feedback stochastic nonlinear systems with unknown control coefficients and output constraints. To overcome this problem, this article introduces a unified system transformation function to facilitate the transition of the system from constrained to unconstrained states. Subsequently, a fuzzy approximation principle is utilized for handling unknown terms in the transformed system, while Nussbaum functions are employed to manage unknown control directions. Then, combined with the backstepping technique, an adaptive fixed-time tracking controller is designed with an event-triggered mechanism, which not only achieves the convergence of tracking errors within a limited time independent of initial states, but also conserves resources. Under the proposed tracking controller, practical fixed-time stability can be ensured for the closed-loop system. Finally, two simulation examples demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

High-Sensitivity and External RI-Independent Mode-Selective Michelson Interferometer Using a Single-Ended Helical Graded-Index Fiber

We have theoretically and experimentally proposed and demonstrated an all-in-fiber-core mode-selective Michelson interferometer (MS-MI) sensor utilizing a single-ended helical graded-index few-mode fiber (SE-HGIFMF). The SE-HGIFMF effectively eliminates multi-mode interference, remains insensitive to external refractive index (RI) variations, and significantly enhances sensing sensitivity due to the minimal disparity in group RI between the two guided core modes. We investigated the torsion, strain, and temperature characteristics of the sensor, achieving sensitivities of 1.785 nm/(rad/m) for directional torsion, 0.0316 nm/μϵ for strain, and 0.624 nm/°C for temperature. These sensitivities are competitive within the fiber optic sensor family and represent the highest values reported for mode-selective MI and Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors to our knowledge. The proposed sensor not only demonstrates exceptional sensitivity but also offers directionality identification for torsion, ease of use, flexible installation, low loss, and high reliability, showcasing robustness against environmental fluctuations. © 1983-2012 IEEE.
