When facing massive statistical data, the k-means algorithm is very difficult to satisfy the need of data processing as it lacks an effective parallel mechanism. This paper proposes an improved k-means algorithm (IMR-KCA) to conduct clustering analysis based on medical data employing MapReduce computing framework. Through analyzing the defects of vast redundancy in the traditional k-means algorithms, a selection model is firstly proposed to simplify the computations with multiple clustering centers. Based on several proposed theorems, we prove the correctness of this selection model. Second, this paper provides a method to calculate the distances from extreme points to central points, and the original Euclidean distance is replaced with Manhattan distance. For this simplification, a group of theorems are proposed to prove the correctness. Next, we provide a group of implementation algorithms to complete the parallelism of the clustering computation employing the MapReduce framework. Finally, the experimental results illustrate that IMR-KCA is more reliable and efficient than the direct parallelization of the traditional clustering algorithms based on MapReduce. Finding communities in networks is one of the challenging issues in complex network research. We have to deal with very large networks that contain billions of vertices, which makes community discovery a computationally intensive work. Moreover, communities usually overlap each other, which greatly increases the difficulty of identifying the boundaries of communities. In this paper, we propose a parallel multi-label propagation algorithm (PMLPA) that enhances traditional multi-label propagation algorithm (MLPA) in two ways. First, the critical steps of MLPA are parallelized based on the MapReduce model to get higher scalability. Second, new label updating strategy is used to automatically determine the most valuable labels of each vertex. Furthermore, we study the improvement of PMLPA through considering the influence of vertices and labels on label updating. In this way, the importance of each label can be described with higher precision. Experiments on artificial and real networks prove that the proposed algorithms can achieve both high discovering accuracy and high scalability. © 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The general notion of a metric space encompasses a diverse range of data types and accompanying similarity measures. Hence, metric search plays an important role in a wide range of settings, including multimedia retrieval, data mining, and data integration. With the aim of accelerating metric search, a collection of pivotbased indexing techniques for metric data has been proposed, which reduces the number of potentially expensive similarity comparisons by exploiting the triangle inequality for pruning and validation. However, no comprehensive empirical study of those techniques exists. Existing studies each offers only a narrower coverage, and they use different pivot selection strategies that affect performance substantially and thus render cross-study comparisons difficult or impossible. We offer a survey of existing pivot-based indexing techniques, and report a comprehensive empirical comparison of their construction costs, update efficiency, storage sizes, and similarity search performance. As part of the study, we provide modifications for two existing indexing techniques to make them more competitive. The findings and insights obtained from the study reveal different strengths and weaknesses of different indexing techniques, and offer guidance on selecting an appropriate indexing technique for a given setting. © 2017 VLDB Endowment.

In adversarial environment such as intrusion detection and spam filtering, the adversary-intruder or spam advertiser may attempt to produce contaminate training instance and manipulate the learning of classifier. In order to keep good classification performance, many robuster learning methods have been proposed to deal with the adversarial attack. Support Vector Machines(SVMs) is a kind of successful approach in the adversarial classification tasks and the investigation of robust SVMs is very popular. However, in many real application, the data including stain instance is coming dynamically. Batch learning which needs retraining when encountering new samples, will consume more computing resources. In this paper, we propose a robust Lagrangian support vector machine (RLSVM) with modified kernel matrix and explore the online learning algorithm on it. The experimental results show the robustness of RLSVM against label noise produced by adversaries under the online adversarial environment.

Although artificial intelligence (AI) is currently one of the most interesting areas in scientific research, the potential threats posed by emerging AI systems remain a source of persistent controversy. To address the issue of AI threat,this study proposes a "standard intelligence model" that unifies AI and human characteristics in terms of four aspects of knowledge, i.e., input, output, mastery, and creation. Using this model, we observe three challenges, namely, expanding of the von Neumann architecture;testing and ranking the intelligence quotient (IQ) of naturally and artificially intelligent systems, including humans, Google, Microsoft’s Bing, Baidu, and Siri;and finally, the dividing of artificially intelligent systems into seven grades from robots to Google Brain. Based on this, we conclude that Google’s AlphaGo belongs to the third grade. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Aiming at the problem that a large number of students' electronic deposit data is easy to forge and destroy, a student electronic deposit application architecture based on blockchain is proposed. There are some features on blockchain, such as decentralized, the non-tamperable of data, the consensus mechanism and data encryption features, and the electronic depository network. All these features provide a secure and credible storage environment, ensures the traceable of the student's electronic deposit information, the trust of the entire network, and the security of the data. At the same time, an improved PBFT consensus algorithm is proposed, which eliminates the certificate elimination phase to reduce network resource consumption, and constructs a decentralized electronic depository platform in combination with the blockchain to realize the authenticity, integrity and reliability of the electronic certificate data. The further development and application of blockchain technology is prospected, hoping to provide inspiration and reference for future related research.

Growth stage information is a very primary parameter for managing the grain crop. In this study, time series Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) data in 2015 were obtained in Anhui Province, China based on 8-day composite MOD09A1 data products, and the extraction method of rice phenology was specifically analyzed at a provincial scale. HANTS (Harmonic Analysis of Time Series) filtering algorithm was firstly used to smooth the time series EVI curves and identify every growth and development period of paddy rice. The results indicate that HANTS has a better performance in removing noise, restoring original information and retain the change information of multi-temporal EVI curves. The primary planting regions were located in the southern Huai-River areas, from early June to late June in 2015. It turned into the transplanting stage in succession from south to north and followed by the heading stage in succession in early August. From early September to late October, it turned into mature stage from south to north in succession. © 2017 IEEE.

An automatic question answering system is generally composed of the question analysis module, the information retrieval module, the answer selection module, etc. The core component of automatic question answering system is the answer selection module, which focuses on extracting adequate information from the questions and answers and representing them effectively. The performance of answer selection directly determines the quality of the answers submitted to users. In this paper, we studied the answer selection schemes, especially the Attentive LSTM scheme, focusing on the application of the attention mechanism commonly utilized in deep learning models. Meanwhile, a self-attentive LSTM is proposed by combining the Attentive LSTM with self-attention which is capable of extracting the local features and the global features of texts at the same time. In addition, a multi-attentive LSTM is proposed so that multiple parts of information in the question are available for the answer. We performed a series of experiments based on the datasets InsuranceQA and TrecQA, compared and analyzed on the performances of the above schemes.

Cascade control for supply air temperature in a variable air volume system

Most supply air temperature in variable air volume systems is typically set at 55F(13 °C) that is design value in these systems. However, sometimes the load of cooling varies greatly in different zones, and it means the indoor temperature of low-load zones is lower than comfortable value, even if the supply air damper is at the minimum value that is not closed for minimum outside air requirement. Meanwhile, in transition season, the indoor temperature is also lower due to low outdoor temperature. These factors provided an opportunity to apply higher supply air temperature to reduce air handling unit (AHU) cooling load and box reheating. In this paper, a cascade control method is used to raise the supply air temperature. The external control loop controls the setting value of supply air temperature with the minimum supply air volume as the control target. And the internal control loop controls the supply air temperature by regulating valve. The cascade structure can solve the problem that the time constant of the system is too large. The simulation results show that the quality of control is good and the reheating can be cancelled.

Robust, discriminative and comprehensive dictionary learning for face recognition

For sparse representation or sparse coding based image classification, the dictionary, which is required to faithfully and robustly represent query images, plays an important role on its success. Learning dictionaries from the training data for sparse coding has shown state-of-the-art results in image classification and face recognition. However, for face recognition, conventional dictionary learning methods cannot well learn a reliable and robust dictionary due to suffering from the small-sample-size problem. The other significant issue is that current dictionary learning do not completely cover the important components of signal representation (e.g., commonality, particularity, and disturbance), which limit their performance. In order to solve the above issues, in this paper, we propose a novel robust, discriminative and comprehensive dictionary learning (RDCDL) method, in which a robust dictionary is learned from comprehensive training sample diversities generated by extracting and generating facial variations. Especially, to completely represent the commonality, particularity and disturbance, class-shared, class-specific and disturbance dictionary atoms are learned to represent the data from different classes. Discriminative regularizations on the dictionary and the representation coefficients are used to exploit discriminative information, which effectively improves the classification capability of the dictionary. The proposed RDCDL method is extensively evaluated on benchmark face image databases, and it shows superior performance to many state-of-the-art dictionary learning methods for face recognition.
