Intelligent integrated sensing and communication:a survey

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising technique to increase spectral efficiency and support various emerging applications by sharing the spectrum and hardware between these functionalities. However, the traditional ISAC schemes are highly dependent on the accurate mathematical model and suffer from the challenges of high complexity and poor performance in practical scenarios. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a viable technique to address these issues due to its powerful learning capabilities, satisfactory generalization capability, fast inference speed, and high adaptability for dynamic environments, facilitating a system design shift from model-driven to data-driven. Intelligent ISAC, which integrates AI into ISAC, has been a hot topic that has attracted many researchers to investigate. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of intelligent ISAC, including its motivation, typical applications, recent trends, and challenges. In particular, we first introduce the basic principle of ISAC, followed by its key techniques. Then, an overview of AI and a comparison between model-based and AI-based methods for ISAC are provided. Furthermore, the typical applications of AI in ISAC and the recent trends for AI-enabled ISAC are reviewed. Finally, the future research issues and challenges of intelligent ISAC are discussed.

Coarse-to-fine lightweight meta-embedding for ID-based recommendations

State-of-the-art recommender systems are increasingly focused on optimizing implementation efficiency, such as enabling on-device recommendations under memory constraints. Current methods commonly use lightweight embeddings for users and items or employ compact embeddings to enhance reusability and reduce memory usage. However, these approaches consider only the coarse-grained aspects of embeddings, overlooking subtle semantic nuances. This limitation results in an adversarial degradation of meta-embedding performance, impeding the system's ability to capture intricate relationships between users and items, leading to suboptimal recommendations. To address this, we propose a novel approach to efficiently learn meta-embeddings with varying grained and apply fine-grained meta-embeddings to strengthen the representation of their coarse-grained counterparts. Specifically, we introduce a recommender system based on a graph neural network, where each user and item is represented as a node. These nodes are directly connected to coarse-grained virtual nodes and indirectly linked to fine-grained virtual nodes, facilitating learning of multi-grained semantics. Fine-grained semantics are captured through sparse meta-embeddings, which dynamically balance embedding uniqueness and memory constraints. To ensure their sparseness, we rely on initialization methods such as sparse principal component analysis combined with a soft thresholding activation function. Moreover, we propose a weight-bridging update strategy that aligns coarse-grained meta-embedding with several fine-grained meta-embeddings based on the underlying semantic properties of users and items. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms existing baselines. The code of our proposal is available at https://***/htyjers/C2F-MetaEmbed.

Deep learning architectures have exhibited robust performance in short-term load forecasting tasks, contingent upon access to substantial training datasets. However, the acquisition of such datasets presents significant challenges, as load operators may be reluctant to share their data due to privacy protection policies. Consequently, the accurate prediction of loads becomes increasingly complex. This study proposes a novel approach to short-term load forecasting, leveraging federated learning and local tuning techniques. The proposed two-stage methodology commences with the training of a generic model through decentralized learning and central aggregation, aimed at preserving data privacy. Subsequently, the resulting generic model undergoes local fine-tuning on each operator's specific load data for enhanced forecasting accuracy. Empirical evaluations conducted on multiple regional load datasets from the GEFCom2012 and AEMO datasets demonstrate the trained model's capacity to improve short-term load forecasting accuracy while maintaining the confidentiality of individual operators’ data. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). One model, two skills: active vision and action learning model for robotic manipulation

The perception in most existing vision-based reinforcement learning(RL) models for robotic manipulation relies heavily on static third-person or hand-mounted first-person cameras. In scenarios with occlusions and limited maneuvering space, these carefully positioned cameras often struggle to provide effective visual observations during manipulation. Taking inspiration from human capabilities, we introduce a novel RL-based dual-arm active visual-guided manipulation model(DAVMM), which simultaneously infers “eye” actions and “hand” actions for two separate robotic arms(referred to as the vision-arm and the worker-arm) based on current observations, empowering the robot with the ability to actively perceive and interact with its environment. To handle the extensive redundant observation-action space, we propose a decouplable target-centric reward paradigm to offer stable guidance for the training process. For making fine-grained manipulation action decisions, alongside a global scene image encoder, we utilize an independent encoder to extract local target texture features,enabling the simultaneous acquisition of both global and detailed local information. Additionally, we employ residual-RL and curriculum learning techniques to further enhance our model's sample efficiency and training stability. We conducted comparative experiments and analyses of DAVMM against a set of strong baselines on three occluded and narrow-space manipulation tasks. DAVMM notably improves the success rates across all manipulation tasks and showcases rapid learning capabilities.

Enhanced Acceleration for Generalized Nonconvex Low-Rank Matrix Learning

Matrix minimization techniques that employ the nuclear norm have gained recognition for their applicability in tasks like image inpainting, clustering, classification, and reconstruction. However, they come with inherent biases and computational burdens, especially when used to relax the rank function, making them less effective and efficient in real-world scenarios. To address these challenges, our research focuses on generalized nonconvex rank regularization problems in robust matrix completion, low-rank representation, and robust matrix regression. We introduce innovative approaches for effective and efficient low-rank matrix learning, grounded in generalized nonconvex rank relaxations inspired by various substitutes for the ?0-norm relaxed functions. These relaxations allow us to more accurately capture low-rank structures. Our optimization strategy employs a nonconvex and multi-variable alternating direction method of multipliers, backed by rigorous theoretical analysis for complexity and *** algorithm iteratively updates blocks of variables, ensuring efficient convergence. Additionally, we incorporate the randomized singular value decomposition technique and/or other acceleration strategies to enhance the computational efficiency of our approach, particularly for large-scale constrained minimization problems. In conclusion, our experimental results across a variety of image vision-related application tasks unequivocally demonstrate the superiority of our proposed methodologies in terms of both efficacy and efficiency when compared to most other related learning methods.

Multi-label, Classification-based Prediction of Breast Cancer Metastasis Directions

Predicting the metastatic direction of primary breast cancer (BC), thus assisting physicians in precise treatment, strict follow-up, and effectively improving the prognosis. The clinical data of 293,946 patients with primary BC diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Multiple interpolations and Multi-label Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique methods were used for data analysis, and machine learning model was established for multi-label classification. Finally, Surgical information, lymph node status, distant metastasis, tumor size, chemotherapy, histological type, and radiotherapy had significant influence as inputs. Compared with the k-nearest neighbor model, average accuracies of the decision tree and random forest (RF) models increased from 88.84% to 93.59% and 94.14%, respectively. Their average precision, recall rate, F1 score, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and weighted-F1 increased from 87.24% to 95.85% and 94.74%, 87.73% to 90.40% and 91.76%, 87.07% to 92.16% and 93.45%, 97.11% to 99.53% and 99.95%, 82.13% to 89.44% and 90.48%, respectively. In conclusion, the RF model, which showed the best performance, can be used in multi-label prediction of BC metastasis directions, and can assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients with primary BC. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). As the adoption of explainable AI(XAI) continues to expand, the urgency to address its privacy implications intensifies. Despite a growing corpus of research in AI privacy and explainability, there is little attention on privacy-preserving model explanations. This article presents the first thorough survey about privacy attacks on model explanations and their countermeasures. Our contribution to this field comprises a thorough analysis of research papers with a connected taxonomy that facilitates the categorization of privacy attacks and countermeasures based on the targeted explanations. This work also includes an initial investigation into the causes of privacy leaks. Finally, we discuss unresolved issues and prospective research directions uncovered in our analysis. This survey aims to be a valuable resource for the research community and offers clear insights for those new to this domain. To support ongoing research, we have established an online resource repository, which will be continuously updated with new and relevant findings.

Robust video question answering via contrastive cross-modality representation learning

Video question answering(VideoQA) is a challenging yet important task that requires a joint understanding of low-level video content and high-level textual semantics. Despite the promising progress of existing efforts, recent studies revealed that current VideoQA models mostly tend to over-rely on the superficial correlations rooted in the dataset bias while overlooking the key video content, thus leading to unreliable results. Effectively understanding and modeling the temporal and semantic characteristics of a given video for robust VideoQA is crucial but, to our knowledge, has not been well investigated. To fill the research gap, we propose a robust VideoQA framework that can effectively model the cross-modality fusion and enforce the model to focus on the temporal and global content of videos when making a QA decision instead of exploiting the shortcuts in datasets. Specifically, we design a self-supervised contrastive learning objective to contrast the positive and negative pairs of multimodal input, where the fused representation of the original multimodal input is enforced to be closer to that of the intervened input based on video perturbation. We expect the fused representation to focus more on the global context of videos rather than some static keyframes. Moreover, we introduce an effective temporal order regularization to enforce the inherent sequential structure of videos for video representation. We also design a Kullback-Leibler divergence-based perturbation invariance regularization of the predicted answer distribution to improve the robustness of the model against temporal content perturbation of videos. Our method is model-agnostic and can be easily compatible with various VideoQA backbones. Extensive experimental results and analyses on several public datasets show the advantage of our method over the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both accuracy and robustness.

Solar flares are one of the strongest outbursts of solar activity,posing a serious threat to Earth’s critical infrastructure,such as communications,navigation,power,and ***,it is essential to accurately predict solar flares in order to ensure the safety of human ***,the research focuses on two directions:first,identifying predictors with more physical information and higher prediction accuracy,and second,building flare prediction models that can effectively handle complex observational *** terms of flare observability and predictability,this paper analyses multiple dimensions of solar flare observability and evaluates the potential of observational parameters in *** flare prediction models,the paper focuses on data-driven models and physical models,with an emphasis on the advantages of deep learning techniques in dealing with complex and high-dimensional *** reviewing existing traditional machine learning,deep learning,and fusion methods,the key roles of these techniques in improving prediction accuracy and efficiency are *** prevailing challenges,this study discusses the main challenges currently faced in solar flare prediction,such as the complexity of flare samples,the multimodality of observational data,and the interpretability of *** conclusion summarizes these findings and proposes future research directions and potential technology advancement.

Enhance the Performance of Directional Feature-based Palmprint Recognition by Directional Response Stability Measurement

Palmprint recognition is an emerging biometrics technology that has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Many palmprint recognition methods have been proposed, including traditional methods and deep learning-based methods. Among the traditional methods, the methods based on directional features are mainstream because they have high recognition rates and are robust to illumination changes and small noises. However, to date, in these methods, the stability of the palmprint directional response has not been deeply studied. In this paper, we analyse the problem of directional response instability in palmprint recognition methods based on directional feature. We then propose a novel palmprint directional response stability measurement (DRSM) to judge the stability of the directional feature of each pixel. After filtering the palmprint image with the filter bank, we design DRSM according to the relationship between the maximum response value and other response values for each pixel. Using DRSM, we can judge those pixels with unstable directional response and use a specially designed encoding mode related to a specific method. We insert the DRSM mechanism into seven classical methods based on directional feature, and conduct many experiments on six public palmprint databases. The experimental results show that the DRSM mechanism can effectively improve the performance of these methods. In the field of palmprint recognition, this work is the first in-depth study on the stability of the palmprint directional response, so this paper has strong reference value for research on palmprint recognition methods based on directional features.
