Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) is emerging as a promising paradigm to provide aerial-terrestrial computing services in close proximity to mobile devices (MDs). However, meeting the demands of computation-intensive and delay-sensitive tasks for MDs poses several challenges, including the demand-supply contradiction between MDs and MEC servers, the demand-supply heterogeneity between MDs and MEC servers, the trajectory control requirements on energy efficiency and timeliness, and the different time-scale dynamics of the network. To address these issues, we first present a hierarchical architecture by incorporating terrestrial-aerial computing capabilities and leveraging UAV flexibility. Furthermore, we formulate a joint computing resource allocation, computation offloading, and trajectory control problem to maximize the system utility. Since the problem is a non-convex and NP-hard mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), we propose a two-timescale joint computing resource allocation, computation offloading, and trajectory control (TJCCT) approach for solving the problem. In the short timescale, we propose a price-incentive model for on-demand computing resource allocation and a matching mechanism-based method for computation offloading. In the long timescale, we propose a convex optimization-based method for UAV trajectory control. Besides, we theoretically prove the stability, optimality, and polynomial complexity of TJCCT. Extended simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TJCCT outperforms the comparative algorithms in terms of the system utility, average processing rate, average completion delay, and average completion ratio. In spite of machine learning’s rapid growth, its engineering support is scattered in many forms, and tends to favor certain engineering stages, stakeholders, and evaluation preferences. We envision a capability-based framework, which uses fine-grained specifications for ML model behaviors to unite existing efforts towards better ML engineering. We use concrete scenarios (model design, debugging, and maintenance) to articulate capabilities’ broad applications across various different dimensions, and their impact on building safer, more generalizable and more trustworthy models that reflect human needs. Through preliminary experiments, we show the potential of capabilities for reflecting model generalizability, which can provide guidance for the ML engineering process. ChatGPT can improve software engineering (SE) research practices by offering efficient, accessible information analysis and synthesis based on natural language interactions. However, ChatGPT could bring ethical challenges, encompassing plagiarism, privacy, data security, and the risk of generating biased or potentially detrimental data. This research aims to fill the given gap by elaborating on the key elements: motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research. To achieve this objective, we conducted a literature survey, identified the mentioned elements, and presented their relationships by developing a taxonomy. Further, the identified literature-based elements (motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles) were empirically evaluated by conducting a comprehensive questionnaire-based survey involving SE researchers. Additionally, we employed Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) approach to analyze the relationships between the ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research and develop a level based decision model. We further conducted a Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) analysis to create a cluster-based decision model. These models aim to help SE researchers devise effective strategies for ethically integrating ChatGPT into SE research by following the identified principles through adopting the motivators and addressing the demotivators. The findings of this study will establish a benchmark for incorporating ChatGPT services in SE research with an emphasis on ethical considerations. Impact Statement—This paper establishes the impact of employing ChatGPT in SE research while carefully addressing ethical challenges like privacy, data security, and bias. Symphony: Localizing Multiple Acoustic Sources with a Single Microphone Array

Sound recognition is an important and popular function of smart devices. The location of sound is basic information associated with the acoustic source. Apart from sound recognition, whether the acoustic sources can be localized largely affects the capability and quality of the smart device’s interactive functions. In this work, we study the problem of concurrently localizing multiple acoustic sources with a smart device (e.g., a smart speaker like Amazon Alexa). The existing approaches either can only localize a single source, or require deploying a distributed network of microphone arrays to function. Our proposal called Symphony is the first approach to tackle the above problem with a single microphone array. The insight behind Symphony is that the geometric layout of microphones on the array determines the unique relationship among signals from the same source along the same arriving path, while the source’s location determines the DoAs (direction-of-arrival) of signals along different arriving paths. Symphony therefore includes a geometry-based filtering module to distinguish signals from different sources along different paths and a coherence-based module to identify signals from the same source. We implement Symphony with different types of commercial off-the-shelf microphone arrays and evaluate its performance under different settings. The results show that Symphony has a median localization error of 0.694m, which is 68% less than that of the state-of-the-art approach. © 2022, CC BY.

Advmask: A Sparse Adversarial Attack-Based Data Augmentation Method for Image Classification

Data augmentation has been an essential technique for improving the generalization ability of deep neural networks in image classification ***, intensive changes in appearance and different degrees of occlusion in images are the key factors that severely affect the generalization ability of image classification models. Therefore, in order to enhance the generalization performance and robustness of deep models, data augmentation approaches by providing models with more diverse training data in various scenarios are widely applied. Although many existing data augmentation methods simulate occlusion in the augmented images to enhance the generalization of models, these methods randomly delete some areas in images without considering the semantic information of images. In this work, we propose a novel data augmentation method named AdvMask for image classification based on sparse adversarial attack techniques. AdvMask first identifies the key points that have the greatest influence on the classification results via a proposed end-to-end sparse adversarial attack module. During the data augmentation process, AdvMask efficiently generates diverse augmented data with structured occlusions based on the key points. By doing so, AdvMask can force deep models to seek other relevant content while the most discriminative content is hidden. Extensive experimental results on various benchmark datasets and deep models demonstrate that our proposed method can effectively improve the generalization performance of deep models and significantly outperforms previous data augmentation methods. © 2023, The Authors. Code completion, which can accelerate the software development process and improve the quality of software products, is an essential part of today’s integrated development environments. It has become an important research topic in the field of software engineering. Recent studies have shown that the method of code completion based on the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) learns syntactic information about the code, which helps to improve the accuracy of code completion. However, when modeling neural networks for ASTs, the sequencing operation of nodes leads to the loss of their hierarchical structure information. Meanwhile, traditional neural networks cannot predict many Out-of-Vocabulary (OoV) words in the terminal node values of AST. To alleviate the above problem, in this paper, we propose a Multiple-Path Learning neural network model for code completion (MPL) based on an AST by learning from a large-scale corpus. In this model, multiple paths such as context path, root path, and terminal node path are established to understand different code features required for node prediction and improve code representation ability. Based on the principle of program local repeatability, it also adopts a replication mechanism to copy the appropriate OoV words from the local terminal node path as the prediction result, further improving the prediction accuracy. The experimental results show that the MPL model has better performance than existing methods on the code completion task.

This article introduces a novel lightweight framework using ambient backscattering communications to counter eavesdroppers. In particular, our framework divides an original message into two parts. The first part, i.e., the active-transmit message, is transmitted by the transmitter using conventional RF signals. Simultaneously, the second part, i.e., the backscatter message, is transmitted by an ambient backscatter tag that backscatters upon the active signals emitted by the transmitter. Notably, the backscatter tag does not generate its own signal, making it difficult for an eavesdropper to detect the backscattered signals unless they have prior knowledge of the system. Here, we assume that without decoding/knowing the backscatter message, the eavesdropper is unable to decode the original message. Even in scenarios where the eavesdropper can capture both messages, reconstructing the original message is a complex task without understanding the intricacies of the message-splitting mechanism. A challenge in our proposed framework is to effectively decode the backscattered signals at the receiver, often accomplished using the maximum likelihood (MLK) approach. However, such a method may require a complex mathematical model together with perfect channel state information (CSI). To address this issue, we develop a novel deep meta-learning-based signal detector that can not only effectively decode the weak backscattered signals without requiring perfect CSI but also quickly adapt to a new wireless environment with very little knowledge. Simulation results show that our proposed learning approach, without requiring perfect CSI and complex mathematical model, can achieve a bit error ratio close to that of the MLK-based approach. They also clearly show the efficiency of the proposed approach in dealing with eavesdropping attacks and the lack of training data for deep learning models in practical scenarios. In the realm of data mining, outlier detection has emerged as a pivotal research focus, aimed at uncovering anomalies within datasets to extract meaningful and valuable insights. The objective is to leverage data mining methodologies to pinpoint anomalies within datasets, thereby revealing crucial and enlightening information. Herein, we introduce a groundbreaking outlier detection methodology, ODMGIS, that seamlessly integrates multi-granularity representation and information set concepts to devise the multi-granularity information set (MGIS) model. This model adeptly characterizes the distribution patterns of data points. Firstly, we employ entropy function and their complementary function as measurement tools to accurately quantify the inherent uncertainty in data with different distributions, and considers the sum of the two as a comprehensive representation of the overall uncertainty of the information source. Subsequently, an outlier score model is constructed based on MGIS, which can deeply characterize the degree of outlierness of samples, thereby effectively identifying abnormal points in the dataset. During validation, ODMGIS was rigorously tested on practical datasets from medicine and bioinformatics, and its performance was benchmarked against both traditional and the state-of-the-art algorithms, showcasing substantial benefits. This research not only contributes a fresh perspective to outlier detection but also sparks innovative avenues for exploring and advancing the granular computing theory. © 1993-2012 I IEEE. In size, revenue, and global impact, video game development (VGD) is a `tower' in the entertainment industry. Yet most studios struggle to succeed because of challenges in multidisciplinary team dynamics, the production process, and project management. The key reason(s) for why, however, remains not fully explained. This study investigated the critical reasons behind the multidisciplinary VGD team collaboration and leadership problems in the industry despite their reported adoption of agile/lean software engineering practices. A tertiary literature review was undertaken on the empirical academic and industry literature that described VGD studio context and success factors, practices, and challenges. 22 relevant texts were identified and summarised. A root-cause analysis revealed that VGD has five contributing factors to its challenges: its `wicked' nature of continually evolving complexity, the immaturity of its practices, the largely hidden knowledge of industry practice, the incoherent understanding within diverse teams, and the generally confused terminology among developers. The lack of a coherent/shared language among the industry's key stakeholders is a `Tower of Babel' problem because it makes it difficult to clearly understand, unify, and communicate the core concepts of VGD, or to improve studio practices.
