A key method used in the study of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is sentiment analysis, or emotion analysis, plays a pivotal role in text analysis. Its primary function is to discern and categorize the underlying emotions within textual content, classifying them as positive, neutral, or negative sentiments. A variety of textual inputs can be used with this process, including entire documents, individual sentences, and more. Understanding the sentiments expressed by individuals is of paramount importance to organizations in today’s digital age. Clients and customers now have the means to express their thoughts and emotions with greater ease and immediacy than ever before. This wealth of sentiment data can offer valuable insights that organizations can leverage to enhance their products, services, and overall customer experience. The present study focuses on the sentiment analysis of Twitter data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, employing the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm. To improve the accuracy of sentiment analysis, a pre-processing procedure is introduced, which involves the use of the Neat Text module in Python to clean the tweets. In this research endeavor, a dataset comprising 1,79,107 COVID-19-related tweets is subjected to sentiment analysis using the proposed pre-processing module and LSTM. The results demonstrate an impressive accuracy rate of 96% in accurately determining the sentiments conveyed in these COVID-19 tweets. In contrast, the existing algorithm, based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN), achieved a significantly lower accuracy rate of 76%. This research not only showcases the effectiveness of LSTM and pre-processing in sentiment analysis but also highlights the significance of sentiment analysis in gaining valuable insights from vast amounts of textual data, especially when important events like the COVID-19 pandemic are involved.

Feature transformation methods aim to find an optimal mathematical feature-feature crossing process that generates high-value features and improves the performance of downstream machine learning tasks. Existing frameworks, though designed to mitigate manual costs, often treat feature transformations as isolated operations, ignoring dynamic dependencies between transformation steps. To address the limitations, we propose TCTO, a collaborative multi-agent reinforcement learning framework that automates feature engineering through graph-driven path optimization. The framework’s core innovation lies in an evolving interaction graph that models features as nodes and transformations as edges. Through graph pruning and backtracking, it dynamically eliminates low-impact edges, reduces redundant operation, and enhances exploration stability. This graph also provides full traceability to empower TCTO to reuse high-utility subgraphs from historical transformations. To demonstrate the efficacy and adaptability of our approach, we conduct comprehensive experiments and case studies, which show superior performance across a range of datasets. Data augmentation has been an essential technique for improving the generalization ability of deep neural networks in image classification ***, intensive changes in appearance and different degrees of occlusion in images are the key factors that severely affect the generalization ability of image classification models. Therefore, in order to enhance the generalization performance and robustness of deep models, data augmentation approaches by providing models with more diverse training data in various scenarios are widely applied. Although many existing data augmentation methods simulate occlusion in the augmented images to enhance the generalization of models, these methods randomly delete some areas in images without considering the semantic information of images. In this work, we propose a novel data augmentation method named AdvMask for image classification based on sparse adversarial attack techniques. AdvMask first identifies the key points that have the greatest influence on the classification results via a proposed end-to-end sparse adversarial attack module. During the data augmentation process, AdvMask efficiently generates diverse augmented data with structured occlusions based on the key points. By doing so, AdvMask can force deep models to seek other relevant content while the most discriminative content is hidden. Extensive experimental results on various benchmark datasets and deep models demonstrate that our proposed method can effectively improve the generalization performance of deep models and significantly outperforms previous data augmentation methods. © 2023, The Authors. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective method for dealing with the challenging fine-grained cross-modal retrieval task where it aims to enable flexible retrieval among subor-dinate categories across different modalities. Specifically, in order to enhance information interaction in different modalities for fine-grained objects, a channel mix method is developed and performed upon the channels of deep activations across dif-ferent modalities. After that, a 1 x 1 convolution is employed to aggregate the mixed channels into a unified feature vector. Moreover, equipped with a novel fine-grained cross-modal cen-ter loss, our method can further improve the intra-class separa-bility as well as inter-class compactness for multi-modalities. Experiments are conducted on the fine-grained cross-modal benchmark dataset and show our superiority over competing methods. Meanwhile, ablation studies also demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposals. © 2022 IEEE.

Deep learning is a powerful multi-layer architecture that has important applications in image processing and text classification. This paper first introduces the development of deep learning and two important algorithms of deep learning: convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks. The paper then introduces three applications of deep learning for image recognition, image detection, and image forensics, as well as three text classification methods based on convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and other text classification methods. Finally, the development trend of deep learning in the field of text and image processing and the difficulties to be further researched are summarised and prospected.

Determining the quality of fruit can be very challenging without the proper understanding. There are many factors that can result in determining the quality and therefore the actual taste of any given fruit. In this paper we attempt to determine the quality of the guava fruit on what are considered the three most important aspects of flavour by experts, those being, Colour, Shape and texture. All three of these aspects will be determined on a scale of 1-5. In order to produce these results, we are using an exceptional deep learning architecture and a primary dataset curated by a panel of experts who photographed the fruits in six-hour intervals for many days. We have compared the results over multiple deep learning architectures to find the most accurate results. This paper shows the importance of deep learning as a potential future tool for assessing the quality of fruits. © 2022 IEEE.

Symphony: Localizing Multiple Acoustic Sources with a Single Microphone Array

Sound recognition is an important and popular function of smart devices. The location of sound is basic information associated with the acoustic source. Apart from sound recognition, whether the acoustic sources can be localized largely affects the capability and quality of the smart device’s interactive functions. In this work, we study the problem of concurrently localizing multiple acoustic sources with a smart device (e.g., a smart speaker like Amazon Alexa). The existing approaches either can only localize a single source, or require deploying a distributed network of microphone arrays to function. Our proposal called Symphony is the first approach to tackle the above problem with a single microphone array. The insight behind Symphony is that the geometric layout of microphones on the array determines the unique relationship among signals from the same source along the same arriving path, while the source’s location determines the DoAs (direction-of-arrival) of signals along different arriving paths. Symphony therefore includes a geometry-based filtering module to distinguish signals from different sources along different paths and a coherence-based module to identify signals from the same source. We implement Symphony with different types of commercial off-the-shelf microphone arrays and evaluate its performance under different settings. The results show that Symphony has a median localization error of 0.694m, which is 68% less than that of the state-of-the-art approach. © 2022, CC BY.

FER-former: Multi-modal Transformer for Facial Expression Recognition

The ever-increasing demands for intuitive interactions in Virtual Reality has triggered a boom in the realm of Facial Expression Recognition (FER). To address the limitations in existing approaches (e.g., narrow receptive fields and homogenous supervisory signals) and further cement the capacity of FER tools, a novel multifarious supervision-steering Transformer for FER in the wild is proposed in this paper. Referred as FERformer, our approach features multi-granularity embedding integration, hybrid self-attention scheme, and heterogeneous domainsteering supervision. In specific, to dig deep into the merits of the combination of features provided by prevailing CNNs and Transformers, a hybrid stem is designed to cascade two types of learning paradigms simultaneously. Wherein, a FER-specific transformer mechanism is devised to characterize conventional hard one-hot label-focusing and CLIP-based text-oriented tokens in parallel for final classification. To ease the issue of annotation ambiguity, a heterogeneous domains-steering supervision module is proposed to make image features also have text-space semantic correlations by supervising the similarity between image features and text features. On top of the collaboration of multifarious token heads, diverse global receptive fields with multi-modal semantic cues are captured, thereby delivering superb learning capability. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of the proposed FER-former over the existing state-of-the-arts. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Exploring Representation-Level Augmentation for Code Search

Code search, which aims at retrieving the most relevant code fragment for a given natural language query, is a common activity in software development practice. Recently, contrastive learning is widely used in code search research, where many data augmentation approaches for source code (e.g., semantic-preserving program transformation) are proposed to learn better representations. However, these augmentations are at the raw-data level, which requires additional code analysis in the preprocessing stage and additional training costs in the training stage. In this paper, we explore augmentation methods that augment data (both code and query) at representation level which does not require additional data processing and training, and based on this we propose a general format of representation-level augmentation that unifies existing methods. Then, we propose three new augmentation methods (linear extrapolation, binary interpolation, and Gaussian scaling) based on the general format. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the advantages of the proposed augmentation methods over traditional contrastive learning methods on code search. We experimentally evaluate the proposed representation-level augmentation methods with state-of-the-art code search models on a large-scale public dataset consisting of six programming languages. Code completion, which can accelerate the software development process and improve the quality of software products, is an essential part of today’s integrated development environments. It has become an important research topic in the field of software engineering. Recent studies have shown that the method of code completion based on the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) learns syntactic information about the code, which helps to improve the accuracy of code completion. However, when modeling neural networks for ASTs, the sequencing operation of nodes leads to the loss of their hierarchical structure information. Meanwhile, traditional neural networks cannot predict many Out-of-Vocabulary (OoV) words in the terminal node values of AST. To alleviate the above problem, in this paper, we propose a Multiple-Path Learning neural network model for code completion (MPL) based on an AST by learning from a large-scale corpus. In this model, multiple paths such as context path, root path, and terminal node path are established to understand different code features required for node prediction and improve code representation ability. Based on the principle of program local repeatability, it also adopts a replication mechanism to copy the appropriate OoV words from the local terminal node path as the prediction result, further improving the prediction accuracy. The experimental results show that the MPL model has better performance than existing methods on the code completion task.
