A systematic study of RF circuit performance degradation subject to soft oxide breakdown (SBD) and hot carrier (HC) stress is demonstrated. Device parameters before and after stress are extracted from the experimental data of 0.18 pm CMOS technology. The effects of SBD and HC degradations on f/sub T/, f/sub max/, third-order interception point and the four noise parameters (F/sub min/, R/sub n/, G/sub 0pt/ and B/sub 0pt/) of an RF device have been studied. Since the figures of merit for the RF circuit characterization are gain, noise figure, linearity and input matching, the RF low noise amplifier (LNA) performance drift is evaluated for these features. The predicted the degradation trend from our experimental and simulation results can help design reliable CMOS RFICs.

In this paper, we present the first implementation of a K-band subharmonic down-converter fabricated in a 0.18-/spl mu/m GaAs Metamorphic High Electron Mobility Transistor (MHEMT) process. The low noise and high gain characteristics of the MHEMTs at K-band allow for the integration of a single-stage amplifier with a subharmonic mixer resulting in low-power broadband performance. The subharmonic mixer exhibits conversion loss of 13 dB and IIP3 of +8 dBm from 23 to 30 GHz. With the addition of the amplifier, the down-converter exhibits a conversion loss of 3 dB, noise figure of 5 dB, and IIP3 of -5 dBm from 26 to 30 GHz. The single-stage amplifier exhibits InP-like performance with gain of 11 dB, NF of 1.5 dB, and dc power consumption of 15 mW.

This paper reports the development of the first 2.4 GHz monolithic-integrated CMOS power amplifier with micromachined inductors. The amplifier is implemented in a 0.24-/spl mu/m CMOS technology. The high-Q (quality factor) micromachined solenoid inductors are fabricated on the surface of the CMOS chip. For 2.5-V operation, the amplifier delivers 20-dBm output power with 31% PAE (power added efficiency) to 50-/spl Omega/ load.

We present a framework for clustering and classifying cheque images according to their payee-line content. The features used in the clustering and classification processes are extracted from the wavelet domain by means of thresholding and counting of wavelet coefficients. The feasibility of this framework is tested on a database of 2620 cheque images. This database consists of cheques from 10 different accounts. Each account is written by a different person. Clustering and classification are performed separately on each account using distance-based techniques. We achieved correct-classification rates of 86% and 81% for the supervised and unsupervised learning cases, respectively. These rates are the average of correct-classification rates obtained from the 10 different accounts.

In this paper, a solution to a manipulation control problem (target identification and grasping) using a real platform in combination with a vision system is proposed. The task for the end-effector is to approach a randomly placed spherical object of known size. The control law is approximated by using an approach based on fuzzy logic. The controller determines the parameters of the target (a spherical object acquired from the vision system mounted on the manipulator) using a vision algorithm. The fuzzy rules are built in a supervised way, after studying the behavior of the system. Experimental results obtained using an industrial manipulator (AM1 with 6 DOF model in Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Korea) are presented.

The purpose of this paper is to draw a picture of the worldview of classical theories, then draw a modern or post quantum mechanic picture; then give an understanding of what anticipatory systems mean within each of these systems. Then we will give an account of the aesthetic experience associated with the two worldviews. The paper then refers to some changes in the implications from one perspective to the other. The problems associated with the classical worldview will be regarded as shortcomings of an Aristotelian orientation towards knowledge, which in principle are inherent in the classical physics, and its relevant philosophies. This shortcoming has dominated most of the Western view of knowledge and historical references. As is apparent the first category of systems (classical) does not have any room for “anticipation,” rather the behavioral outcome of the system could well show what was expected. The intent of this paper then is to look at the second category of systems, and study their anticipatory feature. It will then be suggested that the undeterministic anticipatory characteristics of these systems not only enrich the complexity of such systems, but also enrich the aesthetic qualities that they represent. To further elaborate on these systems, we analyze two contemporary theories, namely self-organization and autopoiesis, in order to illustrate the nature of anticipatory behavior of these systems. That is, while we find the former theory to be a good representation of anticipatory systems and its aesthetic qualities, we find the opposite in the conceptual structure of the latter. We therefore adopt autopoiesis to mythopoietic communication. Due to the similarities of major philosophical outlook and qualities of these systems, as well as the proposed model with those associated with Eastern philosophies such as conceptions of space-time, and other orientation, occasionally comparison will be made with Eastern views of cosmic order and aesthetics.

A simple and accurate substrate current model was developed by modifying the model of ionization characteristic length and tested for both n-channel and p-channel devices against the measurement data. It shows a better match by comparing with other models reported in the literature. The model has been used to simulate the transient substrate current in circuit operating conditions to show its ability to predict the device and circuit lifetime.

In this work, direct tunneling, series resistance, and surface roughness effects on the capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of ultrathin gate dielectrics in deep submicron MOSFETs are studied in a unified manner. An equivalent circuit model taking all the above mentioned effects into account is proposed. Based on our understanding, it is for the first time that the surface roughness effect on the C-V characteristics has been explored in the electrical engineering perspective.
