This paper deals with the fault detection filter design problem for linear time invariant time-delay systems with unknown input. The core of our study is to a) take the behavior of delayed state and measurement into consideration when the observer-based fault detection filter is constructed; b) solve the formulated fault detection filter design problem by combining of using the left eigenstructure assignment approach and H/sub /spl infin// optimization technique. Through a suitable choice of the filter gain matrices and residual weighting matrix, the residual can be completely decoupled from the delay-free unknown input, while the influence of the delayed unknown input on residual is minimized in the sense of H/sub /spl infin// norm. Numerical simulation is used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

A systems re-engineering technique to integrated control and supervision for applications to industrial multi-zone furnaces has been elaborated by using known theories on generalized predictive control and nonlinear programming. This paper presents the derivation of optimizing equations and inequalities. The design is based on the use of general predictive control to provide optimized set-points under the presumption a well designed regulatory control was implemented at the executive level. Digital implementation of control functions are sought within standard computer process control platform for practical engineering and maintenance reasons. Copyright © 2004 IFAC.

A new method for the infinite horizon quadratic regulation of constrained linear time varying systems is addressed. The key idea is to achieve a cost value arbitrarily close (but not equal) to the theoretically minimum one. In a neighborhood of the origin, the controller is formulated as a min-max LQR based on polytopic inclusion of the dynamics in this neighborhood. Outside this neighborhood, the control moves are obtained by solving a constrained finite horizon optimization problem and an unconstrained Riccati iteration formula. The proposed solver has low computational burden and preserves the feasibility of the original problem iff the min-max LQR exists as a feasible solution. A simulation example validates its stability.

A computerized and automatic precision irrigation system based on estimation of crops water stress with acoustic emission (AE) technique was developed in the modern greenhouse. The system can automatically acquire the real-time AE signals and transpiration data from tomato crop respectively with AE sensor and electronic balance, The system also can automatically obtain environment parameters of the greenhouse, such as temperature, air humidity, the density of the sunlight and CO/sub 2/ density, and then according to an optimum control algorithm, the system automatically carried out precision irrigation. The experiment results have shown that AE events increase gradually with the increase of transpiration speed of crops to some extent. The system has the potential to implement optimum and automatic irrigation based on the information acquired from the crops with acoustic emission, but the system is easily to be affected by noise of environment.

A unified and general framework is presented for H/sub /spl infin// control of mixed continuous-time and discrete-time time-varying (periodic) systems. Using the delta operator, a close relationship is shown between the continuous- and discrete-time solutions. No assumptions are made on certain system matrices being zero or normalized, which makes the approach general and easy to apply. A combined continuous/discrete-time lifting procedure is shown to be useful, especially for ill-conditioned systems. This procedure together with the delta formalism results in a numerically robust design method concerning both short and long sampling periods for systems with W-conditioned dynamics, including widely spread eigenvalues.

A procedure for H/sub /spl infin// optimization of low order controllers for discrete-time and sampled-data systems is presented in this paper. Generally, low order H/sub /spl infin// controllers may be achieved by solving bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs). In this paper an iterative alternation between two LMIs gives a suboptimal solution. To avoid local minima in this search the initial controller is obtained by a frequency weighted controller reduction scheme, where the closed loop properties of a full order controller is taken into account. A minimal number of parameters in the state space realization of the controller also reduces the complexity and improves numerical robustness. The complete presentation is based on delta operator models, which shows a close relationship between the continuous- and discrete-time solutions. The sensitivity of the ordinary discrete-time shift operator LMI formulation to small sampling periods is also analyzed.

The Hamiltonian function method plays an important role in stability analysis and stabilization. The key point in applying the method is to express the system under consideration as the form of dissipative Hamiltonian systems, which yields the problem of generalized Hamiltonian realization. This paper deals with the generalized Hamiltonian realization of autonomous nonlinear systems. First, this paper investigates the relation between traditional Hamiltonian realizations and first integrals, proposes a new method of generalized Hamiltonian realization called the orthogonal decomposition method, and gives the dissipative realization form of passive systems. This paper has proved that an arbitrary system has an orthogonal decomposition realization and an arbitrary asymptotically stable system has a strict dissipative realization. Then this paper studies the feedback dissipative realization problem and proposes a control-switching method for the realization. Finally, this paper proposes several sufficient conditions for feedback dissipative realization.

A control systems engineering approach, employing a two-level overall system architecture and different but compatible formalisms for system representation on the upper and lower levels, has been investigated in detail. One design alternative is based on employing fuzzy-system approximators and solving for the adaptive tracking of the given, arbitrary, desired system outputs. The other alternative is based on state equations of composite systems and the use of neural-network approximators to deal with uncertainties and control adaptation. In both alternatives similarity property of subsystems has been exploited. Both designs can be implemented within the standard computer process control technology, and are therefore believed to be promising in applied systems engineering. Copyright © 2003 IFAC.

By using the result of robust strictly positive real synthesis of polynomial segments for continuous time systems, it is proved that, for any two n-th order polynomials a(z) and b(z), the Schur stability of their convex combination is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an n-th order polynomial c(z) such that c(z)/a(z) and c(z)/b(z) are both strictly positive real. We also provide the construction method of c(z). Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of this method.
