Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is challenging to diagnose due to its subtle and transient symptoms, making noninvasive diagnostic tools crucial for early detection. This study explores the use of a custom ResNet deep learning model combined with the Grad-CAM interpretability technique for mTBI detection via speech analysis. Speech data were transformed into Mel-spectrograms and fed into the model for binary classification between concussed and control individuals. The Grad-CAM method provided insights into which frequency regions of the Mel-spectrogram were most important for the model's predictions, with higher-frequency regions identified as significant for the model in detecting mTBI. Using Monte Carlo Cross-Validation (MCCV), we evaluated 50 different subject train-test split configurations to gain insights into the model's performance stability and variability. This analysis can assess the model's ability to learn consistent patterns within the dataset and suggest potential generalization tendencies. The variability observed in the performance metrics distribution underscores the importance of robust evaluation methods, particularly when working with small datasets. The combination of deep learning, robust evaluation technique and interpretability in this study contributes to the development of clinically viable, speech-based tools for mTBI detection, with potential applications in sports and healthcare settings.

Interactive medical image segmentation (IMIS) has shown significant potential in enhancing segmentation accuracy by integrating iterative feedback from medical professionals. However, the limited availability of enough 3D medical data restricts the generalization and robustness of most IMIS methods. The Segment Anything Model (SAM), though effective for 2D images, requires expensive semi-auto slice-by-slice annotations for 3D medical images. In this paper, we explore the zero-shot capabilities of SAM 2, the next-generation Meta SAM model trained on videos, for 3D medical image segmentation. By treating sequential 2D slices of 3D images as video frames, SAM 2 can fully automatically propagate annotations from a single frame to the entire 3D volume. We propose a practical pipeline for using SAM 2 in 3D medical image segmentation and present key findings highlighting its efficiency and potential for further optimization. Concretely, numerical experiments on the BraTS2020 and the medical segmentation decathlon datasets demonstrate that SAM 2 still has a gap with supervised methods but can narrow the gap in specific settings and organ types, significantly reducing the annotation burden on medical professionals. Test suite effectiveness metric evaluation: what do we know and what should we do?

Comparing test suite effectiveness metrics has always been a research hotspot. However, prior studies have different conclusions or even contradict each other for comparing different test suite effectiveness metrics. The problem we found most troubling to our community is that researchers tend to oversimplify the description of the ground truth they use. For example, a common expression is that "we studied the correlation between real faults and the metric to evaluate (MTE)". However, the meaning of "real faults" is not clear-cut. As a result, there is a need to scrutinize the meaning of "real faults". Without this, it will be half-knowledgeable with the conclusions. To tackle this challenge, we propose a framework ASSENT (evAluating teSt Suite EffectiveNess meTrics) to guide the follow-up research. In nature, ASSENT consists of three fundamental components: ground truth, benchmark test suites, and agreement indicator. First, materialize the ground truth for determining the real order in effectiveness among test suites. Second, generate a set of benchmark test suites and derive their ground truth order in effectiveness. Third, for the benchmark test suites, generate the MTE order in effectiveness by the metric to evaluate (MTE). Finally, calculate the agreement indicator between the two orders. Under ASSENT, we are able to compare the accuracy of different test suite effectiveness metrics. We apply ASSENT to evaluate representative test suite effectiveness metrics, including mutation score metrics and code coverage metrics. Our results show that, based on the real faults, mutation score and subsuming mutation score are the best metrics to quantify test suite effectiveness. —Accurate three-dimensional perception is a fundamental task in several computer vision applications. Recently, commercial RGB-depth (RGB-D) cameras have been widely adopted as single-view depth-sensing devices owing to their efficient depth-sensing abilities. However, the depth quality of most RGB-D sensors remains insufficient owing to the inherent noise from a single-view environment. Recently, several studies have focused on the single-view depth enhancement of RGBD cameras. Recent research has proposed deep-learning-based approaches that typically train networks using high-quality supervised depth datasets. The performance of current learning-based depth enhancement techniques is highly dependent on the quality of the ground-truth (GT) depth dataset;however, such high-quality GT datasets are difficult to obtain. In this study, we developed a novel method for high-quality GT depth generation based on an RGB-D stream dataset. First, we defined consecutive depth frames in a local spatial region as a local frame set. Then, the depth frames were aligned to a certain frame in the local frame set using an unsupervised point cloud registration scheme. The registration parameters were trained based on an overfit-training scheme, which was primarily used to construct a single GT depth image for each frame set. The final GT depth dataset was constructed using several local frame sets, and each local frame set was trained independently. The primary advantage of this study is that a high-quality GT depth dataset can be constructed under various scanning environments using only the RGB-D stream dataset, which can be used as a single-view depth supervision dataset. Moreover, our proposed method can be used as a new benchmark GT dataset for accurate performance evaluations. CompanyName2Vec: Company Entity Matching Based on Job Ads

Entity Matching is an essential part of all real-world systems that take in structured and unstructured data coming from different sources. Typically no common key is available for connecting records. Massive data cleaning and integration processes require completion before any data analytics, or further processing can be performed. Although record linkage is frequently regarded as a somewhat tedious but necessary step, it reveals valuable insights, supports data visualization, and guides further analytic approaches to the data. Here, we focus on organization entity matching. We introduce CompanyName2Vec, a novel algorithm to solve company entity matching (CEM) using a neural network model to learn company name semantics from a job ad corpus, without relying on any information on the matched company besides its name. Based on a real-world data, we show that CompanyName2Vec outperforms other evaluated methods and solves the CEM challenge with an average success rate of 89.3%. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Ethical Aspects of ChatGPT in software engineering Research

ChatGPT can improve software engineering (SE) research practices by offering efficient, accessible information analysis and synthesis based on natural language interactions. However, ChatGPT could bring ethical challenges, encompassing plagiarism, privacy, data security, and the risk of generating biased or potentially detrimental data. This research aims to fill the given gap by elaborating on the key elements: motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research. To achieve this objective, we conducted a literature survey, identified the mentioned elements, and presented their relationships by developing a taxonomy. Further, the identified literature-based elements (motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles) were empirically evaluated by conducting a comprehensive questionnaire-based survey involving SE researchers. Additionally, we employed Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) approach to analyze the relationships between the ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research and develop a level based decision model. We further conducted a Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) analysis to create a cluster-based decision model. These models aim to help SE researchers devise effective strategies for ethically integrating ChatGPT into SE research by following the identified principles through adopting the motivators and addressing the demotivators. The findings of this study will establish a benchmark for incorporating ChatGPT services in SE research with an emphasis on ethical considerations. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has become an ideal medium for long-term storage and retrieval due to its extremely high storage density and long-term stability. But access efficiency is an existing bottleneck in DNA storage, especially the lack of high-quality random access address sequences. Therefore, in this paper, we report a series of approaches based on k-weakly mutually uncorrelated (k-WMU) codes to design the address sequence to improve the access efficiency of DNA storage. To address the problem of DNA sequences that are poorly scalable at the base level, we propose a 0-m-ruling coding scheme combined with k-WMU codes that can make address sequences avoid generating secondary structure with stem lengths ranging from 3 to 9. Based on the decoupled structure, We further extend the k-WMU codes with error correction function while satisfying combinatorial biological constraints. In order to investigate the performance of the designed address sequences for real-world applications, we perform simulation experiments based on thermodynamic properties and error correction capability as well as compared the minimum free energy (MFE), melting temperature (TM), and average decoding success rate (ADSR) with previous work. The results show that designed address sequences have a high MFE value and ADSR and a substantial reduction in TM-variance while satisfying the combinatorial biological constraints. As the quality of address sequences improves, this will help to achieve accurate random access as well as enhance the robustness of the DNA storage system. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

RADAP: A Robust and Adaptive Defense Against Diverse Adversarial Patches on Face Recognition

Face recognition (FR) systems powered by deep learning have become widely used in various applications. However, they are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, especially those based on local adversarial patches that can be physically applied to real-world objects. In this paper, we propose RADAP, a robust and adaptive defense mechanism against diverse adversarial patches in both closed-set and open-set FR systems. RADAP employs innovative techniques, such as FCutout and F-patch, which use Fourier space sampling masks to improve the occlusion robustness of the FR model and the performance of the patch segmenter. Moreover, we introduce an edge-aware binary cross-entropy (EBCE) loss function to enhance the accuracy of patch detection. We also present the split and fill (SAF) strategy, which is designed to counter the vulnerability of the patch segmenter to complete white-box adaptive attacks. We conduct comprehensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of RADAP, which shows significant improvements in defense performance against various adversarial patches, while maintaining clean accuracy higher than that of the undefended Vanilla model. Not All Data Matters: An End-to-End Adaptive Dataset Pruning Framework for Enhancing Model Performance and Efficiency

While deep neural networks have demonstrated remarkable performance across various tasks, they typically require massive training data. Due to the presence of redundancies and biases in real-world datasets, not all data in the training dataset contributes to the model performance. To address this issue, dataset pruning techniques have been introduced to enhance model performance and efficiency by eliminating redundant training samples and reducing computational and memory overhead. However, previous works most rely on manually crafted scalar scores, limiting their practical performance and scalability across diverse deep networks and datasets. In this paper, we propose AdaPruner, an end-to-end Adaptive DAtaset PRUNing framEwoRk. AdaPruner can perform effective dataset pruning without the need for explicitly defined metrics. Our framework jointly prunes training data and fine-tunes models with task-specific optimization objectives. AdaPruner leverages (1) An adaptive dataset pruning (ADP) module, which iteratively prunes redundant samples to an expected pruning ratio;and (2) A pruning performance controller (PPC) module, which optimizes the model performance for accurate pruning. Therefore, AdaPruner exhibits high scalability and compatibility across various datasets and deep networks, yielding improved dataset distribution and enhanced model performance. AdaPruner can still significantly enhance model performance even after pruning up to 10-30% of the training data. Notably, these improvements are accompanied by substantial savings in memory and computation costs. Qualitative and quantitative experiments suggest that AdaPruner outperforms other state-of-the-art dataset pruning methods by a large margin. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
